he didn't say "blown" speaker. He said "ripped cone" those are 2 different things entirely. Take a spare speaker that works perfectly. Tear the paper cone. Play. This is what many players had back then. The 4-12 would have 1 or 2 of the paper cones torn so they flap. If that is a picture of his Marsh 4-12 it only has 3 speakers, top left is removed, bottom left torn and top right and bottom right stock- no tears. So you are hearing 3 of 4 and 1 is torn. The magnet and coils etc. work fine. Try this on an old rig and you will Mr Magic no pedal distortion! Any "who cares" amp will do, guitar, bass... tear the cone then make it sound how YOU like your bass through the $30 pile of garbage and you will find something that will make you happy for the rest of your life. Mic it, record it and listen back. Then look at that shit guit amp with the hole as a secret weapon set to destroy all who hear! lol Guys will use a pignose and tear the cone and a bass for super weird $40 amp distortion! lol It is about "what we had" back then. Broken stuff was perfectly fine if it made a sound we liked. Broken gear for a sound is hard to steal and copy! lol Later he played out of a 15 for the less treble sound at one point. 15's are beastly. The punk go to was the Ampeg FRIDGE so some of those had torn cones playing on albums and shows too. Les Paul was copied. He wanted "Pure" so PURE was the way until the late 60's when Pure was BORING so broken gear, like on Helter Skelter was suddenly OK. Snobs, classical, jazz and sweet music bands want pure sound, no distortion. Before torn cones , which was the only trick for badassery like Link Wray etc. ZERO albums eve made had distortion. It was considered bad work like a boat that won't float. Anyone who wants to have old school fun just take an old amp, tear the cone paper or plastic, cut i poke holes... whatever.. then mess with the knobs until you are laughing your head off a the sounds you just found. It cots the price of a meal for 2 to mess around. It creates song ideas. Cheers!

I met Stephen Perkins in 2015. We chatted a bit. He told me Eric A. threw a temper tantrum and stormed out of the studio before recording OF COURSE song and did not play on the album on that song. Instead, Stephen told me their Manager stepped in and it is him you hear.

A good bass delay does not. I Recommend Flattley bass delay, is what I use live.
