Thanks for the valuable information! Please note that the "action area" is sometimes obscured by your hand or a part of the orchid. In part I, there's a section where the orchid is completely off camera.

When you Pollinate two different Flowers (Colour Patterns) speaces of phalaenopsis their flower colours will be mixed or they will be for example like the mother plant and the father plant? Cheers thks for sharing very helpfull.

Hi Brad , I just pollinated my orchids a few hours ago and I was just wondering how do I know when the seeds are ready and how do I collect them? Also what does it mean by " flasking?" If you could please answer I would really appreciate it!
@BradsGreenhouse11 жыл бұрын
Hi Kukuskin, Glad you enjoy the videos! The phal is a hybrid, not sure the name, it never had a tag. But it comes from "Rainbow Greenhouses" here in BC

Most of the time I sent the seeds to labs to be flasked. A lot of the seeds are now going to head overseas. Seed pods vary in the time it takes to ripen. From 3 months to over a year. It depends on the plant. You just have to watch closely. If I flask again soon I will do a video. I can also do a video on what will be needed.

Hello brad just a question here, How viable would it be to cross a normal size phal and a mini phal?
@aslinnortnic146711 жыл бұрын
I'm still confused. The receiving flower, do I have to remove the pollen from it then add the new cross pollen? and one last question; do I pollinate just one flower or do I have to pollinate all? does that mean next blooming season they will be crossed? thanks for your prompt reply.

I still have no idea what parts of the orchid to work on, there are some great close up shots of the back of your thumb and the underside of the petal. I need to find another tutorial or a good book where I can see what part is what,

Assuming you are not trying to create a cross, why can't the pollen be applied to the same flower? Can it be applied to a different flower on the same plant?
@michelleespino98145 жыл бұрын
Many plants have chemical incompatibility barriers. If the plant realizes that proteins and hence genes (because genes code for proteins) from pollen grain match those of the style than fertilization will be blocked. This is to ensure genetic diversity. In many cases, even close relatives will be blocked. And FYI different flowers of the same plant are still the same organism... just like you may have two ovaries or testes but they are both you.

Hi! Brad I hv pollinated my orchid... Now how do I make young plants and after how many days are the seed ready??
@BradsGreenhouse11 жыл бұрын
You can leave the polen in the one. It will still polinate normally.

Myself or a friend can flask mine here in Canada. I am now sending seeds to Australia to a friend that way as well. I would think you could find a online Flasking lab... But I'm not sure for sure.

Hi Brad! I sometime ago made an epic fail, when I cut the green seed pod of a phal and inside was just green wet flesh and no seeds, so epic fail :P. This time I waited for the seed pod to mature, witch means I waited til the pod turned yellow and shrivelled. I carefully and with accurate sterilization with vodka (I couldn't get any alcohol, because in drugs store the cashier could sell me any, because I am only 16 yo), I sterilized the flasks, the seeds pod, and my all tools and the glass board, on witch I proceeded pod's "anatomy". I opened the mature pod (it was 6 months old, because I polinated the flower in september 1st) and what was inside really confused me - the pod was mature but inside was just cotton-like thing and no dust-like seeds. Well, I carefully trasfered the cotton-thing into flasks, and now I am curious, were the seeds so small that they were invisible, or did I just made an "epic fail" again? Please, can you tell me, why there was only cotton like thing and no dusty seeds? Thanks :) P.S. If I just made an epic fail again, I will gonna be so, so mad. . .

Vytautas Poška the fluff is normal, the seeds are very small, some may have fallen out but im sure there were some in the pod.

do I have to remove the existing (polen that belong to the flower itself) polen when I polinate the flower with the polen from other flower ?: if i leave the polen of the flower untouch, and polinate it with the polen of another flower what will happen ?

@OneJHWH11 жыл бұрын
you should make a video of how to plant the seeds
@glenerickson358 Жыл бұрын
You'll have to use regular potting mix for seed germination. If you repot a store bought orchid, you'll see a small cylinder of potting mix soil under main part of orchid that they used for young plants to get started in.

I end up sending most of my pods away to get flasked. Google "orchid Flasking " and it will give you an idea of the steps.

When you cross-pollinate two different color orchids, what's the outcome? Is it like crossing two different breed dogs, you'll get a total mix of those two?
@jaceware88086 жыл бұрын
correct. It is best to cross pollinate from the same type of orchid if you want the characteristics to stay the same.
@glenerickson358 Жыл бұрын
Probably best to cross pollinate orchids with same color pattern on flowers.
