33:12 That's not what that symbol means. The symbol means the character provides an extra action die.
51:05 The Companions must stop in a Shadow Stronghold so you couldn't move them past Moria in this situation.
52:52 That's not true. The Companions are not automatically eliminated when you enter the Mordor track, they stay with the Fellowship. They are eliminated when you try to separate them.
And when I say Smeagol, I mean Gollum. Smeagol is a character from the expansion. He's different.

Actually, when the ring bearers arrive in mordor, companions still in the fellowship remain in the fellowship. Gollum becomes guide only when no one remains in Fellowship for whatever reason

I think the biggest obstacle to getting your head around this game is the sheer amount of different iconography on counters, cards and dice. Some of it is very small. The game also assumes a bit of knowledge of the geography of Middle Earth. And the number of figures on the board, what on earth do you do with them. But do not worry this is an excellent tutorial and along with Ricky Royal on the Box of Delights channel, between them they have it covered. And the game is definitely worth learning as it is a tactical and strategic masterpiece. Shame the designers chose awful colours for the miniatures because the board, cards, artwork and the sculptures themselves are just beautiful. If you know nothing about the Lord of The Rings and are asked to play, you may be somewhat confused : Saruman, Sauron, Nazgul, Ringwraiths, Gandalf the Grey, Gandalf the White, Elven Rings, The One Ring, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, Strider, Aragorn, ect ect ect, lots and lots of rich reference to the books. Which incidentally Tolkien said was not a trilogy but actually six books, usually presented in three volumes but commonly available as one large volume. I approach this game as a Tolkien fan and it lets me play in Tolkiens world of Hobbits and Elves and I am completely immersed.

Get Ready for Game Night! When a FP player loses a unit they are discarded from the game. Can you sacrifice an elite and bring in a common from the discard (when none are left in the reserve) ? Also am I playing correctly that when the ring bearer is discovered you reveal him which moves him the amount of spaces equal to current fellowship track plus set the track to 0. Then you can't move until he is hidden and then add movement to the fellowship track and repeat when hunts are successful? Thanks again! My buddy and I just finished our first game this week!! Great Question. Yes, you can replace an elite unit with a regular unit from the discarded "dead" pile when taking casualties. From page 30 of the Rule book under Remove Casualties "When replacing one Elite unit with a Regular one, the Regular unit can be taken from the previous casualties (if any). Otherwise, the player takes the replacement from the available reinforcements, if able. Any Elite units thus replaced by the Free Peoples player are placed among the casualties."

you can retreat into friendly territory that is not yet at war, it's the only exception for moving into territory not at war. the +1 on icon on aragorn and gandalf the white is not added to the army strength, it shows that the character provides a extra action die. the extra strength is covered in the card text on strider, aragorn, gimli, borimer and legolas. regardless of these small errors I found the video helpful and well done. I listened and watched while reading the rule book to help cement the game rules for me.

You are of course correct on both counts. I'm guessing you perhaps watched the video on something other than a PC, where annotations don't show up? I address both of these goofs with text bubbles when the errors occurred. It's frustrating that KZbin never supported annotations on anything other than PCs and even more frustrating that they took annotations away all together. I appreciate your catching the goof though! "One cannot simply walk into Mordor..." Except in this game, the fellowship can? In a game I played, the fellowship walked right through a stronghold of Mordor full of troops, right onto the Mordor track without needing to do really anything. Is this right? It seems really stupid to me and the game ended really soon after that. It also sucks that companions can't be eliminated by other shadow forces, only corruption.

Yes, if the Fellowship has the movement points to do it, they slip by the armies silently and make their way directly onto the Mordor Track. Thematically, you are supposed to think of it like this... The Fellowship is a just a small group of people. It's relatively easy for them to go through a vast territory (even if it's occupied) without being noticed. Sorry it soiled your experience! Hope your future games are more compelling! Thanks for watching!

As the shadow player, you can put eye rolls in the box for each member of the fellowship, this is very important at mt. Doom. For when an eye chit gets pulled it does corruption to frodo's based on eyes in the box.

Both this and Bill Harsh's "Harsh Rules" left out how to declare the fellowship's location, and if there are any restrictions on where the fellowship can be declared. Otherwise, good job. Some font graphics on each section might help with scrolling for a specific rule purposes.

The video is really clear, thank you. We read the rules book through probably 5 times. However we still have trouble with some terminology: declaring the fellowship: what is it and what does it do? How does it work in the first turn of the game and how in following turns?

