How To Play The KMS Gneisenau In World Of Warships

The Gneisenau, sister ship to the Scharnhorst and the first Kriegsmarine Ship in the game. Also the first true Schlachtschiff (Battle Ship) in the game for the Germans. She plays like Scharnhorst but with punchier, albeit less accurate guns. I really enjoy Gneisenau's gameplay however I don't keep her around as there are other ships I'd rather play. T7 is such an awkward tier for ships and there are few T7's I keep around! :)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video. Her setup is pretty straightforward. Focus on secondaries, point bow just slightly off of your intended target, enjoy being nearly immune to incoming fire and when the guns don't kill em, finish them off with the torpedoes! This is really where the German Battleship Line gets stupid fun! :)

The company Krupp which produced the turrets were unable to deliver the 38 cm double ones, thats why it was fitted with 28 cm tripple turrets. During the last bombing the allies hit turret Anton which is in the front which caused a massice chain reaction, it didn't ever penetrate the armor, but caused movement in the cartridge platform wich produced spraks, and eventually made the cartridge storage room to explode. It did undergo a massive restoration process, and Hitler did want to equip it with 38 cm double turrets, but instead all three turrets was placed in three locations. Tower Anton (the one in the front) was placed as three individual canons in Rotterdam (only the 54,3 ton canon barrels were recovered from the bombing) tower Bruno was blaced outside Bergen in Norway. The last one, tower Ceasar is placed in central Norway. I have worked as a guide at this turret for 5 years. Its the best maintained turret in the world, and the location is called Austrått Fort.

There was also the slight hiccup that the 15-inch gun was in the design stage and wouldn't be available for two years. Two weeks after the Channel Dash the Brits landed a bomb hit that blew apart the forward magazines and totally wrecked the Gneisenau's forecastle. The ship was so damaged they started, then stopped, work on the 15-inch gun conversion. A lack of workers and the war situation brought the work to a gradual halt.

I think a lot of it has to do the accuracy vs penetration of the guns. The 15" guns pack a lot of punch but they also are inaccurate as heck! Hard to be consistent with the guns for damage.

My personality is a sniper, which is why my first V+ BB choice was the Fuso, as the sniper ship. But when I discovered the Gneisenau, I knew I had to play and master it. It seemed so fun and exciting to shoot BBs, come in close, and finish them off with the torpedoes. And guess what? It fits perfectly for my gameplay. Today I had two encounters that I loved. First one was with a Bayern, it was 10 kms away from me at first, and I was like 30k health, and I knew I wouldn't make it through with a gun to gun fight, so I started to rush directly at him to get a torpedo hit, and I angled it perfectly. All 3 torpedoes hit, and I got the Devastating Strike badge. I ended up living and winning that round with 1.3k health left. Second encounter was a Kirov, rushing at me from behind while I was "busy" with an Italian BB. My secondary build demolished the Kirov almost fully, but I ended up having to finish the Kirov with a citadel hit. Overall, I am satisfied with the Gneisenau, it's a perfect ship for me. But the match really depends on your teammates, whether they will die the first 5 minutes, or they will actually have a stragedy, and team work. *important part of the comment: the gneisenau gameplay style (atleast mine) is basically hit and run. Be careful, but don't miss a chance to strike at the right time. If you happen to encounter an angled ship, spray them with HE shells (they cause fires most of the times, lucky hits make 2 fires in 1 shot from 2/3 turrets.)* also for gods sake, you arent a cruiser or a destroyer to rush, just dont. you will most likely come out the first ship destroyed...

Appreciate this - I like the Gneisenau but have been struggling with the not-many-guns/dispersion problem. Watched this after a Panzerknacker showcase of a Gneisenau shooting down 71 planes. (Saipan player thought his Tier IX planes should rule the map, instead they ended up boosting the Gneisenau player's XP considerably. Then, in an ultimate sucks-to-be-you, failed the ram against the Gneisenau at the end of the game.) Bottom line - long-range camper/sniper typical of NA server BB gameplay is not going to work. You have to push and get someone to push with you.

another good vid Whiskey, one thing you either forgot or not aware of is that one of Gneisenau's turrets can still be seen today outside the Norwegian city of Trondheim. A picture of it can found on the Scharnhorst-class Wikipedia page. Also the Colorado-class ships weren't designed with nor were they intended to be AA barges. They were designed during WWI and construction was delayed following America's entry into the war to focus on merchant and anti-submarine ship construction. Though the USS Maryland was laid down in 1917 and completed before the Colorado was launched.

