I also forgot to mention, i think it's interesting that you mention how the IJN shells were designed to attack the underwater section of ships with longer timed fuse for their shells. Because the ingame hood from what i heard went the opposite way from IJN with short fuse instead and from my experience, it's seem to be quite efficient against cruisers (i had a couple of dev strikes against cruisers) but i also seem to have a harder time reaching the citadel of other battleships with hood (thought it might be a placebo) but i still do quite a lot of damage against them. If you ever play hood, perhaps it could be something for you to investigate.

for me it's actually the worst tier 7. I can perfectly deal good amounts of damage with my Lyon, but the guns of the Nagato are just too unreliable.

gneisenau is the most entertaining one to play , it may only have 6 380mm guns but the secondary guns with those 2 triple torpedo launcher makes it very solid brawler , it's never going to be for everyone who prefer shooting people from afar but it's there with possibly the best AA and speed of the tier to make it feels more like a Tier 8 in some cases

So glad a fellow American tries to pronounce something how it should be in it's native language...since growing up I grew up leaning from a Japanese family in my neighborhood...it'd be pronounced (na-ga-toe/nah-gah-toe - depending on accent and which part of the US you'd be from). Nagato is a fine ship... Back a couple years ago i went for the US BB line, and i loved the Colorado, how that little ship was not fast, not very tanky, but had such an amazing broadside... Now i'm going for the IJN BB Line, and i just reached Nagato... Nagato feels pretty similar in terms of guns... the 16' can do quite some damage, they do not to bounce all the time like the crappy 14 inchers of Fuso and Kongo do. But i'm new at the ship so i don't have the upgraded hull yet... of course it its quite a paper ship on the first hull, but something tells me that even the Upgraded hull will be a little less tanky than Colorado. Anyway its still a nice ship

Good review. I'm about 1-2 good games in the Fuso away from getting the Nagato tho I may hold off until after ranked season (if I decide to use Fuso for ranked to avoid having to worry about getting a new captain, etc). Seems to have the Colorado's punch with more accuracy. Just not sure about AP secondaries... I can imagine a lot of bounces where I see fires.

Yeah unfortunately the secondaries firing AP means bounces are going to be common. Too common IMO. That said, if they pen, they do decent damage! This is unfortunately a trait of the IJN BB secondaries though as pretty much all of them have this problem! :(

I just got this ship - just got my third game in which was high caliber and a bunch of other things. I feel obligated to retratct my statement on AP after citadel hits on a cruiser who was trying to torp me and survived my 16k salvo on him when he came aroudn the corner at 7.5k. But really the guns are the amazing part. It's all about that accuracy.

Nagato's secondaries are bad news for cruisers and destroyers. It is not meant for battleships. I score most of my secondary expert award in my Nagato. Mostly due to cruisers and destroyers sailing too close or dares to challenge me at close range. My Nagato is secondary build btw. Countless times my secondaries saved me from DDs doing a suicide torp run.

I don't know how people like this ship more than Colorado. This video very well summed up it's strengths and weaknesses, and the armor is very weak. When I play my Nagato, if I show even a tiny amount of broadside I will take at least 10-15k damage regularly if not a citadel hit. In the Colorado, I can expose my broadside to open up the back turrets and be almost immune to most fire. The Colorado's superior AA, torpedo protection and maneuverability also make it a much more enjoyable ship, and while it may be less accurate, it certainly doesn't feel like it. Overall, the Nagato is a great ship with it's better flexibility due to higher top speed, but more punishing if even small mistakes are made, at least in my opinion.

For me, the Colorado's armor under performed... I had much better luck with New Mexico's and NC's... Nagato likewise performs better for me than the CO's did, and the guns seem more effective, though that could be due to me feeling more comfortable getting closer to the enemy with her than I did in the CO. Speed is also a factor... CO's one of those slow US standard BBs.

Zack Tyler I think the Colorado guns definitely do more damage and penetrate more, they also don't seem to be any less accurate despite the stats. Speed doesn't make a difference to me, it is easily offset by the amazing armor and excellent weaponry and maneuverability.

USN BBs (ESPECIALLY KM BBs) cater to those low-skill players that do not bother learning angling and kiting. The IJN BBs are the hard mode BBs.

The Nagato's guns are better at longer range - more accurate but up close the Colorado was pretty mean and it's heal was something else if I remember correctly!

Disagree with the assertion that USN BB's cater to people who refuse to learn angling... it's absolutely CRITICAL to play USN BB's well because of their armor scheme. I see so many players in US standards sailing around broadside and eating citadels from me it's not even funny. They are extremely tough nuts to crack when angled. Nagato has the same problem that all IJN BB's have... those upper casemates where the secondaries are in are armored enough to arm AP shells rather than allow for straight over penetrations. They are also angled in such a way that enemy ships are almost always guaranteed to get a normal pen from them instead of bounces. It is rare, but full on bounces are possible to have when in Nagato, they are just rare. I think the overall play style of the two ships is different enough to say that individual preferences will play a role. I REALLY like the US Standards from a gameplay standpoint but Nagato gives you just enough of an edge in a few critical areas (range, accuracy and speed) to be extremely good at being an "all around good" battleship.

