Great video. I always thought that Mike Mills was REM's secret weapon. Not just his melodic and inventive playing, also the backing vocals raised REM to a higher level.

Wish he did more backing vocals than he did. All the songs he was signing on he was great

Yes! Often when he was singing backups, there'd be two counter melodies. One being the bass line, and the second being the backup vocal line.

Yes yes yes! His voice is so ethereal.

Very underrated bassist and one of my all time favorites. He also sang harmonies and played most of the keyboard instruments on their records

Fables Of The Reconstruction is one of my favorite albums without question. Recently I've grown to enjoy the Chronic Town E.P. as well. Wolves, Lower sounds so different from anything else in 1982. And I'm surprised there isn't a Mike Mill's signature P-Bass on the market.

The bass line of Carnival of Sorts is killer. Really fun to play. No idea how he sings while playing though. Makes it look so easy.

Thank you. My wait was worth it! Mike has to be one of my favourite bassists. These lines are really well thought. Also one thing to add to this video, is hes ability to provide backup vocals. Terrific singer in my book, plus he can do leads. Texarkana and Dont Go Back To Rockville (live) were sung by Mike

Superman from Life's Rich Pageant and Near Wild Heaven from Our Of Time also feature Mike on vocals.

I think Mills regularly played a Rickenbacker 4001 before "succumbing to the temptations" of the ever-reliable Fender Precision.

Great appreciation of Mills' work. Bass players rule thru subtleties... affecting the tunes.

Another fantastic episode Paul. Mike Mills is such a melodic player and key part to REM's sound. In many ways, his and Peter Buck's roles are the opposite of U2's The Edge and Adam Clayton. Both great bands and big influences. And such an eclectic mix of songs chosen to demonstrate his style. Thanks. I know this is a long shot, but I would love to see a Bass Habits on Michael Been of The Call. His fretless bass playing was quite unique and was a huge influence on me as well. And it will give you a chance to break out that fretless Yamaha and show off your fretless skills. 😄 Please and thank you.

I’m kinda scared, whenever I’m obsessed with a bassist from a band, you make a video about it, I started getting obsessed with REM like two weeks ago

I’ve always enjoyed the melodic and rhythm quality off Mills bass lines, but I really appreciate your analysis of of how he works within the strengths of the other members of the group. Thanks for doing REM. One of my favorite groups. Keep up your outstanding work. It has helped appreciate so many more aspects of music.

I'll forever be thankful for this series, it teaches so much and opens my ears to things I never noticed before! While not as well known as his contemporaries I'd love to see you do an episode on Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio, The Falcon, Tuesday and Slapstick. He's an extremely underrated bass player and overall musician! Thanks you so very much for this Paul, keep on rocking! 🤘

These guys were the model for indie music. In my younger days we tried to copy the big US rock bands. Wasted our time and money. Look what R.E.M did with so little and plenty of space and clarity.
