As one of the primary controls, the steering wheel must be controlled correctly for a road test. Watch the video! Get PASS ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-r... SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
#steeringwheelcontrol #smartdrivetest #passfirsttime
When first learning to drive, go to a secluded parking lot or other closed circuit area where there is little or no traffic. Here, practice turning the vehicle. By doing this technique you can become familiar with the response of the steering wheel, which is one of the vehicle's primary controls.
There are two techniques for manipulating the steering wheel:
1) Hand-over-hand, which is the preferred method in North America and other parts of the world.
2) Hand-to-hand, which is the preferred method for a road test in the U.K., Europe, parts of Australia and other parts of the world.
The most accepted method for working the steering wheel is hand-over-hand because it moves more of the steering wheel, therefore, turning faster.
After completing the turn, you do not have to manipulate the steering wheel back; simply open your fingers (keeping your palms in contact with the steering wheel) and allow the steering wheel to spin back to the straight position. You may have to manipulate the steering wheel to bring it to the correct position, but that is often a minor correction.
Again, practice, practice, practice working the steering wheel for the purposes of a driving test.
If you're driving a manual transmission, move the steering wheel to a static position on the turn, hold with the hand that’s not shifting and then shift the gear.
Good luck on your road test!

Sadly, we don’t have a driving school where I live (Saipan). The only teachers are parents or relatives. Because of that, I am scared to drive because there wasn’t a professional teaching me. I am 32, and I never got a driving license nor have I ever been confident enough to drive until recently. Your videos are very helpful, especially for those like me who are afraid to drive.

Hi Adnan Ahmed Malik - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome. You can't be failed for using hand-to-hand, but you want to try and do as many techniques and manoeuvres in the way that the examiner expects them. In other words, if you test centre uses hand-over-hand you want to try and do that just to "go with the flow" so to speak. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. I am currently taking my son out to drive in preparation for his road test 2 months from now. He took driving instructions here in Ontario, Canada; where the instructor taught him hand over hand. Well, he finds it too tricky to maneuver using hand over hand, and his driving instruction through Young Drivers has ended. Now, I go out driving with him, and I didn’t learn to drive using hand over hand. I find it really difficult to turn using this technique. Guess I need to teach myself it ; (your video helps, thank you!); so I can help him with it!

Thank you. I was taught hand over hand . The tighter the turn the further over you reach over with the hand crossing over to the opposite side of the curb. I do have a question though. I drive manual and there are a lot of long straight lonely roads where I live. When driving in a straight line for a while, how should my hands be positioned? I have a habit of keeping one hand at 8 o'clock and the other on the arm rest, but I get wrist trouble on my left. I'm trying to see if it's me or the car.

Hey Rick (me again) in Australia we do push-pull (hand-to-hand) for light vehicles because we don't want to have our arms between the airbag in the centre of the steering wheel and our face if there's a frontal collision when turning across traffic etc.

You are doing a great service, sir. Thank you. I had a question specifically about steering. I am finding that I have no trouble doing a left turn from, say, an intersection. However, right turns, especially after having come to a total stop at a stop sign, is proving still a bit of a problem for me. I am finding that when making a right turn, I am not accustomed to doing a proper hand-over-hand turn. So, when turning right, do you normally push with your left hand first or pull down with your right hand first?
@smartdrivetest

Hi Ravikant Rai - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your question. I believe the reason you're having difficulty is because you're doing hand-to-hand rather than hand-over-hand. You'll find that hand-over-hand is faster than the other method. All the best, Cheers Rick

@@smartdrivetest No problem, thank you very much for responding. I have gotten better since and do hand over hand now. The only issue I face now is when i am turning, even on wider roads, i look at other drivers in the rear view mirror and feel the need to keep my speed a little higher, same as others around me, and I end up sometimes not doing a smooth enough turn. Fortunately this is not always the case. I noticed this happens when i don't have to stop on a left turn lane at an intersection. Because there is a green light and ample space between oncoming traffic and myself.

