How to polish your super corroded old aluminum wheels. At least how I found to make it work.

Awesome! Another fella said he easily punched out the rivets from the back side, was able to polish all behind there the rivets would sit, and then he probably polished each rivet too! 😬 Good luck! 🍀

You can start with napa aluminum brightener first to get most of the grime and oxidation off.

Looks great. If not mistaken, the rivots were always shinier than the face on the Outlaws/Centerline rims.

Impressive results. I have some wheels to do so I started searching for an approach. I think one easy streamlining here would be to wet or dry sand by hand with 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and then basically do exactly what you did here. Some of those grits are probably replaceable with Scotch Brite grey & red. Another idea is to use rubbing compound and then polishing compound before the Mother's Mag Cleaner - although I wonder what the effective "grit" is for the mag polish. It might be smack in the middle between a compound and a polish? Anyway awesome video thanks for posting this!

Just an FYI, those scouring balls he used for initial cleaning are now available on Amazon in several kits. 4, 2 and 1 inch balls, and they are in multiple coarseness. The 1 inch are game changers on wheels like in the video

Oh brother I know your struggle. I did a set with rivets similar to yours and it was an ass kicker. I did find (half way through the job) that the Mothers Power Ball with the extended shaft really made it a lot easier. You can hold the shaft while the ball spins and apply extra pressure in tough spots like those rivets. Thanks for the video.

If you would use dawn dish soap and water to wash the dirt off first it would make it a lot easier to polish the wheel and not get deep scratches from the debris on the wheel!

@@CaptMaxADV there are 96 on the set I did. I ran the buffing wheel over the rivets first and made them nice and shiny, then I used a brass punch and 2 whacks per rivet, wiped them off and threw them in a can. When i was done polishing the wheel I used a chunk of wood, 2 whacks they were back in nice and snug, all shined up and ready. It sounds like a lot more work but nothing sucks worse than missing a lot on that ring and still having to wipe around every one of those when you're done.

I don’t think mine ever had clear coat, or at least not anything left if it. I bought this truck in about 2016, with the wheels. No idea how they originally were.

I have the same wheels on 98 and man they are weathered badly. Might have to do the same process but mine seem to have a clear coat i might have to remove first. But thanks for the video. A die grinder would have been a bit better with the polishing. Might try to hit it with some wheel acid to clean up the dirt and grime.

Centre punch rivets out from rear, takes a few minutes and much less pain polishing around then. Other than that your rims came up great 👍
@CaptMaxADV3 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! I'd probably prefer all the rivets remaining installed in the end rather than 140 open holes across all the wheels. And the effort to take them out was probably more than I was willing to exert! But I agree, the polishing would have certainly been easier.
@meademorgan66142 жыл бұрын
You do realize, that on some wheels like Centerline, Weld, and some others. The rivets are actually holding the wheel halves together. Remove the rivets, and you will ruin your wheels.
@CaptMaxADV2 жыл бұрын
😂🤣 In some cases yes, and it would be quite obvious to even the least observant of persons I would think. But in this case they are clearly only cosmetic. 👍🏻👍🏻