They indeed are still on "display" there. Not sure what kind of order they are in. I'm curious so I'll go look and see if I can find some videos. As for the Colorados. I'm aware they weren't built in real life to be AA barges, if they were it'd be a horrible misuse of materials. My comment was in reference to Wargaming saying that the USN National Flavor is "Anti Aircraft" and that it was supposed to be the specialty of the USN BB line to have superb AA and good armor layouts. Both of which have been made irrelevant by the German BB line which is better in both up to T8 and even after T8 aren't far behind their USN peers.

Oh I wasn't aware WG had assigned such a distinction to US BBs, and as I wasn't to impressed with the Wyoming and New York's AA abilities I'd say it's debatable to generalise the whole line in that matter. I'm still grinding through the NM to get to the Colorado, I've heard some bad reviews about it and I know the RL ships were good so I'm reserving judgment till I get it unlocked. Though I think WG definitely needs to increase it's HP pool, just barely over 50k is pretty pathetic for fully upgraded T7 BB don't ya think? As for the German BBs, I'm about to unlock the Konig and had one of my best games ever in the Kaiser. Nearly 100k damage including 3 simultaneous citadels on a SC at near max. range which earned "Devastating Stirke" and earned "High Caliber" by the end. Sadly the enemy team won by 1 point when the timer ran out. But anyway I wonder how the Bismarck and Tirpitz would have fared in RL against the kind of massed air attacks their US contemporaries did in the Pacific?

The reality is they wouldn't have fared well at all. That's not brash nationalism either. It's merely an observation that in terms of design considerations, AA was pretty low for the Germans compared to the USN. Even as early as the 1930's the USN began putting serious AA onto their ships as well as planning for the future by tying in the gun systems to the fire control radars. If the 5"/38cal DP mounts on the Iowa/NC/SD/WV/Maryland were self loading they could have fired them entirely from within the fire control stations on the ship without any localized control. That was true when the NC was laid down in 1937. That puts her design sometime in the early 1930's. Iowa isn't really much newer than the NC and SD were!

(I am not very good - only played for 5 months). I like the Gneisenau but find it difficult to play. I have real problems with the dreaded RNG troll, and so many times I straddle the target (ie I am on target, but the shells go all over the place) you seamed to have a much better experience in you video. I know you have to get close and it can take a lot of damage with close quarters fighting, but then you get the problem with the speed and over reaching your team and getting left behind and you die quick. I think I am too aggressive with play (and lacking experience of course), but it was good to watch you explanation. Finally, yes the AA is good, and as an AC player, you have to be careful with these ships.

Yeah they are great ships! I stopped playing mine (although I still have Scharnhorst) because of the lack of support from teammates but when I division up with some clanmates we will sometimes bring out the German BB's! :)

I have both and used to play the Sharnhorst the most, but now I play the Gneisenau almost exclusively at tier 7. I think because I earned this ship and didn't just buy it makes it mean more to me. The Sharnhorst does play differently than the Gneisenau, and I usually do better in it., but I still like the tech tree ship a little better for reasons mentioned.

It should also be known that they started to refit her with the 15 inchers AFTER her bow got blown off in dry dock. And after Graf Spee was scuttled at Plate hitler ofc ordered all ships scrapped. We all then know about how raeder resigned ofc, though instead of scrapping all surface ships, Dontiz was able to keep all of them, but work on gneisenau had to stop sadly, same with the Fleugzeugdampfer class, he never managed to convice adolf otherwise. But yes, up till that point in your talk about her you were more or less correct in everything. Great video m8.

