I use 4 dice .. The pip on a die face counted as even or odd number. The total odd number in the 4 dice gives the number of outcome. So the outcome is 0 ,1,2,3 or 4. This gives the same probability as the sticks .

Or you could just toss 4 coins and count the number of heads

Great video, super informative and clear! This is my first intro to this game so theres prolly a variant play of this already, but i would think that flipping the end section (so that the stars are the 3rd from last rather than last square, and both players exit from the middle last square) would be a bit more fun and make a bit more sense? As it has the same pattern as the other "entry" squares in the beginning, and it would give more meaning/use to those last star squares. But like you said only speculation and it hardly matters as its probably been altered and played as many times as there are stars in the sky haha and im sure each way is valid in its own regard. Also my personal preference would be that each side of the sticks corresponds to each players color and they count their color sides as moves. But you would have to make sure that all the sticks are extra uniform for that i would imagine as to not give one color an unfair advantage if one side is heavier or warped or something. Thanks for the vid!

It is not the same to use a single die like 1D4, 1D6, etc, not only because the game should go from 0 to 4, but also because of the bell curve of probabilities when using 4 binary randomizers, the sticks or coins are very easy to find, so no need to use dice.

I agree. This video was made during COVID-related lockdowns and my hope was to show how my students could put this game together with things they already have around the house. My family usually uses decorated popsicle sticks.

With these basic rules, can you skip over an opponents piece if you roll n and they are less than n spaces away? I can try playing with and without and see which way I like it better, but I’m just curious what you think.

Hello Ryan - for a more complex set of rules and a more interesting game play check out this site and by the way you can use three 6 sided dice as they have each an equal number of odd numbers and even numbers. Throw the 3 dice - odd numbers increment the move count by 1 and only all 3 dice showing even numbers equals a 4 count. Here the site that really opens up this game www.ancientgames.org/royal-game-ur-game-20-squares/
