Thank you so much Mike! I just took up drumming at the age of 57 in September, as I am having a rest from 15 years of slaving as a university lecturer - a complete break from work. I have hardly been off my new electric drum kit since and have watched loads of your videos. They have been so so helpful - love this beat and also your very good advice to take it slow and show your hands and body what to do before picking up speed. I have arm muscles now!! Loving it all. You are an epic teacher.

Really appreciate your clear and down-to-earth instruction, been enjoying your videos for a while - so first off, THANKS! And I have a mundane question. I'm a self-taught drummer and once in a while, just for fun (with no desire to monetize!) I post covers on Facebook and Instagram...but almost every time I've gotten those threatening notices re copyright violation (though it seems the video wasn't actually taken down?). Is there any way for amateurs like me to post drum covers legally (ie avoiding threatening messages) without paying for licenses? Or maybe it's possible to buy one-off licenses for certain songs? I only post a cover once every 1-2 months, if that, and I have no intention of making money 🤪

@3:50 - watched a Marky Ramone 'how to drum like Ramones' video - and he really put the time in for that 16th note mechanism.. he sounds like a machine when he does it - no 'groove' just repetitive time.

Elementary question, what is an up beat/down beat?
@MikeBarnesDrums
@MikeBarnesDrums 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick, thanks for watching. "Up beat" generally refers to the last beat of a bar, preceding the "down beat", which is beat one of the next bar (the terms "up and "down" derive from the movement of a conductor's hand). I actually accidentally said "up beat" 16ths here at 1:53 when I meant "off beat" 16ths - in that terminology "on" beats are the 1st, 3rd etc of a repeating rhythm figure (assuming the total number of notes is even), whereas "off" beats are the 2nd, 4th etc - so in 16th notes "1" and "+" are the "on" beats, the "e" and "a" are "off" beats. Thanks for bringing that to light! Cheers.

@@MikeBarnesDrums Thanks Mike! is it off beats 16ths because you start the song with cymbals then to hi hat
@MikeBarnesDrums
@MikeBarnesDrums 3 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjames1080 No. It's nothing at all to do with what part of the kit you're playing. When you count "1e+a, 2e+a" etc, the "1", "+", "2", "+" etc are the "on" beats, the "e"s and "a"s are "off" beats. Whatever note value you're playing, the idea is it goes "on-off-on-off" etc (assuming you're playing an even total number in 4/4 with a regular feel). If playing 8th notes ("1 +, 2 +, 3, +, 4 +)" for example, the numbers would be the "on" beats and the "+"s would be the "off" beats.

Can I do the beat with two hands?
@MikeBarnesDrums
@MikeBarnesDrums 3 жыл бұрын
You COULD, you then have to think about the coordination, bringing your left hand to the snare on the “a” of 2 and 4. It also makes it feel different, less authentic to the original in my opinion. And you also lose the hi-hat every time you hit the snare if you do that.
