Sting was heavily armed when he played in The Police. He played bass, foot synths, sang and used a tape echo for his vocals in certain portions of songs to add another layer. And to throw in the kitchen sink, he favored fretless basses.

Sting played a fretless Precision bass with a pick. I can't think of anyone else who ever did this, at least not regularly.

I've seen him live, solo and with Police. He does occasionally change the basslines to be able to sing while keeping context. Some of the "album" bass line segments are virtually impossible to be done "live" while singing. Nonetheless the guy's brilliant. The band's brilliant. Their less is more approach was a masterstroke.

I also have seen Sting with Copeland & Summers, also the Marsalis & Hakim driven solo Sting, both in Sydney (Showground March 1984 tickets cost f*$&ing $25! what a steal! with The Sunnyboys & Brian Adams supporting - phenomenal 1st concert & still one of the very very best I've seen & I've seen PLENTY. Sting solo Blue Turtles bash was Entertainment Centre 1986 & cost $30 with Yothu Yindi & Warumpi Band too, saw the Oils Angels U2 & BB.King there too just to name a handful.) I'm a seasoned guitarcheologist guitarasaurus. As for The Police vs. Sting solo; one can attest truly the former marginally shaded the latter for sheer mindsblown proper style entertainment of the 1st order; whist both being utterly unforgettable unrepeatable unimitable performances of enormous musicality & artistic quality with few peers equals or betters in my long struggle being mentally-guitarded. I began my guitarsenal aged 9, thanks to Malcolm Young bless his rhythm powerchords RIP 1953-2017 my hero, I was 14yrs old & begged to be allowed to go to see another fave The Police, been keen since Regatta de Blanc was on repeat-rinse & repeat cycle on AM/FM radio in '79 since music was a huge part of my life since boyhood & still is... I grovelled I washed-cars mowed-lawns scraped up the 25-clams pronto cos I could GO! U beauty mum 'n dad! On one condition;(with hirsute-knuckled pugilistic 3yrs elder neanderthal mate in tow & our pimply pancaked makeupped girlfriends within screaming distance at all times or else! it was safer than houses anyhow back then. we camped between the control tower in the centre of the grass-showground field proper 20metres from the centre of stage being among the earliest arrivals & stood awestruck astonished & amazed all night long; deafening were the amps cranked to 12!) Two conditions; & we were to come home directly home do not pass go do not collect $200 a strict order. Teen high schoolers need ruelz. But we were seeing The Police, I was 14, we were too cool for school that's 4 sure & keen music elective students all 4 & all & sundry had a total blast! they rocked HARD!. Both events were astonishing in every way. You just had to be there - like they say well like we lucky old bastards were mate, 35,000-rabid Aussies packed the Showground that warm March eve - glorious. Peace respect & far far too much rock n' roll is grossly insufficient, woefully inadequate, and nowhere near enough. Didyabringyabongalong Station, Central QLD Australia.

Saw them in 2008, MCG Australia Day, brilliant again. I saw Sting Blue Turtles tour 86 in Melbourne and 88, 94, 96 and the Synp and lute concerts. Great concerts and memories. Cheers

@@craigcotter7476 Eddie would make Mikey dumb down his playing so it would be easier to play to. Kinda understandable that a guitarist who barreled away like a mad freight train would worry about derailing if the track wasn't super smooth and straight, but unfortunately this led to Michael's skill being greatly underrated.

Hey man, just found your videos,, ..very cool.. Just a little comment from me.. I'm primarily a singer, and I started very early on, by singing and playing bass,back in the 80's. However I was very stubborn ,and despite a hand dissablity, I always insisted on playing guitar.. However , 40 years later, so now 6 months, I'm back on the bass and singing. Even at 55 yrs old, every time I pick up the bass I find something new, and this actually makes me a better singer. One of your videos on "Immergant song" (Led Zeppelin) chorus, with the mixolydian scale has helped me so much,because I couldn't find it myself.. I've been at it all night, and with time I'm going to nail playing it and sing at the same time.. thanks man! keep up the great work

Spot on review. I've been into bass for 25 years. Sting is my favorite bass player. While not the best in technical skills, his syncopated, minimalist bass lines were incredibly dynamic within the context of the song. For instance, I cannot think of a cooler bass line than Spirits in the material world. And yeah, trying to sing while playing some of his bass lines were no walk in the park.

Sting is not into bass gymnastics/showing off his technical prowess. He has repeatedly said that everyone in the band, including himself, is there to serve the song. Fancy and technical is not necessarily better. I remember reading an interview where another bass player/interviewer brought up the subject of a five-string bass. Sting sharply and disdainfully replied (paraphrasing), “What’s the extra string for?”

Music is the whole, not the part.....

The "Off the beat" element is a thing called syncopation, playing on the off beats
@M2Mil7er
@M2Mil7er 3 жыл бұрын
03:25 - it says SYNCOPATION in massive letters across the screen. He knows what syncopation is. Did you know that 'beat' is another term for drum part? So playing off the beat is like saying playing off the drum part (instead of following it). Example: the drums could be syncopated, but you're playing off the beat, meaning your bass part is actually not syncopated, but it's still correct to say 'off the beat'. Playing "offbeat" _is_ syncopation, and it's one word. An important distinction. 👍
