Dave, your videos have been immensely helpful to me. I have a friend who has told me forever that I needed to simply play along with my favorite songs in order to learn them. I recently picked up playing guitar in retirement, after having learned to strum a bit back in the 70s. Of course when I was trying to learn the basic pentatonic positions, it was impossible to do as my friend advised. But after a while I did get them under my fingers, however unmusically. Then... after learning some basic licks, I discovered Peter Green (at my advanced age of 64! How did it take me so long??). now I find myself channeling him as I play along, in exactly the manner Dave describes at the end of this video. Peter does a lick and I try to match it. It helps that the Peter Green style is perfect for this method: long gaps are punctuated by mostly distinguishable licks. And I fake it for the longer/quicker/quieter licks, making sure to hit the correct beginning, color, and end notes, but faking the rest. It is like magic! Now I am able recognizably to play Love That Burns, Have You Ever Loved a Woman, Worried Dream, and Gary Moore’s tribute to PG’s “Need Your Love so Bad.” The task now is to develop the emotion in those licks, and it is coming along. It would help if I could get together with the friends I played with in 2019 (bassist and drummer) to practice together, but for now, I will play along to the original tracks, or make some on my looper. Thanks Dave! I never thought quarantine would be so productive...

I agree with "the feel being very special". It can't really be taught other than by listening to Peter directly and imitating it first-hand. Excellent point out as to the dynamics, I think that can be a very easy thing to miss.

I do enjoy your note by note teaching. I KNOW it’s a pain as I once taught piano. And was a student. There is no instrument that I couldn’t play expect guitar and I’ve struggled with it for 55 years. Now as I reach this tone of my life for the past 5-6 years I’m determined to learn and you have been a huge help. My thanks

You’re doing your teaching style a disservice in this video. Dude, I was improvising along with what you were playing half the time to these videos and I normally suck at that. Thanks for making such great videos and giving guitarists the tools they need to improvise properly.

'Love That Burns' has always reminded me of blues meets klezmer music (the traditional music of Ashkenazic Jews in Eastern Europe), and the horns are a key to that. I suspect he would have heard that music from parents and relatives...

V. Interesting. It always reminded me of New Orleans funeral music...... The type where the brass band marches in front of the funeral courtage. So much of this kind of music is literally rich in cross-cultural influences..... Best, Pete.

my first youtube comment. I normally hate guitar tutorials but I had to comment here. I love that you love Peter Green. And you concentrate on the important: the feel. Like you say, Peter was/is a very special player. And the theory might only be half of it. Good stuff, wish you had more viewers. p.s. You are right, note for note is overrated.

i have been waiting so long for this thank you kind sir! to quote my "instant peter green"by douglas j noble, this slow minor keyblues was written by p.g.and clifford adams, the a blues scale is used throughout with the noteable exception a C#note in bar three of the intro. the phrasing in the intro is very free occasionally leaving the underlying pulse altogether. This type of phrasing, coupled with peters sensitive use of dynamics makes this song nearly impossible to transcribe.this must be studied along with the recording -bar 8 the scraping sounds at beginning of the bar were probably produced by pick scraping bass string the main body of the solo ends at the beginning of bar 11 and is followed by some virtually inaudible and very free playing from peter before piano solo

Awesome. Thanks! I'll look forward to it. Driftin' seems like a simple song, but some of those licks are extremely fast and furious, so it's tough to figure out. Great dynamics of tone. Might need a "note-for-note" breakdown on some of those tough licks! : ) Thx again.

It also has open coils. I have some extra humbucker covers lying about and am considering putting them on solely because I prefer the look. As far as the covers making a tonal difference debate goes-what's you're opinion? Thanks.
