A very beautiful and interesting collection, well presented. Years ago, I bought a packet of mixed Echeveria seed and successfully raised some fine coloured varieties - these plants I left behind when I moved house, the buyer very keen to keep them. In recent years, I bought another Echeveria with a lovely blue/white bloom and it spends all summer outdoors in the ground - in 'Scotland.' I prepared the ground before planting with lots of charcoal pieces and gravel sized stones, choosing a sheltered, sunny spot with a slight dappled shade during the noon day sun. The plant (now divided into several) copes very well with our high rainfall, detached leaves happily rooting where they fall on the ground. I think it helps that the plants live at the foot of a young Larch tree that is very thirsty and dries out the whole border. This year, because of our hot, sunny Spring weather - 2 plants have put forth flower spikes (and are presently very close to blooming). I dig them up when it starts to cool down in Autumn, keeping an eye on weather news so they are brought indoors before there is any chance of frost. They spend the winter months potted up in a bright unheated porch, only watered very rarely, the leaves that rooted during the summer quickly growing into rosettes for the next Spring planting. I love the fact that they bring such a different aspect to my otherwise very lush, green garden. I think after seeing this I should expand on my collection again and bring in some new colours and shapes. I love the bumpy varieties - never seen those before!

Hello Debbi, amazing what gardeners can do and your story is an inspiration. We are members of the Scottish Rock Garden Club and what the members grow makes us feel humble. (although not all of them are Scotland) Your soil preparation sound ideal, if we were in Scotland, we would be doing a video on your efforts...... All the best and stay safe.

One note at 6:00 on crests… while it’s true that they’re a natural “fluke”, of sorts, and just happen for reasons beyond our understanding, there are ways to get them yourself. Of course, the first way-and one that many may not want to risk with their existing plants-is by slicing a portion from an existing crest, thus creating a new cutting, while giving a newer shape to the mother crested plant. That’s been one successful method for me…rooting hormone is useful here, by the way. The other (surprising) method is by simply taking leaf cuttings and arranging them, misting, letting them develop. Take leaves from non-crested, normal plants. I did a trayful of various leaf cuttings, and i was shocked at how many of the new baby plants actually formed into crests! So there must be some truth to the theory that trauma or accidents can cause cresting, i.e., removing a leaf from the plant, forcing it to root on its own... this must be “traumatic” in a sense, or enough to trigger cresting. This can also trigger variegation as well, in certain plants, though that can also be caused by bacteria, fungus, etc. But yea, just take leaf cuttings, lay them on dry substrate, sand, moss, whatever, and watch. Primarily, I’ve seen this with Sedum, Echeveria, Graptopetalum, and Pachyphytum. Also works with their intergeneric crosses (Sedeveria, Pachyveria, Pachysedum, Graptoveria, Graptosedum, Graptophytum). Even the tiniest groundcover trays of sedums I’ve purchased have done this. Simply prune or shear those, and crests appear.

OH MY GOD!!!!! I absolutely LOVED this video!!!! It was wonderful seeing your “old”/“prized” Echeveria and the awesome pots for them! I’ve been collecting rare Echeveria and it’s almost as hard to find the perfect pot for them as it is to find the plant! Pots can also be super expensive! I get most of mine from Iker Bonsai Pots. I’ve convinced Chuck Iker to make low-profile pots with lots of small drainage holes since Echeveria have a shallow root system!
@johnnyAGardening4 жыл бұрын
Hello McKenzie, you make some good points, well made attractive pots suited to succulents are difficult to find. Many pots have very small drainage holes, which are just not suited. If you check out some of the Japanese pots the holes are really large. I have just had a look at Chuck Ikers Pots, they are really nice looking pots.... some of the best I have seen....

Hello Barbara, as a genus Echeveria are one of the most popular of all of the succulents. Agavoides types are indeed amazing. Some Echeveria cultivars such as Romeo, Cante and a lot of the elegans types are classics.... and yes when the put on colour, they look great. Thanks for watching.
