How to Play PS4 Games From External Drive On PS5

So essentially, PS4 games can be played directly from an external USB drive (disc based games, you will still need the disc in the drive tho) You cannot play PS5 games directly from a USB external drive (even if it's a SSD) and you will need to install an internal M2 card to increase the PS5 storage if running out of room for your PS5 games.

so basically the same thing Xbox has with their Xbox One games and Xbox One Enhanced for Series S/X games then, good to know. I am still pissed off with the guy at my local Harvey Norman though because he made me buy an inferior product for the same price i could of gotten double the storage 😠.

yes. you can store ps5 games on an external but can’t play them. when you want to play them copy them to the internal ps5 drive. it’s quicker to copy them than download them again

So if I’m understanding this correctly: you can “copy” the ps4 games to a hdd to play them, but you must use a disc to access that data (assuming you’re talking about disc transfers). The main advantage I see for this method would be an almost empty ps5 so one could install more ps5 games. Is my thinking right here?

You can store ps5 games onto the external harddrive but to play ps5 games you have to move it to internal hard drive

How has it gone for you? Did it look like the game grew in size? I got games on my hard drive doing this now. It also says the internal storage needs at least 900 some GB free. I'll see about updating when its done.

@@fddodgers11 everything's better I guess, I'm not sure what I did but it's not doing that anymore. What sucks is I have PS4 & PS5 in my two hard dives. And you have to download the games to the console from the hard drive to play them, so it's endless game of shuffling and forth, and I hate that there's 2 or more USB ports (haven't tried hiking my externals thru the front ports where you plug the controllers in yet) but you can only have one drive plugged in at a time.

if its a ps4 game you can play it from the external drive with all the updates. for example last of us part 2 got a 60 fps ps5 update and you can play it from the hard drive

You can play any PS4 game you want from the HDD as long as it doesn't have the PS5 logo next to it. Even after a game is updated with 60 FPS like God of War you can still play it from your external HDD.

I don’t know if you still answer comments on old videos but I’m gonna ask anyways. If I play my PS4 games from my 4tb HDD WD external hard drive that’s connected to my PS5. Would that game that’s suppose to be PS5 upgraded suffer horrific slowdown because it’s not installed on the PS5 ssd internal drive? Like if I play god of war (2018) from my external HDD hard drive that’s connected to my PS5.

so ps4 games that get upgraded such as last of us part 2 still get the upgrades (they are still ps4 versions of the games, not ps5 versions) So Last of us part 2 still has the 60fps upgrade

you know, whenever we insert a ps4 game disc to ps4 it copies the data (installing basically) but what if we move that copied data to external HDD. So can we still play it on Ps5 ? I suppose we would still require a disc to play it ? if it's possible for you please do upload a demo. THANKS!

You need the disc if it isn't a digital game. The "copy" still needs verification from the disc as it doesn't "copy" the entire game, only portions of the game to reduce loading

How about upgrading a disc-based ps4 game to ps5 but it requires a disc in order to play it right! But if we move game data to an external hdd. can we play the game from an external hdd ?? obviously the disc is still required in ps5. Because it's a ps4 game and it can be played from an external HDD .. right??

Like maybe if any had uncapped frame rates but struggled to maintain solid 60 fps previously on ps4 pro version, or games relying on dynamic res hitting 4k more now that they running off ps5 in this situation….

It could be unsupported because the minimum requirment for an HDD is 250 GB and the max is 8TB, are you sure your HDD is not 250 GB or less?

yes, unfortunately unlike the Xbox u cant do anything else while the PlayStation does so though so u have to sit there and wait for them to move, suck when u are moving around large games that have allot of GB's.

It's only for digital games, you can play your digital PS4 games on your ps5 by just transferring them to your PS4 external hard drive and plug it in your ps5

Quick question mate...so if I put a ps4 game on my external SSD does the update of that game also go on that external SSD, as I would like to install all my ps4 games (24) on my Samsung 4TB SSD, I want to keep them fully updated and always ready to go just off the external harddive so my ps5 hardrive gets left untouched, is this how it works or do the ps4 game updates get stored on the PS5 hardrive ?
