The best lesson I've learned in my life is to stop reading the comments on any tutorial video and actually start practicing with proper techniques with the right bpm. Don't let the losers in the comments section discourage you on doing what you are doing. Most of them are lazy, doesn't put in the right work and mostly complains all the time. You might laugh for a while reading those things but it will also hurt you emotionally and actually start believing that you can't also do it either when clearly all you need is practice. Go practice and you will achieve it. Even someone like me learnt the main riff in 2 weeks. Don't stop the work and you will get there.

@@jonmaclennan I found it is much easier for me to use my middle and ring finger on that stretch than my pinkie and ring... I have huge hands, but a relatively short pinkie. I can clearly sound the G the first way, but the second way is a bit of a crap shoot consistency wise. I can actually stretch a fret longer this way than the chord needs... you might see if that helps, as the grip seems a bit more natural.

People with smaller hands use your pointer and pinky to make that big stretch dont use your thumb you will find that transition is much easier

This is the one lesson out here which teaches how he exactly plays it. I know it's exactly how john plays it because my hands are too small to play it haha

That chord he’s explaining at 4:40 really doesn’t need to be played like that. Many people don’t have the anatomy for it no matter how they might try. It’s WAY easier to just put your first (index) finger on the 3rd fret of the low E and then fourth (pinky) finger on the 7th fret of the high e, then leave the rest open (besides the A of course but that is effortlessly muted with the first finger). It sounds pretty much the same. You don’t really need to hit a D note on the 7th fret of the G string. It really doesn’t add much cuz the D is already there ( an octave lower) in the open D Edit: I see now that the D note on the 7th fret of the G string can be seen as a crucial inner counterpoint, BUT you can also play it exactly the way John does except use the first finger as opposed to the thumb. I think that’s easier

i have short fingers but i can play that chord on a travel size guitar. but to do that a full size guitar with 25.5 inches scale length is impossible for me. john mayer is crazy to come up with that

Great lesson! In all of the live versions of this song, John plays 7 on the high E string and 6 on the G string (with the thumb on 3 fret low E). He doesn’t play 7 7 during the verse. Does the recorded version play different?

Great question. I would actually say that it takes a pretty advanced level to play this song. I've been playing for years professionally and the chord shapes John uses in the verse are very tough and not typical. John is an incredible player. With that said, be patient with your guitar playing, and keep chipping away at it everyday and over time it will come together.
