This was super useful! I had an orchid for 2 months and was wondering if it was even alive. I cut it like you mentioned and it grew 5 new stems and is now blooming brilliantly! Perfect explanation and examples. Thank you!!
@angelamichele86514 жыл бұрын
Question: It grew 5 new stems..?? Like the long stems that grow straight up & then have several flowers on each stem.. Or You just trimmed back them stem that was already there.. & now you have branches coming off of that, which are producing flowers now..?? 🤔Just trying to understand what you mean.. Either way, it's Awesome..!! And more than I've been able to do with my Orchid that I got for Mother's Day.. lol😁 I thought I killed it when all the flowers eventually died & fell off.. I didn't know that they went into a resting state for 6-9 months.. Until I started looking it up on KZbin.. lol🤪

Thanks for the really useful tip. We have a phalaenopsis which was bought with a double stem of small flowers, last year, but which has produced over 20 flowers on one stem, on several side branches, this year. It's fine otherwise, with plenty of good leaves and roots. It lives on a window ledge wit morning sunlight. Ambient temperatures range between just above freezing up to 25° C with occasional excursions up to about 30° on a few days in Summer. We feed it with orchid food whilst flowering, and water it once each week for a few hours, adjusting slightly with the seasons.

Everyone is saying ice is a killer. Well I have been using ice cubes, just like the instructions on the orchid said, for about 6-7 months. 2 new healthy leaves, new roots & a new spike with multiple flower pods. Only recently have I been looking into how to treat orchids. And I keep seeing about the no ice rule. I'm actually a little nervous to water it because it's been doing so well with the ice cubes

Thanks for the info I keep most of my non bloomed phals in the front room of my house on the floor under the dinning room table.. I live with smokers... The phals are facing west because thats where the front window is.. there's no heat in the winter the temp probably goes down to 40 degrees when it's 30 degrees outside.. low temps do encourage spikes. flo101

And dillon, I used to think that orchids were all tropical, but it rurns out that you can find orchids every where but antartica, but of course, the orchids they have and almost every orchid you see in stores or greenhouses is tropical.

The only type of orchids you could give really cold water or ice to is a dracula or cypripedium, and you shouldn't even put it on their roots.

I would suggest not following the advise given on this channel lol find a channel that doesn't lead you to believe the lie that you should water tropical plants with ice. Here is an article from a good source for information: oregonorchidsociety.org/ice-cubes-and-orchids. Also orchid board is a good source of information from people who aren't out to make money on other peoples naivety.

I've got one that I got from granny that is no telling how old, I repotted it, cutting off the dried up roots and the old spikes. It's starting a new leaf and the new spike is about 3 inches long. It never got a chance to cool off it just started going again. One thing I saw was to place the plant in sphagnum only and to not water the moss, place the pot on top of some gravel in the catch pan and just keep water in the bottom so that it makes a humid atmosphere for the plant. Seems to work well for me.

I had a plant produce a keiki and then accidentally watered it (and all of my other orchids as well) with vinegar thinking it was my orchard food water (which I had mixed in an empty vinegar jug). So mad. I killed about 6 orchid plants that way, but I was able to completely revive about 4. I realized my error after watering ALL of them that way. Not sure how the smell of vinegar didn’t alert me. Mom brain I guess. But I lost my keiki :-/

Hello, I cut the first time the way you show at the beginning of the video and it re-bloomed. I cut it the second time, but there are no blooms. Maybe I should cut the whole spike? Also, there are new leaves at the top of the second spike. I read that I can cut and put it in the new pot (the new leaves with the root), but it does not have any roots and I don't know what to do with it? Shall I wait a little. Maybe the roots will grow soon, although the leaves grew about 2-3 months ago, but there are no roots. Thanks in advance.
@adampic68678 жыл бұрын
Let roots grow on it first. Also, cut other spikes (if any) completely to let the orchid gain energy toward the new plant

Can you get orchid seeds commercially, and where. How do you get seed from your own orchid -- method of pollination?
@hawkkai29039 жыл бұрын
You can buy orchid seeds through many reliable sellers online. However, germinating orchids is nearly impossible to do in a common home setting. The seeds need to come in contact with a specific fungus to germinate and the conditions have to to absolutely sterile when they're not growing in their native environment. Most people have to send their seeds to a lab to be germinated in flasks. Further more, orchids can take anywhere from 2 to 10 years to bloom from seed (depending on genus/species and growing conditions.
