I'm a bassist from the Beatles, Stones, Who, Cream era. So to say that Metallica is a bit out of my genre would be correct. I did like Black Sabbath and some other early "roots of heavy metal" bands, but my musical roots are of my generation. However, as a bass player, I absolutely love the instrument and admire fine players of any genre. Cliff Burton was a monster bassist. In the tradition of a Geezer Butler. He had a major influence on his generation of bassists/fans. It's horrible how the man died. A real tragedy and heartbreaking situation to say the least. However, in his all too brief lifetime, he inspired so many young people to pick up a bass, and his music as well as his influence will live on forever in the music he made. So R.I.P. Cliff, you left behind quite a legacy.
@silencedones4421 Жыл бұрын
I think Cliff was murdered and the buss story was the cover up. Way to many details to sell the story. I don't think Cliff wanted to take the band in the direction that James was trying to take the band and to kick Cliff out would of been band suicide. Another note Metallica is the Beatles of a different generation.

His harmonization technique was far more complicated than a 6th or 3rd below the original riff. If it was that simple, James would know how to do it himself and Cliff wouldn't have to teach him

That's probably because besides classical harmony, Cliff used counterpoint to harmonize melodies! Counterpoint is usually taught in music schools, so it makes sense Cliff had studied it. He was very influenced by J.S. Bach anyways, who invented counterpoint.

Cliff was one of three men who "taught" me to play bass. From 14 to about 18 years old I played along with Metallica, Sabbath, and Maiden albums every spare moment. Most "how to play like" vids are pretty far off the mark. This one is decent and even captured a trick (the slide up before root) I emulate unconsciously. I do that all the time and never realized I got it from Cliff.

Contrary (or complementary) opinion, Burtons lines are generally muddy and messy, lacking articulation and difficult to understand under tense guitars. This creates a rumbling bass cloud in background effect. That may be stylistic choice but sounds like hiding inconsistencies in playing.

I may get roasted for this but I was never a fan of his tone when heard isolated. Maybe because of how low in the mix he was, I couldn’t hear what it did for the songs. Obviously, I love his playing and contributions to music in general, however, I often wonder how his tone may (or may not) have evolved as technology in music had evolved.

For popularity and name recognition in the metal genre there are two bassists I would put above Cliff. Lemmy and Gene Simmons. However, I think Cliff will give them both a run for their money in terms of longevity. I could also throw in Les Claypool but he's just doing his thing and I consider his style less metal and more of a funk rock/alternative country/Vaudevillian born in the wrong era type of genre.