By these same standards, the Iowa-Class are battlecruisers in all but name. As it is, Iowa and her sisters _are_ indeed battlecruisers since the only two categories that are considered are armour tonnage by percentage of total tonnage threshold, and gun calibre. The classification "fast battleship" is quite a misnomer. The Kongou-Class "fast battleships" were very much still battlecruisers despite the major improvements made during their excellent reconstruction program.

little more complicated than that, absolute tonnage is not the measure, battlecruisers and battleships generally had similar weights the battlecruisers sacrificing armor weight for more weight of machinery and higher shaft horsepower. a ship is considered a battleship if she is armoured enough to possess a zone of immunity against her own armament, which scharnhorst and gneisnau did have,. they also lacked the speed required in a battlecruiser maxing out at around 28 knots slower than the the king george V at 29-29.5. They werent good battleships historically lacking the speed to run away or the firepower and armor to stand against any contemporary, hell the pair in concert got chased off by a ww1 era R class ship. Scharnhorst got shot to hell , and her 11 inch guns couldnt penetrate the KGV armour

putting the AAA module instead of secondary (cuz I got those buffed by cpt skills) and choosing an catapult fighter (x 2 by level 1 cpt skills) the ship can reach an staggering 96 (!!!) AAA capability, (93 without flag) - and, literary, will chew-up planes after planes. Note I do not use (yet, lol) the manual AAA targeting (level IV cpt skill ) but on the games with 2 cvs I usually get MORE planes downed then the cv on my team ! (15-30 air kills ) . Its a lot of fun to watch 2 wings of TB loosing a plane each 3-5 sec once they get to close of me . Many cv players on mid tier do not pay attention at the AAA capability of enemy ships on the loading screen (where you can put your cursor over an enemy ship and see that) - so they get caught on mid game... I only have this ship 2 weeks now, but I do love her. 96 AAA at tier VII its a lovely surprise for me, I confess.

Yup! German BB AA is surprisingly good when specced for it. In fact, the server side average stats for all German BB's surpasses the USN ships until T8 so I'm not surprised Gneisenau is a strong AA boat!

your information on its guns is far different then what I have read and seen on documentarys The ships were designed with 15 inch guns in mind. The Graf spee was one of 3 ships but they had planned to make 6 and the guns were already made. This meant they had 18 11inch guns already to go and the 15 inch guns were going to take an additional year to make. Thus the decision was to go with the 11s and they upgrade latter.

HMS glorious would beg to differ with you on their notable service. They were part of the invasion of Norway campaign and the pair found the British carrier with 2 destroyers and sank all 3 making history as the only battleships to ever sink a carrier. I do allow the possibility that one the taffy 3 escort carriers could of been sunk by the Japanese battleships at leyte but it could of been a heavy cruiser that did it as well plus they were not considered battle carriers so its debatable as to whether it would count.

The 11" rifles on board Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are not the same 11" rifles on board the Deutschlands, they are longer in length. I also thought I mentioned that the ships were designed with 15" guns in mind, but still had to undergo refits (and lengthening) to mount them due to the increase in tonnage and that Gneisenau was actually in port to receive this upgrade when she was attacked, repeatedly by air. It has been a while since I watched this video though!

Battleship Players in general don't push up enough and thus spend too much time sniping from the back. It's annoying to see a Bismarck or GKF sitting in the back while the Montana and cruisers are up front tanking damage.

