How to Play Woody and Buzz Lightyear in Dungeons & Dragons (Toy Story Builds for D&D 5e)

Today we have a build for Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command in Dungeons & Dragons! Whether you want to be their Toy Story equivalents, or the characters that inspired the toys in the movie, this is how you do that in D&D 5e.

Sharpshooter can be a good feat for Infiltrator Model Buzz. Your lightning laser is considered a simple ranged weapon that makes ranged weapon attacks, so all of Sharpshooter's benefits can be applied. Ignoring cover/concealment, getting full range, AND getting to do the -5/+10 on your laser? BEAUTIFUL.

If Buzz ever has trouble with concentration spells: Step 1: Get a Bag of Holding. Or make your own. Step 2: Store the concentration spells in a Glyph of Warding, on an object with a hole. Step 3: Thread a rope through the Glyphs of a set, and stuff the Rope inside the Bag. Step 4: Object interaction in/before combat, pull out the rope.

@@kyle1078 See, this is where the rules get iffy, and it comes down greatly to whether or not your DM considers moving a bag of holding the same thing as moving its contents, seeing as the “bag” is basically just a portal into an extra dimensional space.

@@charlottefurre1819 If you can’t put a Bag of Holding into a Portable Hole because they are both extra planar spaces, and things only fall out of the Bag when it’s turned inside out rather than turned upside down, then movement within them should be 0.

@@LocalMaple The bag of holding opens many interesting questions- For example. Since it lacks oxygen even if the bag is open, does that mean it's a vacuum? Since it doesn't accept oxygen seemingly- instead having it's own supply, does that mean a bag of holding is entirely dependent on the users whims on what can enter? How -does- it have oxygen that can run out- but be dependent on the people inside rather then a store of oxygen? Since it's described as four feet deep- does that mean items fall in it, thus seemingly having it's own gravity? If not, do items simply float? Does it have it's own gravity? Since it's seemingly connected to the astral plane via putting two bags of holding together and opening a portal- does that mean it's closer to the astral plane then the material plane? If you move the physical plane you are on, would it count as movement? If the astral plane were to explode, would bags of holding cease? Is the Tardis count as being moved that time it's moved via claw? At least in that case the users seem to move a bit with the mobile plane as an example- so if you shake it vigorously, the users inside can feel it- Perhaps it's the same with a bag? Further more - Since it's another plane of existence entirely, can you concentrate on items inside of it? Y'know- Because it's not on your plane of existence? And if it's the case that dimensional travel doesn't affect glyphs- what's stopping people from opening a gateway from another plane of existence, dumping a fuckton of glyphs onto a spot, instantly killing whoever happens to be nearby? If you ask me, if your carrying it with you, you are actively moving the plane of existence your carrying in your back pocket, You may be keeping it's Z coordinate steady, but it's exit point is constantly shifting, thus providing momentum upon the bag. In short- Just ask your GM, they know more about how your reality's workings and may draw their own conclusions on the matter. Because it's Dungeons and Dragons and reality is dependent on the game master.

@@nonya1366 My current DM ruled that the Bag is actually shrunken space on this plane. Like Hermione’s bag in Deathly Hallows. Hence, Glyphs can’t be preserved inside. My next DM said that the Bag is its own plane, a fashionable portal to a pocket dimension. As such, Glyphs can be stored within it, but the movement to place it inside and pull it out means you can’t pass it to an allie 5’ away; they have to use their own object interaction to pull it out, and put us all within a nice Fireball and Ice Knife range. This DM also wanted to put a cap on how many Glyphs we can have. We both agreed that Proficiency is a good initial cap, maybe add our Spellcasting Modifier if Proficiency doesn’t seem broken.

*Sheriff Woody Pride* A living toy (custom lineage) fighter (with levels of ranger) and leader of a ragtag group of other living toys with a strong bond between each other and to a lad named Andy. Uses the pullstring that makes him talk as a whip/lasso, and has a loyal steed in a toy horse named Bullseye. *Buzz Lightyear* A living toy (custom lineage) artificer (or "space ranger") and second-in-command of Andy's toys. He has quite a few handy gadgets to help him on adventures, even being able to fly. "To infinity and beyond!"

Im playing an old rock gnome grannie that rides her mechanical robo dog and now has the sentienal feat so if the dm targets me my doggo imposes disadvantage on the attack. If they attack my doggo I can impose the disadvantage to protect it. My dm hates this so much because I can also protect 2 allies a turn also while preparing spells

The toy versions could be Warforged, though that obviously doesn't work for the in-setting characters that inspired them. You'd have to adjust the starting stats to account for the different racial modifiers and Woody suffers more than Buzz for losing the starting feat. While the non-toy versions fit better into most campaigns, the idea of a Warforged that doesn't realise what they are can be funny.

in order for your beastmaster companion to be a creature you can actually mount, you need it to be at least 1 size larger than you. So in order to do that, you need to make your size Small via custom lineage.

Algorithm fueling fun fact comment: Woody does a lot of mean stuff in the first movie, because he was actually the villain in earlier drafts of the movie. You can even find deleted scenes from that version of the movie, complete with Tom Hanks voice acting. (That's how far into development Villain Woody was the plan for the first Toy Story)

The only thing better for Buzz would be 2 levels of Rogue to dash as a bonus action, now while hasted he can fly 60', bonus action dash, action 1 and 2 dash for a total of 240 feet per round. While not fitting for Buzz Prime, perhaps one of the accessory versions was a Mastermind

So I noticed a while back that Woody is actually pretty good at coming up with big elaborate plans, like the escape from Sid's room (and dog) to rescue Buzz in the first movie, and the escape from Sunnyside Dycare in the third one. Would those sorts of schemes be Intelligence or Wisdom-based? Because if it's the former, I think you might have picked the wrong dump stat for Woody
