How To Play Japanese Destroyer Shimakaze In World Of Warships

A long but hopefully informative and good video on Shimakaze. As a T10 DD, I think she is in a really good spot now with the recent turret traverse buff and torpedo detection buff. I always felt she was a strong ship and now I feel she is REALLY strong.
I fully understand that people struggle with Shimakaze and hopefully this video will shed some light on tips to maximize playing with her. At the end of it all, there are a few take aways:
1.) Her guns don't suck, none of the IJN DD guns past T6 have sucked
2.) She has 1.7km detection range on her 12km torpedoes... yes that's further than Gearing, yes Gearing has longer range, but Gearing has 10 torps to Shima's 15 and Shima has those 15 in three quintuple launchers which is significantly more useful than two quintuple launchers.
3.) Shima requires a higher skill level to play, but Akatsuki plays similar at T7 where things are cheaper, so use Akatsuki to practice for Shima!
Overall, This is my favorite T10 DD and second favorite DD overall in game. She is silly amounts of fun and when played to her fullest, 100% troll. Can't argue with that fun!

Good review. It's funny that some people hate playing the Shima. I'm not there yet but I will say it's the most feared high tier ship if I'm in a battleship or a even cruiser. Even if you can detect a 15 torpedo wall of skill, you will often times eat at least 1. I fear giving a broadside to a Shimakaze more than I do to a Yamato in my Grosser Kurfurst that's for sure!

This has been my argument since day one. If you eat a single torpedo it will do MASSIVE damage. If you eat more than one you might as well just be dead. It is entirely possible to launch torpedoes in such a way so that your target will eat at least one if not more. Catch a ship broadside and not paying attention and they are doomed.

I find it interesting that you showed a gameplay when confronted with a chapayev because i just finished that grind and i was running it at full concealement. Althought the radar is very good. To use it to full effect, i used the f3 key to try to get gunfire support because the chapayev alone is often not enough to deal with a destroyer before the radar run out.

Yup, and even with USN Radar, the key is to remain calm, WASD and run until no longer visible. That's assuming that you are in a situation like I was in where being detected would most likely result in your death! There are times when I don't even notice it get popped because I'm already shooting at ships in the open! ;)

They are a bit of a challenge to get right but I have a whole How to Play series for IJN DD's that you should seriously consider checking out if you are struggling with their game play! Keep in mind that they DO play differently from other DD's but when you figure out the game play, they are A LOT of fun to play!

I have been working through those videos starting with the T5's which I currently have. I have worked my way through to the Khabarosk on the Russian side so I will be very careful not to play IJN ones the same way. ;)

Actually the gun play on IJN DD's is very similar to RUDD's and is, in some ways, better. The torpedoes though... there is no comparison. IJN Torpedoes are ruthless. Generally speaking if the target isn't heavily defended, I'll put torps in the water and engage with guns while they are on the way. If I can get them to burn a damage control party consumable before the torps hit, even better because they are almost guaranteed to cause a flood which hurts a lot! Worst case, they burn to death! :P

In randoms, you should always be using F3 8km torps. Shimakaze can hold her own when knifefighting that close bit the point is to get torps that consistently land on target. Torping smoke with them also yields better results than the 12km

the IJN DDs are their own playstyle from Kagero and up. I find its playstyle fun, but there are drawbacks that most don't like.

Playing this thing, you almost feel Invincible. It's sort of like a really small, really fast cruiser. The 15 TTs are awesome, and the 5-inch guns do a lot of damage. The ship's biggest problem, in my opinion, is the ship's size: it's a tad big for a destroyer, but that's not a real issue.

Well in navel creed this is an hella stealth ship max rang 20 km ish butt with special skills the go longer butt slow down .. Butt has ro be one of my fav dds in games if played right if u stealth its a very dangers ship

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are getting at here! The 20km torpedoes are pretty hard to use, if not impossible. The 12km torps are by far the most versatile and easy to use option on the ship! :)

PM, LS, SI, CE, AFT, BFT, AR is my IJN DD build. Gun focused to help level out the mix of high and lows from relying so heavily on torpedoes for damage.

When saying the 20km rang is u can use more stealth an slinence .. Ive tried the . smaller rang torps butt the plans get me every time is why i like longer range an my torp hit is avge hit is 3 to 7 depending on which ship or battle.. Or which place im used to or stay stealth .. Yes the faster shorter torps may help some just not me

Camouflage on the ship with the concealment bonus, concealment module and concealment expert on the captain should get you 5.9!

I'm at Lexington on the USN line and I've sold all of them and IIRC repurposed the captain.... The gameplay is really difficult to get used to and the little things are not immediately obvious nor are the tactics able to be practiced at lower tiers any more! :(

The UI is lacking for an RTS and it's game-play is lacking for WOWS in my opinion. Shame because carriers have so much potential. What are your thoughts on Kaga coming out? I was hoping to see more changes to carriers before they become out with new premiums.

Yeah that's very true. I'm actually hyped for the Kaga but I hate how she has teir 6 planes. I know for sure against a Sipan she will be no use to the team. My personal experience in a Hiryu against a Sipan.

Shimakaze is my worst DD expérience in game. Long range torps are too slow, correct speed one are in radar zone meaning fast death. I have seen a GK evade a 15 torps spread at 6km just sliding through the gaps !! No serious gun like Gearing, I tried really strong to play this ship but it's all disapointment to me. Even Drunk i have better result with Gearing and more torp hits. Gameplay is a bit like Shinonome except you dont have perma radar in tier VI. Changes all. Get close is toodangerous, long range alleuilla doesnt pay.

The Type 93 Mod 3 torpedoes (12km) are the perfect torps for Shima for the average player. The F3 torps are a bit ridiculous to play at T10 because, as you've seen, radar, spotting planes and other DD's make it hard to effectively use them. Some people love them, I cannot stand them, but that's just me. Overall, Shima is a fantastic ship though and once you figure out the torpedoes and how to launch them to get hits, she just racks up damage so fast. If you are looking to practice with Shima but not actually play Shima, you should buy back Akatsuki as she plays almost identically to how Shima plays but at T7. Akatsuki is a fantastic ship for her tier!

German BB can avoid a full 15 torp at close range even with 76 km torps. Tier X ships are way too powerful for her and its unreliable torp spread. You only can rely on luck.

Only if Hydro is up or the spotting plane spots them. If not, then it's a guaranteed dev strike if launched at the right angles! Having done it multiple times, you get used to the play style necessary to do well in them! Hang in there, you'll get it!
