How to Pollinate Phalaenopsis orchid.

See how to remove the pollinia and plant them in the stigma. of the flower. This is the Phal that already has the seed pod I made a few weeks ago. I dont think these new attempts will take, as the flowers are too old, but this shows the technique of pollination. Ofcourse you will cross pollinate with another Phal for a hybrid. I learned this from Calvin Wong at Culture class at the Vancouver Orchid society last month.

3:10 When you say cross pollinate you use the same pollen for a completely different flower. Do you mean the same pollen on a different flower on the same plant or a totally different plant altogether? If you took pollen from one flower and placed it on another flower on the same plant, would the result be different than adding the same pollen from the same flower? Thanks in advance

I dont think so. The trick is putting the pollen from an older flower to a younger fresher flower. That has more chances of taking fruit. ( heh heh- "older man younger lady ")

So are you able to pollinate the same orchid or do you need to cross pollinate them? What would be the difference be if you cross pollinated it? A different variation of both the orchids?

+TheBrokenDoll6 Yes, the cross pollinated will show characteristics of both parents. It is not easy to grow orchids from seeds in home environment. Some people send their pods to growers who put them in flasks and make seedlings.

Amazing! I have two questions. What’s the purpose of doing this? And 2. I purchased my orchid in the fall. Once the bloom died, I was left with its 5 leaves. 6 months later and I have a large new leaf. :) I repotted it last week. It’s doing well. What do I do now to make it bloom again?

No purpose to pollination. Seeds from this are hard to grow. To rebloom your orchid, give it good water, light and orchid food nutrient dissolved in water. Be sure not to overwater the roots, and if plant remains healthy it will rebloom in 6 to 12 months. It helps to keep it cool at night, about 10 deg Celsius cooler than daytime. Good luck...

Elizabeth Ninan Hi Elizabeth, the seeds need to be grown in culture medium in flasks. It is not easy to grow seeds in potting medium. I don't know how they do in Nature...

Hi Detti, no it is hard to get seeds- they are made in labs and kept in flasks of culture media.
