Please I beg of you whoever is reading this, do NOT put your bassoon together like this. I recommend you place the seat strap on the seat, leave it there, kneel down and place the boot joint on the GROUND. Don't rely on the seat strap to hold your bassoon up while you put it together. After the boot joint is on the ground, put in the WING joint in first. If you put the long joint in first, it could damage the bassoon when you put it together because the wing joint is such an awkward shape. The long joint can easily slide down the wing joints curved side without bending the wing joint. After that you can proceed to fit the bell on like usual.

I just grab the book joint and then stick the locked pieces on and lock it, then I stand up and phew stick the top on the top and stuff the seat strap into my pocket. And then I grab my music while holding the bassoon and then throw the seat strap down and then tada! It’s done! And my hands are fricking small so it is a struggle but it’s a really good instrument to play and I would recommend it! (Even thought the fingering is really hard)

Most bassoonists (myself, included), who stay with the instrument and become serious players, will learn to make their own reeds. This allows the bassoonist to customize his or her sound to fit whatever circumstance in which the bassoonist finds himself, be that orchestral, chamber ensemble, woodwind quintet, etc. Your teacher will take you through the process of making reeds, and, though it is often a frustrating experience, it pays dividends for your overall sound production and intonation, in the end. Store-bought reeds are okay, to start, but they're kind of rough and pretty expensive (between $18.00 and $22.00 US).

I’d say it depends a lot on what you look for in a reed, most of people prefer wrapped reeds, but those actually work too, but it’ll sound really differently.

On posture. His advice is good. WAY back in high school our excellent director explained it like this. "Sit straight and balanced. Vertical. Do not lean back into the chair back. Sit such that if you should DIE, you would remain in the same position." He made his point. That said, I preferred a neck strap. It's really not the best choice ergonomically, but some (like me) seem to have problems with seat straps not staying in position. Actually, seemed, not seem. I moved from the bassoon long ago to brass (French horn) and eventually fully to the dark side - trumpet.

"I strongly recommend that you thoroughly soak your reed... but not too much." Does anyone have any idea what that means? Well, I noticed that he put the reed in the water at 1:10 and then took out at 16:30. That's over 15 minutes in water. It's way too long!

@filliiiii78 ай бұрын

@trainliker10011 ай бұрын
Yes. It is VERY important that the double reed be secure. That way, from time to time, you will be able to swing the bassoon up into playing position and solidly hit your teeth with the reed. Of course, this usually destroys the reed. But don't worry too much about this. This seems to only happen once you get a reed performing perfectly to your liking which can be rare for many. There is an International Double Reed Society with lofty goals like "encourage the performance of double reed literature". Its real purpose, I suspect, is to provide forums for double reed players to commiserate with each other over what they have gotten themselves into. Just kidding! Maybe.

That’s a dangerous way of assembling a bassoon. If your seat strap slides or breaks, your bassoon will fall to the floor. Instead, place the boot joint directly on the floor. Once the bassoon is assembled, you can attach the seat strap to it.

QWERTY417 True, but then you have to deal with an extremely fragile piece of metal pipe and two pieces of wood slapped together that’ll make dynamics much harder. Additionally, you will never be in tune. God, I love the Bassoon (6th year playing)