Hey Mr Whiskey great commentary as always. Nagato is as far as I am concerned a first rate ship. One of the best T7 tech tree BB's out there. Large HP but don't let that fool you. She is slightly fragile. But those guns, oh yes, they really are this ship's trump card. If you capatalise on her strengths devastating strikes are all to easy. Love her to death and another one of my go to ships.

Keep trying! The accuracy is there you might just need to modify your aiming either longer or shorter to get more consistent accuracy. Remember this game's dispersion system tries to help you get hits when your aim isn't perfect!

There were no cruisers with Taffy 3 at Samar. That 'cruiser' was likely the destroyer USS Johnston, which only sank after taking, and giving, a ferocious pummeling.

I'm actually torn between a main battery/survivability build and the full secondary build. I generally play KM BBs, so i have plenty of brawlers and all of them are specced for secondaries. Cannot chose what to do with Nagato and IJN BBs in general! ç__ç

It's all in how you prefer to play them. I think a survivability build actually works well on IJN BB's without giving up too much but prefer a hybrid stealth/survivability build to a secondary build. These ships don't do that well in close quarters without copious support.

Can you do a video on how to position yourself and map awareness for battleships in general in tier 8, because lately I have been noticing I have been doing poorly in my tier 8 battleship North Carolina and in my tier 8 battleship bismarck, and up battles because I often get torpedoed by destroyers early in the battle sometimes or I get focused to hell. It really seems like you know what you have been talking about in terms of world of warships, and I would love some constructive info on how to avoid making really stupid decisions when it comes to positioning and being aware of the map and what your team is doing, thanks.

honestly the hope of yammy is the only thing keeping this turd in my port. at optimal range, my shells end up bracketing their target 10/10 times. the only other ship that had me this annoyed about accuracy was the german 7, but it at least hit someone every soo often.

It is faster and more armoured than the Fuso, but with a similar weight of shellfire/dmg, but as with any ships in WoWs; any ship above tier V should have a captain with a minimum of equal or greater number of skill points than the tier they are at, fulltsop, period. -i.e; Tier VI minimum is a 6 skill captain, so minimum of 8 for the Nagato.

What the hell is that at around 17:00? Yes the IJN did indeed use diving shells historically, but that has nothing to do with what's happening ingame. IJN battleships have the same standard fuse timing and fuse arming threshold as other battleships, US, German, French etc. So advising players to aim lower with Nagato than with other battleships is wrong, as the mechanic you described apply for all battleships. Some exceptions exist but the other way around, some BBs like Scharnhorst must aim higher (not lower) since their fuse rarely allow the shells to penetrate the citadel.

Again, speaking entirely from my experience, aiming at the water line in IJN BB's results in constant overpens whereas aiming ever so slightly into the water results in consistent citadel hits. That's my experience with the ships and that information is only as valuable to you as you make it. I know plenty of other people who have reported similar behavior in aiming. And yes, at the moment IJN BB's have the same .033s fuse time as other nations do, but this also used to not be the case... I know for a fact in CBT they had longer fuse times and have no idea when they were changed.

dunno if they nerfed the almighty hell out of this thing since this vid cam out but i dont see why you would keep it? the guns are by no means acurate, from my experiences this sigma is complete trash and comperable to say the bayern which couldnt hit the broad side of a barn from 2 feet away its made of paper with other ships of the same tier easily over matching your armour even at extreme angles on paper its more manueverable than the fuso but i havent really noticed it, so either power creep killed this thing or it got nerfed but overall i wana shoot myself in the face whenever i play it probably just gonna free xp my way past it

to make a great example ive shot a ship that was sitting still full broadside to me didnt move at all from 6k away with all my guns and only 2 shells landed and they were so far off target it may as well have just rammed the other person and this isnt just a couple volley's here and there thing its a every single freaking volly issue

Very US centric review. What about German or U.K.? What is the point of comparing this very good ship only to US battleships which were far from being the best at the time (I exclude cruisers and DDs which were very good)

I guess I'm confused as to what you are referencing in this. If there is any "US centric bias" in this video in which I only compare her to the US Standard she was a "contemporary" with (barely, might I add), it's because the Japanese built this ship specifically to compete against US Battleships. That is extremely clear in multiple references on Japanese battleship production. I also don't compare them to the German Battleship Gneisenau/Scharnhorst because in this game they are both on another level compared to Colorado or Nagato thanks to glorious power creep. I've been playing this game since Closed Beta Test so neither of those two ships were around when Colorado entered the game. I'd also disagree with the assessment that the US Standards were not good battleships. Quite the contrary actually. These ships were, for their time, revolutionary designs. The US introduced the All or Nothing armor scheme to the world with the launch of Nevada and completely upended naval design. They repeatedly showed how versatile the Standard Battleship design was and their combat performance is quite excellent. I actually have a really good video on the US Standard Design and why they were still fantastic battleships by the end of WWII in spite of their nearly 30 year age. I'd also argue that there is little that compared to the US Fast Battleships at their launchings either. They were the most modern battleships in the world at the time and implemented nearly 40 years of battleship building and naval design experience into them. They served a very specific role and did so very successfully throughout their careers.

