It’s the perfect instrument if you want regular clarinet and a bass clarinet. It’s right in the middle of those two and I love it.

No. They all have different idiosyncrasies and all play differently. That’s why there are books and lessons dedicated to teaching how E-flat, Alto, Bass and Contra-alto etc all play differently from B-flat and each other. The way they play/respond are all totally different. But I’m just a retired professional clarinetist so what do I know.

I'm quite surprised you had a video on the alto clarinet. I think alto clarinets are awesome. I've never seen anybody play one of these irl.

Alto clarinet was the first clarinet I learnt. One of the things I have found playing the alto compared to the smaller clarinets is you can away using a softer reed. When I play a B-flat soprano, I use a 2.5 reed but on my alto I have always gone with 2 or even 1.5 depending on the piece. Stiffer reeds actually muffle the harmonics which make the alto stand out. If you can find them Vandoren 1.5 blue box are beautiful reeds for the alto.
@michaelshelley12892 жыл бұрын
i found the opposite for myself.......I play on a 3 reed......use to play on smaller reeds but i was squeaking too much......since using the 3 i don't squeak anymore
@nervchemnitz2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelshelley1289 Did you start out playing on a soprano? Thay may be why you seem to need to use a 3. Soprano to alto players seem to need to use harder reeds while many of us who never played a soprano first and started out on alto or bass, started with 1.5 and 2 and stayed with them. Different embouchure between the smaller and bigger clarinets, so reed behaves differently. In the 1970s and 1980s, alto/bass/contrabass instructor Arthur Nix reccommended using 1.5 to 2 on altos, and not harder reeds like soprano players use. To this day, I literally cannot get a 3 or harder reed to make a sound and I've been playing 25~ years on the altos. I tried one once couple years ago when i tried a sropano clarinet for the first time, couldn't get it to play.

@@michaelshelley1289 Same here. I came over from oboe - our community band had two oboists - but we didn't need two oboes and me being the weaker of the two, I opted to switch to something else. We were really weak on low-end instruments, like one euphonium and one bass clarinet in a group of about 40-45. I came across a brand new alto clarinet that was for sale, thought "seems different, maybe I'll switch over to that". I ended up playing an assortment of bassoon and tuba parts (east to read bass clef on an E-flat instrument) on the alto, as most alto parts don't add anything - and yes, to this day the alto clarinet is my favourite in the clarinet family even thorugh I have since acquired a bass, a couple sopranos (which I use for Swiss polka stuff), and a C clarinet.

I have had an alto clarinet (Bundy?) for years - bought in a pawnbrokers for peanuts. Hated it. Then I bought a Vandoren mouthpiece that really brought it to life. It even takes alto sax reeds! Playing on a strap doesn't work - ergonomics rivalling C-Melody sax - so I fitted a peg with a home made extension to allow me to play seated or standing. I had trouble with the second register until I stopped using the register key above the G. The altissimo, using my bass clarinet fingerings, gives me at least a second altissimo E, which has the mice scurrying for cover. I can understand why the original owner junked it, but that mouthpiece, and experimenting with the register key made it a bargain buy.

They are all the same. However, some of the notes in the higher register may require different fingerings to be in tune. I hope this helps! :)

None of my altos have a peg, but they all have two connections for a neck strap. And new 2-hook straps have become almost impossible to find.
@joeg46Highlands5 ай бұрын
I run a short length of light chain between the two, which enables me to put the hook on the strap in the correct position. I fitted an extended peg, which works far better, even when standing.
