Does the position of my thumbs matter at all? My mom is concerned because I don't grip the wheel with my thumbs much at all but I didn't know if that really matters or if it's something they will notice when I take my test?
@smartdrivetest

Hi Erin - thank you for your comment and query. No, you don't have to wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel. So long as you demonstrate that you have control of the steering wheel, the position of your thumbs is not going to factor into your test score. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Get a big balloon or a pillow and put it on your steering wheel. Whether you are at 10-2, 9-3, or 8-4 it will be clear of your arms, so whoever came up with the arm-breaking theory was just making that up... not to mention that basing your hand position on the fear that an airbag will injure your arms is ludicrous. The 10-2 position is optimal for city driving, since you're constantly turning corners and the hand over hand method is the most efficient and precise. This remains true even in situations that call for quick steering. That being said, I was pretty impressed by some Brits who could shuffle steer very quickly in a simulated emergency. On the highway, the 9-3 position is also acceptable, since higher speeds necessitate less steering input to avoid an obstacle, and 9-3 allows a slightly greater range while keeping contact with the wheel.

If you can't remember the speed you're in just look at the road conditions. Is there a center divide? Are there side streets? Are there house drives directly leading to the street? Is there 2 way traffic? How many lanes are on the street? Is there street lighting? Match these conditions to the speeds and remember what they are.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Marion Lewis - Thank you for your comment. That technique doesn't always work. It one place the speed is going to be 30mph and in another identical situation, the speed with be 40mph. The only way to be sure of the speed is the posted speed limit sign. All the best, Cheers Rick

Driving correctly and according to the law is not only required for the driving test they are requirements for the life of your driving. Including stopping at stop signs, not keep rolling because you did get there first and obeying speed signs.

Smart Drive Test All steering wheels on cars should have air bags, if it doesn't have one it's because the car is surely modified in some way, not sure what advantages are there to air bagless wheels on a modified car, race cars like Nascar is fine but for cars on the road they should have them. The hand position is the same, normally only the center cover pops out when the bag is deloyed so you shouldn't get hurt.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kiraro The Kitsune - Thank you for your response. You were on-board with what I was thinking - thus the car isn't modified. Yes, some driving manuals advocate "8 & 4" hand positions for steering wheels with airbags, but I'm not on-board with that thinking. And you're correct about race cars: most of these have roll cages, 5-point seat belts, and the driver is wearing a helmet. And these safety features make an airbag redundant. All the best my friend, Cheers Rick
@kirara4953

Smart Drive Test the four and eight position seems uncomfortable, I've seen people using it on buses and semi trucks because the steering wheel is much bigger so it makes sense since the 3 and 9, and 2 and 10 positions will require you to stretch your arms abnormally or get too close to the wheel, being too close can suffocate you if the bag deploys so 4 and 8 on a big wheel makes sense, but wheels on cars are mostly the same size, so 4 and 8 is just for lazy driving on a slow cruise I guess.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm not an advocate of the 8 & 4. It's simple physics that you have less control of the vehicle. But as you point out, it makes more sense on the bigger vehicles. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Rick! At 1:15, there's an addendum to always keep the hands on the outside of the wheel. Could you explain in more detail? Thanks!
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lawton C - Thank you for your query. The reason for keeping your thumbs on the outside of the wheels is so that you don't get your thumbs jammed in the spokes of the steering wheel if it somehow spins back into place. It was more risky before power steering, but is still a good practice my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
@marionlewis4703
@marionlewis4703 6 жыл бұрын
Place your hand at 9 and 3 that way should you need to swerve your hands can turn the wheel better and you know when the wheel is centered again. I also use the matching hands position when turning it is as fast as any if you keep on turning. The thumbs should be on the front of the steering wheel not tucked around the wheel. You have a better grip that way. Never take you hands from the wheel for hand gestures to your passengers when talking.

Hi Nikétás Vlahosz - Thank you for your comment and great insight. Without seeing you, I suspect you're looking down at the shifter when you're shifting. And remember, the car is going to go where you're looking. So what I suspect you have to do is go to a parking lot or other area where there isn't any traffic and practice shifting the car while keeping your gaze out the front window. Revisit this video for the shifting pattern of the car - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4iVgmqift2liNE If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank - thank you for your comment and query. If you're comfortable with 9 & 3, then use that. And I don't agree with hand-over-hand to bring the steering wheel back because it will come back on it's own naturally. At the end of the turn, it may need a bit of help, but that working the steering wheel back is left over from the days before power steering. As long as you keep your palms in contact with the steering wheel, you'll be fine. Now, say all that, I would suggest that you follow the instructions of your driving instructor. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

If you need to return a hand to the wheel it takes those few mini moments and you have travelled several feet in an emergency, too late, you in an accident that could have been prevented by just putting the hand on the wheel where they should have been in the first place. .

Hand over hand is from the days when car steering wheels had to be turned 3x for a 90 degree turn... in other words, cars were boats. I find all these rules don't apply anymore, and never really did back then either. Nobody that is a competent driver drives like this.

How far do you move the steering wheel? My first class I was completely lost with how far I had to turn the steering wheel on different types of turns.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 8 жыл бұрын
Hi TGSHokuto - thanks for your question. For your first lessons, I would suggest you work in an area that is NOT in traffic. Parking lots or other closed circuit training areas work best. In a parking lot, you can work with the primary controls: the steering wheel; the brake; and the accelerator - and get comfortable with these. Most passenger vehicle steering wheels move 11/2 turns in either direction. During normal driving 1/4 turn for curves. Right hand turns will require 1 full turn of the steering wheel, give or take; and left hand turns will 3/4 turn of the steering wheel. What may help more than know how far to turn the steering wheel is look in the direction that you want the vehicle to go - the steering wheel and turning should then take care of itself.

Hi ItsEpicKills2 - Thank you for your comment and query. Most of the time hand-over-hand and allowing the wheel to return through your fingers are acceptable in CA, but I counsel you to take a practice driving test with a local driving school. That driving instructor can give you the specific information that you need to be successful on a road test. He or she can also evaluate your other skills and give you feedback so you're fully ready. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Sanchez Bashir - thank you for your comment and query. First, breath - that will cause you body to relax. And next, ensure that you have good space management - if you're not near other vehicles and road users, there is a much less chance of crashing. And if you're not taking driving lessons, I might suggest one or two lessons with an instructor. Look for a driving instructor that works with Seniors - they are the best at working with people that have some anxiety about driving. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi KwamZ - Fifa 18 - Thank you for your comment and query. If you have a disability that prevents you from using both hands, you probably need to consult a medical doctor. S/he will provide you with a note, and you would be able to fit your vehicle with a spinner knob. You might have to take a couple of driving lessons with a specialist, but it should be fairly straight forward. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. @smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Laurie - sorry to hear about your daughter’s unsuccessful attempt. When allowing the wheel to correct, the palms must remain in contact with the steering wheel. I always council to take a mock road test because some driving centres require that the driver manipulate the steering wheel back. A driving instructor can provide that information. If there’s anything further we can do drop us a note. Always happy to help, Cheers Rick

Smart Drive Test I don’t watch racing, so I wouldn’t know the first thing about what they do. But I feel I have a lot more control over the vehicle and can respond much faster if I keep a hand on the shifter
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cory Scott - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your response. Race car drivers keep both hands on the wheel and only move their hand when shifting. After shifting, they immediately move their hand back to the steering wheel. However, for everyday driving, I'm not advocating both hands on the wheel, unless you're preparing for a road test. All the best, Cheers Rick
