This is the version I grew up with. I was the only one in the family who figured out how to program custom ship placements without using the pre-made code versions in the book. I love this game and am gonna pull it out when I'm next at my parents house over the holidays.

I have been thinking about this game. We had it at a family condo and I remember so many memories playing this. What a fun game! I had to look it up because when they sold the condo it went with it. I kicked some butt playing it lol

This was an upgrade to the “Electronic Battleship” since it was released in 1989, they added a voice synthesis feature to the game and it was different buttons, and the board layout and design looks exactly like “Electronic Battleship”. The 1979 “Electronic Battleship” has sound due to the lack of voice clarity, same as with the original 1977 and 1982 editions has sound lacking the voice. It can also plays a solo player against the computer.

There is a way to program any formation of ships you want. That is why the first four buttons have directions

Of course there’s volume control, you control it by placing your hand over the speaker when you want it to be quieter. 😁

That's the exact model talking battleship that I had I got one for my 29th birthday and yours has the same voice as mine there was another version that I was trying to figure out what year it came out that had the same sound but it had a different man doing the voice and a lower pitch man's voice

I found this at a Good Will store a few years ago. It wasn't working. I opened up the battery compartment and saw the batteries were still there but had leaked. I carefully removed the batteries and cleaned the compartment as best I could. It seemed like I cleaned it all. I put new batteries in it. It didn't work at first but after a few more "ON" button pushes, it came back to life and it still works. I had it when I was a kid but the battery compartment broke. The wires to the battery holder seem to break easily so you've got to be careful when changing the batteries.

I bought one of these at a thrift store also. It also had a corroded battery compartment. I purchased another holder for 4 AA batteries, cut the old battery holder off, wired in the new battery holder, and got the game working.

Do you have to select one of the premade layouts or can you play your ships where you want them?

I'm pretty sure there is that option. It just takes longer. If I can find the game in my collection, I will take a look.

When it asks for Letter-Number, I believe you go straight to hitting the Enter/Fire button. Then it’ll go ship by ship asking for Letter-Number-Direction, at which point you select the coordinate of either end of the ship followed by North, South, East, or West to indicate the direction the rest of the ship is pointing in in reference of the coordinate you used.
