The isolated queen's pawn, or the IQP, is one of the most important strategic concepts in chess. Knowing how to play with it and against it is crucial in so many different openings, such as the Alapin, the Panov Caro-Kann, the QGA, the Nimzo, and many others.

The side with the isolated queen's pawn usually attacks or tries to get rid of the pawn, which is a weakness long-term. The side defending against the IQP usually tries to blockade the pawn and attack it later, once they've made sure it cannot advance.
