What a GREAT technique! There are so many rocks that the tumbler will eat so this is fantastic! It also acts as a hardener/hard protective outer layer.

For cheap home decor yes it works wonders. But if your stone or mineral is valuable, even if it's only valuable to you, it will ruin your mineral or stone. It may not appear to at first, but in a very short brief time the agent will begin to turn yellow as will whatever you spray it on. If you wish to identify your mineral Rock You can forget that and throw it out the window because that's going to be impossible if you spray that crap on there. What may or may not have been fluorescent becomes fluorescent and vice versa. And it changes the color of the rock itself far more than just giving it a wet look a lot of it's natural luster and beauty actually disappears and fades. Then you have what becomes the embarrassingly obvious, as friends come around and go oh that's so and stop dead in their tracks because they notice the peelys. Some might even inquire as to what the hell you put on there. It's a terrible finish even for woodworking..... But even more so for lapidary

There's no substitute for having the patience to polish a rock the right way. I suppose if it's not a hard enough rock to polish, this might be a good cheat.

Clear interior/exterior acrylic will last for years. If it gets nicked up just spray it again. It really works well to bring out the natural color on the natural surface of rocks where polishing would otherwise be detrimental.

My rocks are in the garden outside. How can I make them stay shiny given the various weather conditions Will the automotive clear work?
@74KU
@74KU Жыл бұрын
@@n.jburnett1107 Yes, an auto clear will work, most epoxy base clear paints/resins etc. will work but each have its own application requirements. The principal is that the clear fills in the tiny little imperfections in the surface and then the fluid finds its own level and giving a "polished" or "clear" look before setting. For some extra credit and creep points, you can simulate this using a bit of honey, some clear tape and your bathroom window.. sandwich a smooth layer of honey between the glass and the tape and suddenly you can see through the frosted glass (when done on the frosted side)

Ok, how to varnish a rock more like it. Not that I have anything against that, on the contrary; I think acrylic resin sprays work great on fossils, cracked agate or opal; and other rocks/minerals that polishing may eat away giving them extra strenght. Maybe this can be applied to watter soluble minerals aswell, in order to make them water resistant.

if you wanna make them shine just for a picture you can just rub them on your face, the oils on the face will make rocks look shiny.

The same method is used for shining wooden pipes. We call it "nose oil," and is an alternative to stuff like olive oil (which can go rancid) or carnauba wax (which is expensive and hard to find in the pure form).
