Great recommendations, but I'll add one more astounding recording is Slide Hampton's amazing performance of this tune on his album Mellow-dy

Hello from Australia. I'm the MD of a community band and I have been saying very similar concepts to my better players although I think you've said it much better. Basically I've suggested that they stop thinking of themselves as horn players but as singers but instead of vocal chords they have their horns. A couple of my players got it straight away and the difference in their interpretation was dramatic. I'm going to suggest to my band that they all have a listen to this video because I believe it applies to reeds and woodwinds as well. Great video.

Brass playing is very similar to singing 😁

What a great job you do! For trombonists first and foremost, of course, but as a jazz lover who writes music as a hobbyist in almost any genre *except* jazz - because my technique (and probably talent) will never be up to snuff, honestly, even though I did show some early promise as a tuba player :) - I'm really glad I came across your channel. Picking up lots of great advice, knowledge and reminders on music theory, style, musicality, purpose and presentation. I'm truly impressed with the time and effort you put into these videos, and that you are willing to share your talent and knowledge with the world, for free no less - thanks so much!

Great video, some really helpful advice in here. One more version I'd recommend is off of "Big City Sounds" by Art Farmer/Benny Golson's The Jazztet. A bit of a lesser known trombonist named Tom McIntosh plays beautifully on it and really highlights what you mentioned about leaving the audience wanting more. Just a full band intro, trombone melody, half chorus trombone solo, then half chorus melody out.

I'm not hip to that recording. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

@@ShawnBellMusic It's great! I hadn't heard of the album or McIntosh until about a week ago. Could have sworn it was Curtis Fuller until I went and looked up the liner notes.

Do you have or know anything that can teach how to play traditional jazz trombone? I have searched but never found anything.

I know you are asking Shawn Bell, but there is a “Bugs” Bower method that might fit what you want, other than that I would say transcribe Jack Teagarden, Sam Nanton, Lawrence Brown , and Kid Orey.

@@danparker8254 thanks. I have some transcriptions but I lack the necessay know how or theory to be able to play without copying exact stuff.

It’s ok to start by copying your heros. Everyone has to start somewhere.