I live in Sweden and ive been taught the hand to hand method. The instructor said that hand over hand steering is not safe because your arms can break if you have them infront of the airbag if it goes off. If you have a watch on it can hit you in the head and possibly kill you.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 3 жыл бұрын
That was once true. Air bag tech works differently now and is less violent. As well, when these deploy is more complicated due to advances in sensors. So it’s unlikely that you’re going to have any injuries owing to air bag deployment. But go with that for your test. After you get your license you can figure out what works for you. Just curious, I'm going for my g1 exit test in june. When i turn am I allowed to have one hand kind of off the steering wheel? Or must there be constant double handed touch?(im ontario so i dont know if there would be a difference) I kind of ghost the hand that isnt taking the turn over the wheel while keeping light contact for example having the wheel run against my palm at the base of my fingers. I dont want to fail and ive been practising going around blocks,taking turns checking my mirrors and blind spots ect. I feel good and comfortable with it i just want to make sure i dont mess up by having incorrect hand positions or doing something wrong. The ontario book says while driving to keep my hands at 3 and 9 if that helps any, many thanks if ypu can offer any help!

Above that, why on earth would you _need_ to apply so much lock in a hurry - unless you're trying to roll the vehicle?! I've always used push-pull, because my hands get in a tangle when I try to cross hands! I've never had any problem with this method, even in the tightest spots. Controlling the steering wheel is difficult for me. I have had a couple of lessons so far. I have no experience with cars (I might as well be piloting a plane) and my instructors speak to me as if I should know the right amount of control to have with a steering wheel this early on, particularly when it comes to turns and parking and they aren't particularly helpful with only letting me practice for wheel control (and getting comfortable with the proper amount of pressure to apply to the pedals). I can't feel when the car is straight or not (with parallel parking). I guess it is just going to take practice, but I worry that they are only teaching to pass the test rather than ensuring I truly understand and feel comfortable with how to maneuver the car. All my lessons have been very early in the morning when there are very few cars on the road because I just don't feel confident in controlling the wheel enough. I live in NYC by the way and I learn in a very specific way and the way they teach is not really conducive to the way I typically learn. I don't really have drivers in my life to let me practice so I can only rely on these professional schools and even when telling them that I am really a novice and am not comfortable with the workings of the car, they still just put me on the road and expect me to understand how to control the car in a mediocre way in actual traffic. Then they tell me rules while I am trying to focus on controlling the wheel without practice and they think I am retaining what they are saying when I am focusing on the basics that I should have been learning and feeling comfortable with beforehand. It's very difficult for me. I feel like it will take me forever and much, much money before I even remotely feel comfortable taking my road test. It's very aggravating. Thank you for these videos. They do help me to visualize in my mind before my actual lessons.

It takes practice to get use to the car and getting the grip for the steering wheel. Practice is key with the steering wheel, my advice is that go out with your parents or instructor early morning at around 7 or 8am where there is no traffic out on the road and you can go nice slow and get a feel for the wheel, OR go to a big mall parking lot and due some turns with the car and see how the car reacts to it! You will do just fine, and keep up the hard work!

The method is called 'pull-push' because it is initiated by a pull. It is good practice to precipitate the turn by moving your hand to the top of the steering wheel which allows the initial input to be smoother and longer, and enables momentum to be gained before the hands switch at the bottom. This method requires anticipation. Usually, if initiated from the 10-2 or 9-3 position, the input will be jerky and very slow. While I think pull-push is quick enough for normal road usage if executed properly, the major disadvantage is that you lose your ability to gauge the amount of steering being applied. It's not a terrible method but rotational steering is probably better for most people.

In Connecticut, I have to do the hand-over-hand to turn the wheel and to straighten it back using that same method. :(

Hi FlipnotePikachu - thank you for your comment. I'm not sure why driving instructors do that - manipulating the steering wheel back is so antiquated. Still, follow the techniques given by your instructor so you can pass your road test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Interestingly in Colorado, apparently the DMV doesn't give license tests anymore; rather I would have to get my license test form a third party driving school.