I managed to grind trough the Bayern and to anser myself in the comment for that video...she did NOT treat me well...at all....sold her instantly when I had the Gneisenau researched, hated her that much, and I also got the Warspite for T6 battles anyway. It's a bit sad really because I somehow managed my 2nd best game ever (damage vise) in the Bayern with 150k damage and almost a kraken on top of it....but overall I just hated her still due to inconsistency. Didn't even bother upgrading the engine or the range of the main guns....just wanted the Gneisenau ASAFP. But enough about the Bayern...Boy was I happy to take the Gneisenau into battle! Had an unfortunate loss streak at the beginning but now I rock a 60%+ WR in her (I play random games alone) and managed a game in which I sunk 6 enemy ships so far as the best one. That game had it all...long range shots...Close quarter kills of two enemy destoyers that came too close and brawl kills vs a russian cruiser and a Japanese battleship. To top it of I got the kill on the enemy carrier! Oh...and I shot down 21 planes too. Glorious! So this is a keeper and when I get more money I'll get the Scharnhorst, no question about it! Now I can't wait for the Bismarck, but for that ship at least I can enjoy myself during the ride! I've got no desire to rush towards Bismarck due to how fun the Gneisenau is. Her cannons are not super accurate but they behave a lot better than the ones on the Bayern, so long range usually works just fine. If I miss it's mostly my fault because I miss that the enemy are going at a slight angle for example so i overshoot or undershoot at them. And as you say....you want to get in closer anyway so the accuracy is only an issue at the very start of the game.

Gneisenau is fun and I really enjoyed the grind through her, but with Scharnhorst being a better fit for me, I dunno, I just feel better playing Scharnhorst. Plus it's a premium and a captain retrainer! :)

actually…the bomb did not penetrate the armored deck. it is said the flame went through a opened hatch to magzine and caused a fire and explosion. that put it out of action for ever. the plan is to make a modification and use 15 in gun but it never finished because of the war progress.

Kind of arguing semantics, the end result was that the bomb caused the ship to be taken out of the fight for the remainder of the war. A similar argument can be made when discussing if the bomb that destroyed the Arizona penetrated the primary magazine or not. The end result is the same! :)

It’s mainly so it can play differently from the Scharnhorst. Gneisesnau did have a planned upgrade to the twin gun turrets, so the weapon systems are based on the planned upgrades rather than the triple gun turrets she had. The twin turrets are 350’s however, similar to the Bismarck, whereas the triples are only 280, so it does have some balance.

I believe there is an option in the launcher for high definition sounds, if it isn't there, check the in game settings! :) I don't use mods for anything but fixing the blast bag texture color on the Iowa/Montana class battleships! :)

As I mention in the video, this IS Gneisenau, this is what she was under refit to become when she was damaged beyond repair in port. Yes, she originally launched with nine 11" guns like Scharnhorst did, but Hitler wanted them upgunned to 15" guns. Gneisenau was the only to start the process.

I only recently started playing WOW, and these videos are very helpful for people new to the game! Often the history is not 100% spot on, but you did pretty good. When you pronounce her name, drop the "G". This is the Scharnhorst class of battlecruiser, when talking about the 'class' it's typically the lead ship that names the class, therefore it is not the Gneisenau class. WOW gets it quite wrong however, as there are no battlecruisers in the game. Battlecruisers carry battleship-sized weapons, but will have fewer of them or lighter armor, etc. Hood was lightly armoured for this reason, Hood was designed as a battlecruiser, not a battleship, Repulse, Courageous, etc. all Battlecruisers. I wish the game would correct this issue, because it's really annoying to anyone who has been connected to naval history, etc. for a long time. There are also many other ships that would be nice to see in the game; 1st World War SMS Seydlitz comes to mind, as another battlecruiser with a fantastic history and American Alco PT boats and German E boats to name a few. Hopefully if they are adding submarines, other classes and ships will also be added to properly fill in the gaps.

Actually Gneisenau isn’t the lead ship of the class. Gneisenau is a Scharnhorst-Class, and why it’s the standard ship and not a premium like all the other ships that are not the less ships of their class (with the exception of Graf Zeppelin) is beyond me. Also Gneisenau never had 380mm guns, she had 280mm guns just like Scharnhorst. *Edit* nvm

That would be... unusual... Gneisenau is an old German name and most sources agree that the g is pronounced and not ignored (like it would be in English). I've also spoken to a bunch of Germans on this (and many other names, trust me, they are very apt to correct which is great! :P) and they all said the G is pronounced. Maybe a regional dialect thing? I plan on revisiting these ships here in not too long because these and the USN DD videos are quite old. I don't know what I'd recommend at this point. You can always give it a try and see if it works for you!

