@markis pea welby Can this be played "flat" or does it have to sit up at an angle?

It can be played both ways, but the problem with laying the unit flat is that both players have no privacy on their ship locations(unless both players lay flat on their stomachs while playing) since the target grid is too low. With the unit set-up at an angle, the target grid is high enough so you can't see the opponent's ships and vice versa, as long as no one looks left or right around the target grid.
