Or be a high level technical contributor with strong soft skills. You don’t have to work in the middle of a high school popularity contest in cultures that value the right things. Tactical and overly results driven cultures are over fixated on hyperbolic discounting tend to love this game. Higher functioning cultures that actually have some level of critical thought to how they execute, other than who is the most dominant personality on the call, value much more than self advocacy. Also idealizing company management is a dangerous. It’s naive to think of these folks as immoral or wrong, but you have to realize that leaders do not have all the answers. They operate at a higher level for a reason, and they don’t know everything. In fact, they are relying on you to tell them where things are honestly. Finding ways to meet dates” to impress is not doing anyone on either side any good. Leadership is not the same thing as management. Do not conflate the two. Don’t be a brown noser. Do reject hyperbolic discounting. If your company doesn’t value you for acting in its actual best interests instead of your own, find a new company.

This is playing the corporate game ethically. Playing the corporate game is about leveraging social and political power over people to force them to make decisions that are in your best interest. If you play well you advance to the top rapidly if you fail everyone is eager to stone you but you can always move to a new city and try again.

Excellent "textbook" discussion, while completely disconnected with harsh, savage and inhuman real "scenarios". In this age when being "pushy" is characterized as "leadership" I guess rest of the discussion is absolutely aimless. Gaslighting has become pretty much "industry standard" in corporate culture and genuine talent is considered as "serious threat" to line management. These so called games might be useful for those who are already high on the ladder and that too by the blessings of BBQ and dance parties, where all "promotion discussion" actually materialized. For ordinary, honest and transparent professional Corporate world is a daily mental torture that one has to tolerate in order to provide food for the family. I worked 16 years in 140 years old so called multinational company and the miseries and agony I have been through is unspeakable. Good luck with these idealist discussions though I hope it will earn lots of viewership that I am sure is the resultant objective.

I’m in software engineering QA with a lot of experience and the workload is already too much and the expectations are high due to my level of experience. It seems like a game to keep me from being able to play the game. I think what you’re saying works if you’re given a fair shake. Too many of us didn’t qualify due to that we weren’t raised with the social graces and understanding or aren’t any minority or just got unlucky where we started. You need to know when to give up or you’ll be used to help others achieve their goals. Please tell me how I could get promoted when minimum expectations are already very high. I realize this is complicated and I think you’re a manager type of person. People like myself though may see that leadership needs to target the majority of workers and so we need to know when we’re in that minority that doesn’t get cared about.
@annapatton4544
@annapatton4544 4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, "working horses" get used and abused in the working environment just because the leadership knows these people can be trusted with the job, these people show up to work, they work their arses off and do the job well. And sadly it is, but they get taken advantage of. And sometimes it's because the management does not care, and sometimes because are not left with many choices, because why would they trust an unreliable person with the job while they have you, the person who gets the job done? Who would you trust if or when needed to delegate? But neither of the scenarios mean that they are not looking to promote you when they see a good opening for you. I would suggest talking to someone in the leadership about your willingness to grow in the company. Try to find a person who seems to care about having smart hardworking people around (as well as in the leadership) for the purpose of the company's success and being the best of the best, not to simply get job done to fly under the radar and having your, for example, branch not stick out as underperforming in comparison to others in your region. There is a great deal of leaders who live and work having only one worry in mind - not being called out by their bosses, by all means necessary. Sometimes you can see them running like chickens with their heads chopped off after they get a call from their boss. A lot of running around in general and talking, giving inspiring speeches, but they don't actually get things done and are not interested in growing other people. Those will not get you anywhere. Find the opposite in your company, ask to talk to them, say that you want to grow, learn and take new responsibilities, and say that you can handle your workload and then some, but you are left with no room for your professional growth and would like to have that person as your mentor because you would want to see yourself being that person one day. Doing the same repetitive tasks over and over becomes boring for a smart person and it is great to want to learn more. Unfortunately, a lot of people like you get discouraged because they are not being recognized for their hard work. As she said in the beginning of the video, we have to learn to sell ourselves, make ourselves visible. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I wish you luck!

You guys are criticising how the world works and rejecting it as some sort of bs, which it is, but if you want to get to where you want, you gotta adapt and stop coping for your inability to take part in these social games, once you're in a position of control where you can change how things work, then you take things into your own hands and start changing this bs. I'm 1 year away from finishing my CS degree, and can spend literally all day just talking about all the bs social games we have to take part in just to get the grades we need, but we gotta adapt and try our best to get into a position where we don't need to be part of these bs social games. Ultimately it's about your discision of whether you want to focus on your mental health or your career, and the ones who win the lottery are the ones who can take part in these games without it affecting their mental health negatively, or at least they have the skill to manage it's negative impact untill they get to where they want.

There is nothing about this that is not true, but there is something awfully pernicious that is at the core of this. It's something like "Corporate is your new god" and he/she who drinks the most of the corporate Kool aid get the supposed prize. I find that there are some sacrifices you can't take back all in the name of monetary gain. This mindset we obsess over is how you get a situation of people sitting around a table strategizing how to screw clients and customers more efficiently. The cost of speaking up and out is not in the employee handbook. Glad I work for myself now because working around this level of vapid behaviour would kill me inside and out.

@@TheRelevantUnknownthis isn’t even antisocial. Playing childish games with work politics is literally six year old behavior. This video is for people who never grew up and can’t just coldly do their job and need drama at all times

I’m thinking of just slacking the cto and ceo directly with a presentation on how to fix processes because it’s so frustrating for me as the tech specialist. I’m more senior and experienced than the dept heads. I just wanted to Code but can’t do that because I’m constantly putting out fires for clients. It’s like management are overwhelmed and don’t understand their own management strategy

meritocracy is not a good system, and the people in the top are not better than the people at the bottom. Once you realize that you can engage on your terms. It's not in everyone's interests to "climb the ladder". whatever happened to "servant leadership". I would rather have an awkward boss than Michael scott than a try hard do-gooder who wasn't a good fit for the position. Everyone should be mature adults and if you are diligent in your job in the long run you will just have a better time, regardless of whether that's the best way to maximize status and opportunity. Edit: The point about self advocacy is important. thanks for sharing.