Wow, the Wiki page for this class is confused... the rules for American Ships are: the ship whose keel is laid down first is the lead ship, and the class is named after it. The Wiki page is suggesting Scharnhorst is the lead ship and the class name, despite the Gneisenau being laid down and commissioned first... Rather strange.

A contemporary case in point... there is some confusion over the USS North Carolina and the USS Washington... NC or Washington Class? The answer is NC class because her keel was laid down first... the cause for the confusion is due to the fact that the Washington was finished and commissioned first. I don't know about German rules, so I have no idea which ship is supposed to carry the class name :-(.

Gneisenau is just hard to play. I plan on redoing these ship lines sooner, rather than later... just a matter of getting the time to do it since the German BB line and US DD line are my two oldest video lines currently! =O

I'm playing this on console stock. It isn't fun. 17 second rudder shift with the module to improve it and it doesn't move fast. I think I need the hull B upgrade asap.

Just bought this today, went into battle 100% stock, did 128k dmg and 4 kills. Didn't really notice any terrible dispersion, or im just used the bayerns 1.8 sigma

Maybe, I dunno. At closer ranges it is less of an issue but I could never get the guns to feel right for my play style. Bismarck brings back usable guns though so for me it wasn't a big enough deal to ditch the line entirely to have the T6 and T7 both have pretty lame accuracy for their tiers.

I try my hardest to get it right! It's only fair to the crews that manned them to at least get it in the ball park! I hear so many people say the names wrong and what little German I know causes me to cringe when they say it! :) Bismarck could be released tomorrow if I wanted to. The battle video is done, just need to do the port video and put it all together. It'll get done on the weekend and posted on Monday per the road map I laid out in my new video! :)

In game, Gneisenau does NOT have 11" guns. Wargaming chose to send her out with the proposed twin 15" gun upgrade that Germany was planning for her and Scharnhorst during WWII but never got completed due to the war ending. Scharnhorst has her original 11" gun compliment though!

I just got this ship the other night. Still working on getting it upgraded without using up all my free XP. Already had a Colorado salty at me for him being close to full health and me being at about half. He kept showing too much side and I whittled him down and finished him off with torpedoes and finished with still having around 3k health.

Please don't call gneisenau and Scharnhorst a Battleship. They both fall in the battle cruiser class

They actually don't. A Battlecruiser has battleship caliber guns while sacrificing armor for speed. The Scharnhorst and Gneisenau did not sacrifice ANY armor and their guns are technically battleship caliber. Admittedly, among the modern design battleships they have the lowest. Fast Battleship or bust... but their armor design was never compromised to achieve speed.

Indeed it is. The reason for this is because WarGaming wants gun caliber (diamter) progression to exist. Gneisenau was scheduled to receive the 15" gun mounts seen in game but was too heavily damaged and the war was going too poorly for the Germans to finish it before war's end so it was canceled. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were basically identical to each other in real life.

Why do you feel its better to use Secondary Battery Mod2 vs. Aiming Systems Mod1? Sure secondaries are nice to take out close range ships but her turrets turn fast enough that you can AP DDs and do considerable dmg. I could see an argument being made for using that mod on the Bismarck but I feel like the Gneisenau is better suited for the accuracy mod........especially because she only has 6 guns so you want those guns to be as accurate as possible. That being said, I'm a guy who has built their Montana for secondaries because why not? xD

Usually when a ship is that close already it's probably a cruiser or a destroyer, all places where I find having accuracy helps more than secondaries being just that much more accurate.

The game isn't meant to be historically accurate, per se. Certain things are, but certain things are changed to fit gameplay. Gneisenau in game is reasonably accurate to her historical self, except that WG chose to "complete" the refit she was undergoing when she was utterly destroyed by allied air attacks.

Even today the G would not be silent. There are only few words in German that begin with Gn, and the G is pronounced in all of them. There's no reason why the name Gneisenau should be different, as it is certainly a German name (referring to Castle Gneisenau in Austria, which itself took its name from the Bavarian family von Gneuss). And in fact, the Duden - which is about as authoritative on the German language as it gets - shows the name to be pronounced as written, including the G: www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Gneisenau
