How to Polish Aluminum wheels
This is a Part 2 follow up to the video:
Everything you need to know - How to Polish Aluminum wheels
• ✔ Everything you need ...
The previous video, I tested popular products mentioned on KZbin, including polishing with Coke, WD40 and some other products that didn't work one bit.
There were alot of commetns from the first video with suggestions of trying other products like: Flitz, White Diamond, Dura-Coat Metal polish and to get a faster rpm drill / grinder for the Zephyr polish bars.
So, this is round 2, to see if any products can dethrone the Champ from the previous video, the Blue Magic. The Blue Magic Aluminum polish is tested against the White Diamond, Dura-Coat and Zephyr again, but with a faster RPM drill (2800rpm vs 850 in first video)
The results are...hmmm quite surprising!
This time I also prepped the wheels with Muriatic Acid, which was not done in the 1st video. This preps them for polishing and gets alot of crap off with a wire brush. I prefer this to wet sanding, but if wheels are really bad, then you may want to consider a wet sand.
I know I had the POwerball2 ready to go in the video, but never used it because it doesn't help that much. The leverage isn't there with the long rod (which is why the one broke in the first video) and I find a simple 3" sponge pad polishes great on a drill. You can buy a bag of 3" polishing pads, just make sure it comes with the base with the bit, to attach to your drill. Then you can put more pressure on it than you can with the Powerball with the long rod.
Enjoy!
I also have a video on how to Fix Rust on chrome wheels:

Also a video on how to repaint your wheels:

When I was a detailer at a dealership I refused to use wheel acid because it would always give me a nosebleed. Polishing is all about the prep work you are just refining scratches. You could get those wheels to a mirror shine with any of those products with better prep work (lots of sanding). The zephyr type compound works well when you get enough practice with it. The caking you were getting was from having the buffing wheel overloaded with compound. Where the thin paste product seems to work better the more you use the stick compound requires some finesse to get just the right amount on the wheel.

I used to use BlueMagic but I stopped once I seen it has ammonia in it. It tends to cause oxidation on chrome & aluminum I do believe. Used to use it on a set of Chrome 15" Cutlass SSiii wheels. It does help repel water because it has a silicone in it if I recall right

Using acid etches the aluminum thecworsevthing you can donto your aluminum
@shelbycollier9709
@shelbycollier9709 Жыл бұрын
After watching this video, I saw one major mistake. Those wheels/rims are not meant to be "polished". They are spun aluminum not polished aluminum. Spun aluminum will never have the chrome like shine that polished aluminum does and should only be cleaned with wheel cleaner only. By putting acid on them, you stripped the clear coat off most likely. I could also tell by the close ups the acid etched them pretty bad. The reason I'm commenting comes from experience. I have owned many semi trucks and all of them had polished aluminum rims which I did myself...all 10 of them. I HATE polished aluminum for that reason. They are A LOT of back breaking work to keep them looking good.
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand Жыл бұрын
If they were clear coat, Then you can't get the black Tarnish..I know this because 1995 Lamdcruiser wheels that are aluminum but clear Coates, will never produce Black..These do,.which means you are "polishing" Aluminum.
@shelbycollier9709
@shelbycollier9709 Жыл бұрын
@Cruising The Land the acid most likely took it off. That wasn't my main point. The material, although still the same metal is different. I own a late 90's f150 with spun aluminum wheels. They haven't been touched and you can see the peel edges of the clear coat. Years ago I used Blue Magic on them just as I did all my semis but they wouldn't shine like the wheels on my semi trucks. I called my local dealership and they told me using polish on those rims was a waste of time. They had a spun finish not a polished finish. The polish turning black just means it had been stripped down to bare metal. It wasn't my intention to be accusatory only to point out that using acid could permanently damage the metal.

@@gregorywagner9416 Why? There are different levels of coarseness with steel wool. Grade 1, 2, 3, 4 I agree with you.. But grade 000 or 0000? You are wrong. Of course you can. Its like wet sanding with a super fine grit. Now I am sure the best you have used is white diamond, because there are better ones you have not tried in my video.