Thanks for the question. At the beginning of every round of the game, the free people's player may "Declare the Fellowship". Doing so means that the Free People's player will move the ring bearer miniature a number of spaces from their last known location equal to the current number on the fellowship track. This has a few advantages like healing one corruption point if you declare the position in Free people's stronghold. This re-sets the fellowship track to zero, and you then proceed with the game as normal, moving up on the fellowship track as normal every time you move the fellowship. There isn't much sense in declaring the fellowship on the first turn of the game since your last known location is also your current location since you should be at "0" on the fellowship track (meaning you are zero spaces away from your last known location). @@GetReadyforGameNight Yes, I agree, it is nearly impossible. For example, not all aspects of activating nations and moving the marker on the political track were covered. Those gave me a headache and I was constantly consulting the rulebook, as it is an important and difficult aspect of the game for the free people's player. There are some othrr small details that are not that significant. But I think you made a mistake in explaining 'the mordor track', companions need not be separated before entering the track. Overall, I wish I have watched your video before studying the rules, as there are a lot of "we will talk about it later" explanations that cannot be avoided, but it is better to have someone explain and show it. So I played a practice solo game to help smooth out these rules and WOW even by myself, it was so Thematic! The design is brilliant. There were twists , turns, heroic moments, etc. really cool how events seemed to happen when they thematically should. I'm still learning everything but your rules were crucial to get thru it. When they enter the mordor track does it make sense for the shadow player to perform a hunt allocation step? Is it just for any potential eye tiles that are drawn? Also if the free people spend a movement, does the shadow player still have to allocate at least one eye of sauron die at the beginning of the next turn? Also, if a city is being besieged, and on a subsequent turn you can muster, would the mustered troop be in the stronghold or the free area surrounding it hence making it subject to normal combat rules?

Great Questions! Here is my understanding and how I play... Dice allocation while Fellowship in on Mordor Track: Whether or not it "makes sense" is a strategic decision. There is no hunt roll, so adding dice does not increase your odds of finding the fellowship, you just find them. So, as you said, it's about how bad you want to hurt the fellowship if an "Eye" token comes up and how much that is worth losing an action die. The rule about allocating at least one die to the hunt box if the FP moved still applies on the Mordor track. As for mustering in a besieged stronghold... Of course normally this is not allowed. But if a card lets you muster in a stronghold, then the new units would go directly into the stronghold, not the area surrounding it. Best of luck!

Absolutely fantastic review. One question that I still have though is that when it comes time for you to draw event cards and you have 6 already and don't want to have to discard to accommodate the new cards you are supposed to draw, can you just choose not to draw instead?

immaculateboy Great question! You still draw the new card, but then after seeing what it does, you choose ANY card to discard, including the one you just drew. If you already had 6 cards going into this step, you would do this twice. This process becomes more important after you've played a few times and start to memorize the cards. When the fellowship moves, the tracker advances one space on the fellowship track. It does not go to zero unless the free people's player OPTIONALLY declares the fellowship or the fellowship is revealed by the shadow player. You don't actually move the ring bearers miniature until the fellowship is declared or revealed. Hope that helps

Nathan Herte Great questions and thanks for watching! When resolving a character die, the Free Peoples player can move ALL your companions a number of regions up to their level. Even if they are in different groups. For the Shadow player, a character die allows you to move ALL Nazgul, including the Witch King if he is in play.

If the shadow player has gone through fords of isen and now conquered helms deep and then attack the FP player in Westmnet, can the FP retreat to the Fords of Isen if there are no SP troops there or is it the SP region even though there’s no capture marker?

Hello! Excellent job about the rules. I have only one question! Could you tell me where you found the restriction that the two armies of a two different nations are not allowed to be together unless they are in an area that is not considered as a part of either nation? I found in rules only : If a moving Army includes any units from a Nation which is not "at War" on the political Track, it cannot enter a region that is inside the borders of another nation (even friendly) on page 27 and : An army can be composed of units belonging to different Nations fighting on the same side from page 26. Could you tell me page where i can find rule you are talking about here? :)

Are you referring to what I say at the 25:30 minute mark? If so, you may have misheard me... I am basically restating the rule you reference from page 27. What I said was "Two armies of two different nations are not allowed to be together, unless they're in an area that is NOT considered part of either nation." Which is to say, an army cannot enter the borders of another nation, even a friendly nation, unless that army is at war. I hope that helps. Thanks for the questions and thanks for watching!

How does one paint their mini figures as shown in the video

Lincoln Sullivan There are many ways to paint miniatures. In my case, I was only interested in painting the bases to help distinguish the army units. The basics are.. 1. Wash the mini with dish soap and water to remove any residue or oils. Allow to dry 2. Apply a layer of primer to the bases. Allow to dry. This allows the paint to adhere to the plastic better. 3. Apply a layer of the desired paint color to the primed bases. Allow to dry. Add 2nd or 3rd coat as needed. I used acrylic paint. I do not recall what brand as it was many years ago. Hope that helps!

