How to Play ZX Spectrum Games in Retropie

When you first install Retropie you'll probably have trouble playing your ZX Spectrum games. Everything is installed correctly but it's just not set up properly.
In this video I'll show you how to take control of your Speccy setup and play all the games ever written for the system.

That’s amazing. I’ve been looking for this info for ages ! I’ve always struggled controlling Batman ( the 3D one same as head over heels. ) now I know how to map the buttons. Same in alien 8 as I can’t pick up an item without going back to the virtual keyboard. Long live the speccy.

Great, but for some newer versions to setup fuse, you need to select "Save Core Remap File" in order to save the settings before restart RetroArch. If settings are to messed up, you can choose "Delete Core Remap File" and start over again.

I'm hoping Fuse will be updated to run like the Spectrum Next, with changeable speeds. The sound chip in that machine is excellent. It's not SID, but what is?

Hi. The video info should work with the lr-fuse core. Did you manage to call up the RetroArch settings?

Was going to ask does it require a keyboard permanently attached or can you assign a virtual keyboard to your gamepad, so you can start a game with a keypress. Speccy games require key presses. I have an Amiga mini with Speccy emulator under Pandory, but I can't get the controls to work. I'm hoping this option is better.

It's a shame there is so much menu diving to set it up. I used to have a pi zero, gen 1' inside a ZX SPECCY 48K Rubber KEYED MODEL. It was very slow, but I used to run the Gameboy Emulator on the big TV.

The keyboard does make the whole process easier but I think you can map some keys to buttons. You'd need to look in the documentation. I think you can set something up in the configuration files.

Hello can you not have the piboys buttons start and control the game rather than have to plug in a joystick?

If the piboy is recognised by RetroPie it should work OK.

for some reason holding down my hotkey won't open retroarch. I can to to Retroarch via RetroPie itself but then the options aren't available for me

Check your controller mappings and make sure you haven't got more than one function using the same hotkey combo.

how do i start a spectrum game WITHOUT a keyboard? Ultimate games needs to press 0 start game (sabre wulf)

Unfortunately most of the home computers need a keyboard attached. You can try mapping some controller buttons to specific keys but different games need different keys so it gets very messy.

Sorry, random, came here for speccy advice (have a super console x pro), but wondered how you stay so trim? Gym? Diet? This is not a joke comment BTW! Also, have you used devices like super console to play speccy, amiga, c64 etc.?

Hi. I haven't used the pre built emulator boxes, but I think they mostly use the same RetroArch back end. For the home computers you'll need to have a keyboard plugged in. You can sort of get away with just a game controller but it gets awkward. Thanks for the comments. I do use the gym and try to eat healthily. Oddly enough I've got a few projects lines up for using gaming to help get fit (sort of!!). Watch out for those videos in the coming couple of months.

Hi. The workaround video had to be taken down as someone complained it was encouraging people to break copyright law. I have since made a new video showing you how to use Tampermonkey to alter web page code and used the Emuparadise site as an example of how you can manipulate links. Obviously you should not use this for downloading software, just as a programming tutorial.

Hi. Can you get to the RetroArch menu once the emulator starts? Have you gone through the steps to connect the keyboard to RetroArch. If you followed the steps in the video it should work OK. If not try uninstalling Fuse and then reinstall it. I hope this helps.
