Well done. I would also recommend the Ted Reed Syncopation book. Playing the written rhythms on the snare, bass, hat and any combination of them while playing time is a long-term study. There are endless variations to try.

Hey Terry! These exercises are totally influenced by the Ted Reed Syncopation book. I tried to teach those concepts in this video without stealing straight from the book 😄

@@thebetterdrummer Yeah, absolutely. I’ve got a triplet grid exercise I’ve developed, too. All three limbs against the jazz ride pattern in every combination of all three parts of the triplet. It’s quite a workout.

Wonderful Jazz instruction series you have; love your teaching style and straightforward, right-to-the-point exercises. Little hiccup for me was that my counting started to swing a little which started affecting hit timing! I have to be mindful to keep it militantly straight time. And it's pretty cool to be developing some independence and to be able to sense, manage and keep the straight time and swing time elements separated, sort of from outside yourself! Really, really helpful and spot-on instruction. Wish I lived in in-person lesson distance.

I wish that content creators would label the skill levels of the lessons they post. It helps me to navigate all of the different lessons when I know which ones aren't so much for me. Excellent video, btw.

@@thebetterdrummer making solid progress now! Half of the battle was how to interpret the notation. This was excellent precursor practice. Be great if you did a follow up for adding in the triplet ideas

I find comping much easier using trad grip. Funny how many call themselves drummers but cant even do these simple comps or hold the simple swing ostinato on the ride!?
