You’re welcome. Oddly, I grew up within a few miles of Cranston and we went to rival High Schools...he’s a year older. But I think I have a few inches and about 50lbs on him. 😊

Hey James! Great video. The "median" trick is a lifesaver. Was wondering though, how do you go about re-inserting the hue on top of the b+w posterized image? I could easily just duplicate the original image and set it to color mode, but that wouldn't follow the posterized image very cleanly. Any tips would be much appreciated!

Hello, excellent vid and explanation/suggestions! I had heard of this before but didn’t really understand how to do it well so thank you! I was wondering, have you heard of the app Procreate for the iPad? Do you or have you heard of any ways to create this effect on the app? I’ve been looking and doing research on this but I can’t find any just for B&W images
@JamesCrandallPainting3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sophie! I don’t have a stylus-capable iPad (and I’m still using a Cintiq screen with my desktop Mac) so I have no experience with Procreate, sorry.

Notan has a history beyond being a “hipster term.” Nōtan is a Japanese term that means ‘light and dark harmony/balance.’
@JamesCrandallPainting5 ай бұрын
My Japanese artist friend tells me that this word is never used in this context in Japan, and that it is misappropriation as used among arty English speakers. I went to Art college in the 1970-1980s (along with several Japanese students) and never heard this word until perhaps the 2000s. That’s why I suggest this usage is a modern invention.

hipster term for two values... LOL! Lets try, Japanese term for meaning, the design of light and dark shapes against each other.
@JamesCrandallPainting Жыл бұрын
Somehow I got throughout several years of art education and some 20 years as a professional illustrator without hearing the word. It’s just “graphic design” in English, no cultural appropriation is required.

I’m having trouble posterizing a black person. Any ideas
@JamesCrandallPainting2 жыл бұрын
Unless the photo is badly underexposed, there will be value changes there. Try adjusting the photo brighter before the posterizing step.
