I said, "First, setup an even game, and then UWATE removes the pieces." It may not be a correct English, but I meant "a non-handicapped game" by "an even game".

I read in the english instructions that came with a shogi set from Yellow mountain imports that it is legal to move your king into check. So, that means that a position where you can't make any move that doesn't leaves your king in check, can also be called a checkmate, whether or not the king is under fire, or even directly connected!

@kooler2004 I'm not talking about the English spelling, I'm talking about the Japanese word. 定石 written out in kana is じょうせき, which transliterates to jouseki. Just because someone decided to spell it joseki doesn't change the spelling in Japanese. :)

this was someway a really fun video for me ^^, my 1st shogi match was no handicap vs an npc, I lost :P. Tried again, lost, only in my 3rd try I was able to beat the npc, that was before I watched Hidetchi's lessons ^^'. Usually you can't attack the edges due to the opponent lances =/, still an awesome vid to teach strategies, arigatö Hidetchi-sensei.

@Gerstein1 Official Japan Shogi Association rules say that leaving the king in check is an illegal move, and doing so counts as a loss. However, if you are put in stalemate (which is very unlikely, your opponent would have to capture every one of your pieces), it is the same as being checkmated, since any move you make would be illegal.

Oh, yes. I could give a check! So P7f was a pretty good way to remove the threat. I don't know why I didn't notice it. (^^;) But this rule that allows "two pawns in a file" is very strange...

Right. After that, you take the Silver on 3c by the Gold. And the King is in a predicament.

No, I said that's a special rule variant. Listen to it again carefully.

As a Go player (2d at the moment), I'm sorry to say that this is indeed one term that had been transliterated incorrectly at first, and since then the word "joseki" became so well used in Go literature that new authors sometimes chose to stick with the small errors in favor of being more familiar to the public. O vs. OU is a common error prevalent in many Japanese to English translations, unfortunately. Sensei's library page: BessatsuIgoKurabu actually contains some more examples (unwittingly)

I know that this is a 7-year-old comment, but I thought that I should reply anyway just in case someone stumbles upon this comment thread. It's not an error. the ou combination is read as an elongated o sound, rather than an o-u diphthong. Some people put a bar over it, so that it's spelt as jōseki, because it more accurately reflects the pronunciation. However, that bar is often dropped in practice, so you don't see people writing Tōkyō, for example.

@grolich It can only be an error when you take some specific romanization system as a standard.

@kooler2004 They're different words. Igo joseki is 定石, and shogi joseki is 定跡. By the way, they're both transliterated as "jouseki."

To move the king onto a square that is under attack, or to leave the king in a check are illegal.

Yes. Literal translation of "Bou-Gin" is "Silver Pole".

hmm odd in go romanji for standard moves is spelled joseki, and I wonder does shogi's jouseki have a different definition. In Go joseki is standard moves that produce even local results for both players.

If Silver takes it, I'm guessing Rook to 2c and promotes, can't King escape to 3a?

at 7:15, can't the Silver just take the Bishop? If Gold takes the Silver then King can take the Gold

If the Silver takes it, the 2c square is unprotected, and it's all over.

@hirohiigo that is false every go material on earth that is written in english transliterates it joseki. I would spell it the way you spell it if it wasn't spelled joseki by every english speaking sdk and stronger go player on the earth including me. I'm sorry for the confusion but read some english go material some time you will see what I'm talking about.
