How to PLAY "With Hot Lead and Cold Steel": A Deep Dive!

'With Hot Lead and Cold Steel" Osprey's new America Civil War miniatures rules are out and we are here to help you learn the rules! This video is on the long side but takes you through and entire game. We start out slow to give you a thorough explanation and pick up the pace as we move on. We use a scenario that we wrote after visiting the battlefield of Antietam...its not the famous Miller's cornfield that we will be fighting over but the 40-acre cornfield...less well-known but just as decisive.
*NOTE - We misinterpreted how you roll for ADC points. An overall commander rolls one die per side and distributes the ADC points to sub-commanders. (Per the rules author!)

Looks fun but seemed too easy to break. I'm not sure what the time scale is per turn, but much of what I've read says they stood toe to toe for hours before someone would take off. Maybe the fallback roll stays the same, but the rally phase makes it easier to recover since they aren't under fire any longer. Thanks for the show

Are those the Black Powder Epic Battles’ Civil War figures you’re using for the game?

Yep! We found that the base sizes were a bit too long for this game so we counted each Epic base as two bases for With Hot Lead and Cold Steel. Worked well!

It bought the pieces at a flea market from a guy that hand made them. The bases are old plastic hotel room keys!

Very helpful and enjoyable. I think you did the aide de camp roles wrong. It’s open roll per army not for each brigade. I think ??

I read the rules the same way as you do. I understand that the "Commander-in-chief" rolls for aide de camp points and then he/she decides how they should be used.

You are correct! I checked with Arthur and he confirmed that the C-in-C rolls once.

I bought a copy of these rules a couple weeks ago. Really enjoyed seeing a game played. My question is about the aide de camp points and rolls. I thought the rules were one roll for aide points for the entire army not each brigade commander. Is this correct? Thanks again! I really like this site!

They are supposed to be one roll for a side, not one per brigade. The advanced rules call for two rolls...we mixed that up!

Well I really am not a fan of command points. Would love to see you play the same scenario with say Gettysburg soldier rules or maybe fistful of leads. Large battle rules. I'm a fan of supporting American made rule sets

Very entertaining game :-) The ruleset does copy many many features from Warlord Games' Black Powder, Pike and Shotte and Hail Caesar. Which is not necessarily bad...just a bit unoriginal.

Those Warlord sets aren't original either. Most of their ideas and mechanisms go back to Donald Featherstone, Tony Bath, Terry Wise and others.

Miniature wargames rules are a bit incestuous in that regard. There really isn’t any mechanic that is “original” anymore, but how a mechanic is applied.

Great Antietam battle! Your terrain pieces were outstanding. I’d like to get some for myself. What did you use for fences, stone walls, and the corn (eg. 3D printing, third party seller, kitbashing, scratch-built)? Does With Hot Lead and Cold Steel have modifiers for cover?