Wow. I wasn't expecting such a long answer. Thanks for that. Maybe I have a bit of "European bias" but I still feel you haven't been fully objective in this review. I don't really want to enter into an expert debate but you say two things that contradict themselves a bit. You say that it wasn't US centric but continue to show how mighty and powerful US battleships were in your answer. The "all or nothing" concept actually started with HMS battleships such as the Dreadnought followed by German battleships turtle back armor, way before WW2 with the Bayern, followed by the Warspite. One thing I agree with is the fact that Japanese battleship design was meant to counter US battleships and their power could never really be tested when aircraft carriers started to overpower them. Just sayin... I would just would have like to see real (theoretical) battles between the mighty German battleships vs contemporary US ships. I am not so sure the outcome would be that clear on a 1 to 1 basis...

The Dreadnought, Bayern and Warspite did NOT utilize the All or Nothing armor scheme, they utilized what is called an "Incremental armor scheme". The best you can claim is that the HMS Inflexible had it back in 1876 but that stopped being the trend by the time the WWI ships came about. The US developed the format and employed it on all of their ships which drastically improved ship survivability over an incremental design. It wasn't until after WWI that other navies began utilizing it. There is no contradiction there at all. This review was made using information provided by Wikipedia and the sources used to create that webpage. It was done comparing it to the ship it was designed to counter, the Colorado. That's not a US centric view that's just a fact. I DO disagree with your assessment of US Battleships and could go AT LENGTH as to the reasons why I think each class of ships is comparable to their German, UK, and Italian navy counterparts. By the time WWII came around there is ZERO comparison between them. The US Fast Battleships were orders of magnitude better armed, armored, and built than their contemporaries. The heavy reliance upon radar for FCS, the extensive use of armor steels in the structures of the ships, and advanced naval designs made them extremely capable ships. Lets also not forget the fact that every single 16" gunned Battleship in the USN except the Colorado's launched with Mark 8 2700lb AP shells on board. These shells would rip apart anything Germany or the UK had at the time just like it did the French (RIP Jean Bart) and Japanese.

Right... I didn't want to enter a technical debate and I won't (my point wasn't a technical one but more in reference to the type of comparisons you were making). I now understand your perspective but probably won't be watching your videos in the future anyhow as I can read Wikipedia myself if I need to... I was referring to the game itself, not the real history facts, where it is useful to know how each ship of the same class and level compares to one another. Thanks for your patience. My apologies as it was not clear as to what exactly you were talking about. I'm a technical person by nature (hence why the history portion includes things such as the type of boilers used to create steam and what fuels them) and it wasn't clear what you were referencing. I guess I'm still a touch confused as I didn't really spend any time promoting Colorado over this ship. Now, my Amagi video I definitely did. I have a whole how to play series for the USN and German BB lines that cover how those ships play and I will always compare them to the USN line because the USN line strikes a pretty solid balance between the two play styles.

if your smart you'll never get close to the enemy in a Japanese battleship or battle cruiser. fuso being the exception.

Depends on the situation! Sometimes you can really push with them and get close to where secondaries can come into play. Other times it's all you can do to get close enough to ships to get accurate fire!

I tend to get better performance at closer ranges. I'm not saying 7k and in, I'm saying 10-15k tops. You land more hits and thus have a higher chance of getting more citadels in a salvo plus more normal penetrations. The only time this doesn't happen is if you are shooting at a cruiser with paper thin armor (looks awkwardly at the RNCL's) in which you get a lot of overpens rather than citadels. That, I suspect, is more a problem with the really long shell fuse time on IJN BB's than it is because of the higher penetration numbers due to being closer in.

well I typically stay 15-20km away and stay completely out of range of the enemy return fire. I can hit them they cant hit me. and if your good with your aim(lots of practice) you can hit every salvo with at least 2 shells. my first ranked battle I stayed at 18-19 km range and got 21 hits and 4 citidels. 80k damage. took the entire flank on my own. sorry if they can't hit you the advantage instantly goes in your hands

As someone who enjoys and delves into various foreign languages, this irks me. It's NOT at all difficult to simply pronounce such an easy-ass word correctly, but you just go "eh, murica".