It’s been YEARS since I painted them, and I honestly don’t remember what brand it was. MAYBE it was Testors? But any acrylic paint would work. I’d recommend that you apply a coat of primer first, again, any brand would do. For mini painting today, I mostly use Vallejo paints, but Army Painter, Citadel, Liquitex or any brand would do fine. Ask a dozen miniature painters which brand of paint is “best” and you’ll get two dozen answers ;). If all you’d like to do is paint the bases like I did. I guess I’d recommend something really inexpensive like Americana paints from Hobby Lobby. If you plan to more painting with whatever you choose to buy, then I’d go with one of the more well known lines of paints marketed toward miniature painting. Best of luck! And Thanks for Watching!

Concerning restrictions of army movement....if for example sauron is at war, and gondor isn't, could they move into and attack within gondors borders or do both have to be at war? I guess I'm really struggling with the whole rules of activating a country

Hello again! The restrictions on movement and being “at war” only pertain to the nation doing the movement. So in your example, Sauron COULD attack a Gondor region. This action would immediately “activate” Gondor and move it one step toward “at war” on the political track. I LOVE War of the Ring, so PLEASE don’t hesitate to ask questions or give me a session report when you’re done with your game! Also, I’d recommend watching this video on a computer, not a mobile device or TV or anything else. I make a few mistakes and correct them using “annotations”. And KZbin has since turned off annotations on all playback devices except computers. Thanks for watching!

All I did was buy some inexpensive paint from my local hobby shop and I tried to match the colors in the rule book for each race/faction as best I could. It took me about half a day to paint everything. It was a long time ago and I don't remember the brand of paint that I bought, but I do remember that it was NOT Citadel or Vellejo (the more "professional" brands).

Great question. Whether or not you need a leader in the army to move it depends on which die you are using to move them. If you are using an Army/Muster die, then that die can move ANY army, whether it has a leader or not. If you are using a Character die to move an army, then the moved army must include a leader. @@harryrowe6049 I tend to think more along the lines what the ACTION DICE can do. An ARMY die can be used to move ANY TWO separate armies one region. It doesn't matter if there is a leader or Nazgul with that army. A CHARACTER die (among its other uses) can be used to move any army that has a leader/Nazgul in it. Hope that helps.

Can anyone explain to me why my copy comes with 2 decks of the exact same cards? I see in the video the small cards are used, but I have a set of the longer cards that the game specific sleeves fit perfectly and I am confused why they give both, the sleeves fit one deck, but the board is fitted for the other

I think you have some of the movement rules wrong... Or possibly just mis-spoke. (Double check the retreat section for example) It was my understanding that an army could retreat into another free people's territory even if they weren't at war, but had to move from the territory ASAP once that conflict resolved. And how about you can't have a leader in an area without other units? Not criticizing btw, trying to understand this game so I can correctly play it.

Lynn Smith you are certainly correct that a leader (other than a companion) can never be alone. I just didn't mention that. I'll double check the retreat rules. Instructions for introducing the Witch King, and all the special characters, are printed on the reverse of the character cards. The Witch King specifically is introduced as follows... First, make sure the requirements for his introduction are met, that is, The Sauron nation must be at war, and at least one free peoples nation must be at war on the political track. If those conditions are met, as an action, you may spend a Muster die to bring the Witch King into play. He comes into play joining any shadow army that contains at least one shadow unit. Bringing him into play immediately activates all of the Free Peoples nations. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and enjoy the game!

I want to ask something. If the fellowship was revealed and it looked like it would be in say Moria, couldn't the hero player just say ah no I went west to like say trollshaws at 43:55 what's to stop that?

Great questions. The short answer is nothing would prevent that. The Free People's player does NOT have to decide what path the fellowship takes when they move the fellowship. They just indicate that the fellowship has moved on the fellowship track. It is only when the fellowship is revealed or declared that the Free Peoples player must lock in the path that was taken. Strategically however, going through Moria is the fastest, most direct way to mount doom. A player may opt to declare that they are in Moria in order to get to the Crack of Doom as fast as possible. This rule is why it's such a big deal whether or not the Fellowship is revealed. If they stay hidden for longer periods of time, they have MANY more options when they are revealed. Yes. There is a stacking limit of 5 when you retreat into a stronghold. I must have omitted that. For better or worse, omitting smaller rules like that is the price I pay for making all of my videos without a script or notes. My goal is create a feeling and cadence as though the viewer is just sitting down with me at the table, learning the game face to face. I sometimes sacrifice accuracy. Sorry about that.
