I’ve started playing in the dark before bed. It forces me to feel the fretboard (and NOT STARE at it while I play!). I highly recommend. It felt impossible to begin with but the progress is undeniable. Thanks again Justin.

Great Tip! My fingers tend to be a couple of mm behind the frets - so this will really help me get them in the right position by feeling for the fret wire. Thanks Justin! Anyone else noticed that since Nitsuj, Justin's videos have got even better - and really connect with the issues and challenges that beginners face?

Thanks Justin...your tips are the best. Back when I was teaching myself guitar in college in the 70's, I ALWAYS had to look at my left hand when playing even after a couple of years. My chord changes were fine but I HAD to look. One day, during a bad storm, I was practicing and boom...the lights went out. So, I figured I would try to keep playing and...I discovered that I could and with no problems at all. I was stunned. All these years later I am willing to bet that if it were not for that storm, I would still be having to look at my left hand when playing. (I am talking major and minor chords here, nothing fancy up and down the neck except root 5 and root 6 Barr chords and open chords.)

Nice one Justin. For all those reasons, but especially your enhanced feel and your audience believing in you (which is why you play live right) I took your advice whilst playing over your video and already I'm not looking back..and not over the fretboard either. It's just easy, and thankyou for leading the way.

really appreciate the lessons mate. I’ve been back at it the last couple of months after learning a few basics 2-3 years ago, I’m up to date with your current beginners course and find it incredibly fun and easy to follow. I’m loving actually putting in the practice and seeing progress, even though it can be slow. I’ve just bought your beginners songbooks 1-2 and I’m looking forward to getting a collection of songs under my belt, I’m a big Neil Young fan so hope to play his songs well soon. Thanks for everything you do, take care mate

I agree. I've only been playing the guitar since Mother's Day this year. But I do have about 2 yrs experience on the ukulele to bring to the guitar. The 1st guitar I learned on was crappy. But this new guitar, I am trying to do most of my practice without looking at the fretboard. and yes it is about tactile awareness but also the auditory awareness. Good topic~

Yeah, I’m in the very beginning stages and don’t even know all the chords yet. My fat fingers tend to mute random strings. However, I finally played the Day Tripper riff with my eyes closed and I was surprised?! I played on feel and couldn’t believe it because I played it better than how I usually do looking at the fretboard or strings I’m picking. I think I was more relaxed and not over thinking my playing. I tried with the Santeria solo and I’m not there yet… it’s tough to go up and down the neck for me when I’m looking but I’m probably making things harder on myself by not learning the basics first… that being the chords

I need advice justin. Ive been learning for 6 week now. I know up to 11 chords. I can more or less get them sounding perfect stringing each note on each chord.. but my main problem is switching to different chords on your app when im playing songs. Im constantly looking to see if the strings are ringing perfect and ill be honest its only about 5 out of 10 times give or take. Im finding this frustrating and do i still progress with your other lessons and keep learning. Or do i do this till i get it at least 9 times out of 10. Thank you very much for your help 😁

Dunno if this helps. But i am at about the same stage and have the same problem as you. I move on to the next bit and learn something new then go back and practice the bits im not so good at. This way you still keep adding to your knowledge every day and still practice the stuff your stuck on.

Hi Justin - When playing Barre chords have you any tips about landing on the right fret for the chord you want to play. For instance if Im playing the G Barre chord on the sixth string third fret, I'd like to be able to land on the eighth fret for the C chord or the tenth fret for the D chord every time without looking. I notice all the Pros can do this easily. Any tips?

My third finger cannot reach beyond the middle of the fret for the c-chord as I have very small hands. Even on my 24in scaled Mustang I can't reach all the way. On a 22 in I can, I think, but I don't have any of those guitars that can't stay in tune.

A string can be fretted succesfully mid way between frets! Play a E or A chord and look where your fingers are.
@alexv7745
@alexv7745 3 жыл бұрын
True, but you will have to press harder and thus hurt your fingers more (the so called “hammering technique”).The trick Justin is explaining makes you press as light as possible which results in lesser sourness of your fingertips and speeds up your chord changes. Try it, you will be amazed with the result.

Great video as always :) Um, I have a question about finger nails, can i ask it? I’ve heard that the finger nails of your left hand(the hand that presses down the strings) will get shorter as you play guitar. If this is true, will my finger nails stay like that forever? Or will they eventually come back to how they used to be?

Isn't it hard to do with some chords? Like the E chord or A chord? For E, should you be able to feel the third fret with the second finger? I find my third finger gets in the way. Same for the A chord: the second and third finger gets in the way of the first finger.
