@6:41. Chad says you can treat a iii7 as a I Maj7. He doesn't really say it (well, he does, by labeling the notes in terms of Bb) but it's a substitution and the reason is the notes of a iii7 are essentially the upper extensions of a I Maj7, which you'll see if you stack 3rds. 3579 of a Bb Maj 7 are the same as 1357 of a Dm7. Just thought I'd put that out, in case someone could use it. 😁

I know this might be far off brand, but often for gigs I've heard there are 4 things to do: Show up on time, be prepared, be a good hang and wear good threads. I think even a small segment on the 4th, such as what clothes are appropriate in which settings, such as casuals, artist, big band, etc., perhaps as a tag team with someone like Alexa Tarantino, would be very interesting.

I enjoyed the video and I understood the concept well although I didn't understand every little thing. I just started playing piano and I dont know where to start from, I really like jazz and the idea of the extremely creative process of improvisation but a small problem is that I come from playing the cello which is mostly used to play in classical music and my only experience in jazz is that I also play the bass. Can you give me some tips or help me in some way?

All music is based on ‘intervals’ and rhythm. These are 4 note phrases that obviously include intervals. These phrases are then layered over changes. So why is this ‘intervalic’ improvisation? Can someone explain?

6:50...Amaj7 over G7 "same intervallic shape" throws me off...the Bbmaj7 and Bmaj7 have the "same intervallic shape" but that Amaj7 over G7 "shape" is a bit of a stretch for me...need a bit more explanation please.

The extensions you can use over a dominant chord is b9 (half step above root), 9 (whole step above root), #9 (minor 3rd above root), #11 (Tritone above root, regular 11 doesn't work because it's a 4th above root which clashes with the 3rd because it's a half step above it), and 13 or 6th above root. A major 7 over G7 starts on A, the 9th of G7, C#, the #11 of G7, E, the 13th of G7, and G#/Ab, the b9 of G7

Hi Chadm your lessons are one of my favourites(I play guitar but last ten years I am studying seriously piano, with a very good teacher)Generic modality cOMPRESSION IS MAYBE INTERESTING TOPIC I t makes use of a compressed Root and the remaining triads mostly sus4 or at least one of them the other in some cases also...are two triads that have a lot incommen with melodic cells I think...I am studying that on giant steps but of course I would love to see you using it and then again learn some new stuff about how you would approach that of course the remaining 6 notes are free what triads you chose...

This is a rhetorical comment. I’m impressed by Chad’s skill, but some of this stuff is obviously over my head. I played swing jazz in high school and into college. We learned the song by listening to others and otherwise played by ear. Ten years ago I started playing again afte a 35 years break. I was fortunate to be able to play with some very good musicians. I have had to read some of the music to have the basics on order. However, when I’m having a solo, I “hear” what I want to play. My challenge is to be technically good enough to get it through my saxophone which I’m working on. So what is the goal of this video? Learning several licks to use in a solo? Then there is no longer improvising, you have learned a new song.

The etudes are just an exaggerated practice example. The core idea is just to think more about phrases and intervals while soloing.
