In europe (well at least in some places) we quite often use these types of containers as cache pots and have the nursery pot inside it. We get a pretty pot but we also can easily check the roots. Have you ever tried this method? (Sorry I'm new so maybe you have). Is there any reason this isn't as common or popular in the US?

I've been watching you since year 1, and ever since you've been using planters with no drainage, I've been thinking. Originally I thought, "I'm glad it's working for her, but it couldn't be me". But post-pandemic, I have a lot less time for my plants. Many have died from my underwatering and I think this care tip might be the one I need. I've been denying it too long, time to try it! Thanks Harli!

Most of my plants are in no drainage and I love it. I like to put a little leca at the bottom with charcoal so there can be a little water reservoir rather than soggy substrate to the bottom.. I put a thin layer of moss on top of it to keep the substrate from falling in. Like a little parfait ❤

I remember when you were pregnant with him and later when he was tiny. Time flies ! I’m happy to get back to your videos and still find them interesting and educative❤ When i started keeping more and more plants, the internet always made me feel kind of guilty for all the times i used a no drainage planter.. and it’s true that i used to be an overwatered so it may have killed some. But i feel like it’s a relationship ! They tell us what they like or not so we can adjust. I love my no drainage planters (My mom who used to kill everything has THRIVING succulents and cacti ALL in no drainage planters😂 so you never know 😂)

Plants that people would never expect to like semi-hydro, often end up loving it, and there are tons of plants that live in certain conditions in nature that semi-hydro is able to mimic more easily. I never understood the hate that no drainage and semi-hydro both get! It doesn't hurt anyone to try new things with growing houseplants 😊 Thank you for covering the no-drainage topic and adding to the positivity surrounding it :)

I have many different plants/ mediums. I do have a couple of hoya's in no drainage pots. That being said, they are in terra cotta pots, just no holes. So, it's pretty breathable to begin with. I love no drainage for aroids and succulents - but for the aroids I'm not ready to give up seeing the roots yet so I use glass vases for them. To keep the algae at bay, I do a reservoir layer of fluval stratum and mix that and charcoal in my tree fern fiber, chunky perlite, and bark mix. It's just like yours but I use tree fern instead of coco coir. Tree fern is near impossible to compact but stays moist; I love it! The Alocasia get Pon - they're just happier in it. Succulents also get Pon but they don't have a reservoir - they have enough Pon to keep from toppling. Thanks for another great video! Your son is adorable! 💚

I’m so glad it works for you! I prefer to catch the water in a tray & let my plants soak up what they need for 10 or 15 minutes. It makes me feel good & with my clear pots, I can see the moisture and new root growth. Watering is a ritual and I take a day to just relax in between plants.

I bought 5 succulents last year for the first time. One of them I think is called chalk sticks? And wanted it in a cute pot with no hole so I put a layer of those small pebbly rocks used to decorate tops of succulents in the bottom of the pot. Then I measured how much water would just cover the rocks which was 1/4 cup. Then I drained the water out and planted the succulent using 1/2 cactus mix, 1/4 perlite and 1/4 of those same tiny rocks. When I water every 2 weeks I only put in the amount of water that covered the rocks which was 1/4 cup in my case. It's done the best of all those succulents. They are all in the same South window in my MN home. Now that it's Fall/Winter I'm using a grow bulb too. Hope that helps so you can experiment😊 I think the brave plant people are the ones who grow your plants in no drainage.😊
