Succulents produce flowers. The flowers produce seeds. But first, they have to be pollinated to produce seeds. When succulents are flowering, is also the perfect time to create your own succulent hybrid. Echeveria agavoides Romeo is a beautiful plant that I want to hybridized with an Echeveria Bloody Maria.

I love that you’re doing this step-by-step with us! Is there a timeframe that you have to wait to take the seeds out of the pods? I pollinated my blue sky and my topsy-turvy and I have the dried flowers in a tray I have not tried to extract seeds yet. Do I have to extract the seeds right away?

I also asked the question if my string of watermelons could potentially have seeds in the fluffy part of the bloom because I'm not sure how to know like it was easier to know on my string of hearts because they came directly from the seed pod, but I'm not sure what I'm doing with the watermelons. My point of all of that was I asked it on another one of your videos and I should have waited till I found this one lol
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK

The fluffy bit is a dispersal mechanism of the plant. The wind will blow and scatter the seeds located at the tip of the fluffy bit. I usually spread them in the soil and water them or a light sprinkling of soil on top also helps to keep them down.

Loved the video. I'd like to know if there is a criteria in choosing the plants to cross pollinate. And I suppose there's no limit to the genre ( Graptoveria x echeveria or whatever). Thank you. Liz! Oh and another question, my flower buds always carry tons of black aphids. how do you maintain them aphids-free?

With the flowers having both pistil and stamen would it be better to isolate the pistil by removing the stamen in order to ensure that your only fertilizing the plant with the intended pollen and avoid self pollinating while trying to breed the two specific plants?
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Жыл бұрын
I mainly cross pollinate to fertilized the seed pod. Most of the plants I have are either hybrids or tissue cultured plants and will produce many variations no matter how stringent the procedures.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Ah that makes sense. Sorry if my comment seemed rude or anything. Great video and there’s not enough information out there for actual breeding of succulents rather than propagating clones. Great video and appreciate you taking the time to spread awesome information!

Hi Liz, do you cross pollinate just to obtain a new hybrid or because seeds can’t grow on their own without this process? Secondly, how you can tell which one is the recipient? Or simply you choose any 2 you like to cross pollinate together? Thank you in advance!!
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 2 жыл бұрын
They need to be pollinated to have seeds. As explained in this video. The pollen is the male(Bloody Maria). The female(Romeo) is the recipient. I'm hoping to get a black Romeo with spots.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I didn’t know in the first place that they can’t have seeds if they’re not pollinated. It seems long process to grow the seeds under light or warm place. Anyway I hope that you will get what you’re after. Thanks again!

Hi, if you’re pollinating the same plant and not cross breeding, do you just stick that brush into the other flowers? And then wait for the flower to close which means it’s fertilized if I’m understanding correctly? Thanks!
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 2 ай бұрын
Yes, exactly. Wrapping the whole flower stalk with lace or sheer materials also prevent contamination from other pollen.

Hi miss Liz quick question lang po I have a purple polidonis eceveria and another one thats dark green in color I just dont happen to know the name but I have tries propagating it for so many times it even came to a point that one of them died maybecause I took too much of the leaves but Im reall have a hard time propagating it with leaves. Can you give me some tips as I tried drying them and just placing the on paper towels on top of the soil and even tried water propagation non of these worked...
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 2 жыл бұрын
Most of my newly bought young plants, I try to avoid removing the leaves to propagate. I wait till they get a bit more mature. Depending on the pulidonis hybrid, some of them can take forever to grow from leaf or even pup up. I haven't has a chance to propagated pulidonis from a leaf yet. Pulidonis can grow babies quite easily, so I prefer to take the babies to propagate rather that leaves.

So can you cross pollinate or whatever this process is called, with any blooms that are opened on any type of succulent? Or do they have to have something specific about them that makes it work? I feel like I'm missing something here that you said that I'm not understanding cuz it is hard for me to understand things sometimes but now I'm going to be researching like crazy because.
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Жыл бұрын
The bees and insects usually do this, but you can pollinate (DIY) the blooms with itself or another plant that's also flowering/blooming at the same time.
