Potty training our Italian puppy in an apartment was... difficult. Basically took 9 months of going outside every 3 hours or less. We are first time dog owners, so it probably took longer than if we actually knew what we were doing. Anything longer and we got pee and poo indoors. Now he only has accidents, like when he is feed the wrong treats or retaliates for any perceived slights or insults 😅

@@DiamondDogTraining I asked this question ''Are Iggies hard to housetrain?'' on one of your other vids {The snow boots one}..and googled, and found this vid. I have a Whippet who was a right little '' Wee/Poo monster!''... I trained her exactly the same way as my past dogs, but she just took soooo much longer than the others. Using a ''Cue word'' and loads of praise...and when an errant poo or wee was discovered, I'd just clean up without saying anything. {and used a urine destroyer cleanser} Oddly, her siblings were the same! I used to be really smug about house training dogs, and thought I had it down to a tee. Wiglet taught me differently. I'd say it took 8 months for her to be 100% guaranteed housetrained. Endless patience is required, for sure :)

@@Oakleaf700 yes, so much patience . But it is worth it. My girls are using the pee pads today because it is raining. We were out this morning before it rained. Both pee pads and outside is the best of both worlds . Thank you. Joyce

I potty trained my late Italian greyhound, Rocko. Sure, he had occasional accidents on long days alone, but he did his business outside for the most part. I'd even shovel a path for him in the snow and he'd do his thing no problems.

Absolutely no problem, admittedly ,we have direct access to the garden, but at between 5/6 months we have no accidents in the house.

That is great. Consistency always works. And access to the garden makes it much easier than going down an elevator to get outside. But you can always pad train and be consistent. Same idea. Thank you . Joyce

This is really great advice. I was giving my iggie puppy way too much space. She was running behind furniture to pee or running to a seldom used room to pee, and I didn't realize what she was doing at first. She is an adult now and is much better than she was, but I still have to be very vigilant with her to prevent accidents. I agree that they still need to have a pee pad inside just in case they need to go and you can't get them outside quickly enough. She is finally able to go outside most of the time, but when we leave her at home, she needs a pee pad in the kitchen to go pee.

I have been losing my mind trying to get my new girl to stop going everywhere in my apartment. This video reminded me that I had a pen that I used for my older boy that I could make into an area with her crate. I just need to find a cover because she is a climber and a jumper. I'm convinced she's part kangaroo! Everything I have been reading has been telling me to NOT use pee pads, but with the fact that I cannot keep an eye on her 24/7, and my place is carpeted, I think I'm going to go ahead and start using them anyway. She's will go pee outside when I take her, but has yet to learn how to tell me she needs to go. I want to give her play time with her brother, but I guess when they do that, I should be supervising it for about 10-20 minutes. Side note: Older boy is like 98% potty trained, he will sit and stare at me when he needs to go,. We do have some potty bells that he will use from time to time, but, on ocassion, he just uses them when he wants to just go outside and hang out i.e. not potty. 😖 I don't remember how long it took him to stop peeing in the place. The only accidents he has now are #2s overnight, and he tends to do then on tiled areas (I'd prefer the bathroom, so I gate off the kitchen at night). Not quite sure what to do to get him to stop, but I kinda just tolerate it since it's in an area that is easy to clean up. Thanks for the tips! It's actually helpful to get advice from an owner of the breed. Edit: I did the pen set up near the bed last night and she didn't disturb me once all night and went to the bathroom on the pee pads. I forgot what a full night sleep is like. 😅

We just got a new puppy (Female) about 5 weeks ago and potty training has been a NIGHTMARE. Our Vet recommended Crate Training and gave us a list of things to do to accomplish this task. We watch and recognize the signs when she has to use the bathroom and immediately scoop her up and take her outside, the problem there is that we take her to the area we want to use for her potty training and she refuses to go. We ignore her and let her roam a little but she still wont go. We would go inside sometimes after about 45 minutes then she will immediately squat and go inside the house. We go outside with her and our older Iggy for play time and they will wrestle and have a good time. She will give signs that she has to go. She will actually whine but she refuses to go outside. When we get inside, she immediately squats. Shes doing everything backwards. We've put out pee pads but all she does is shred them.

What surface did your puppy pee on at the breeder. Maybe you can use that to get her started outside. Was it grass pee pads or something else. Try some of these things. Take a soiled pee pad outside when you take her out to pee., choose an area 10-15 feet and walk her back and forth on a harness and leash . If she goes potty, give treat and tons of praise. If she does not pee, take her back inside and attach leash to your belt. Keep her close to you for 20 minutes and then take her back outside. Keep repeating until she pees. Then give her playtime with you and your other IG. Keep her area small in the house. Puppy play pen and lots of gates to prevent her wandering away and peeing. Give me more information and I can offer more advice. Sorry it took so long to respond. thank you. Joyce

@DiamondDogTraining
@DiamondDogTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. We are a 6 month system. From April to October, we always reward for going potty outside with the better treat. Also when the weather is bad, reward with the best treats for using potty pads indoors. From October to April, we reward with the yummy treat for using potty pads indoors. The girls understand when to go potty outside in the nice weather because that gets them the better treat. But I always reward every time my girls go potty on the pee pads even in good weather. The treat is not as good. I never want them to have a accident on the floor. This way they always use the potty pads or decide to ask me to go outside to potty because the treat is better for outside in the summer. I am ok with my girls using potty pads inside in nice weather. They are 99.9% potty trained to use potty pads. The only accidents they have is when they start to poop and walk off the pads. That happens very rarely. They are very good. Thank you for your comment. Hope this answers your question. Joyce

I have a 15 year old Italian Greyhound my very 1st dog got her as a puppy and if It wasn’t for my mother watching her while I was at work I don’t know what I would have done. She uses pee pads and goes outside, the best of both worlds in my opinion, if you can’t be home they use the pee pad, works out great. Also if you live where winters are cold and snowy Iggys generally will not go outside. Since mine has gotten older she prefers the pee pad in the winter.

Chris hi! New Iggy puppy owner and sounds like we live in similar circumstance (but I am able to work from home) Asking for any thoughts / comment - I have the ‘added challenge’ of living in a 2nd floor walk up condo - I plan to be taking her outside continually and no doubt will also be having indoor potty space - just wondering if your own experience may help me understand if the added ‘barrier’ of getting downstairs may make outdoor training close to ‘impossible?’

Yeah that can be an issue Iggys aren’t great for holding it. Mine was never great at letting me know she had to go potty. Still doesn’t let me know. If I lived up a flight of stairs I would be in trouble with bad knee issues. I hope it works out for you. My “Bella”will be 17 soon!

@@chrisklingman2283 thanks! Yes stairs - ugh. I plan on getting plenty of exercise taking her in and out - eventually may just look to move to a first floor condo as well as spend winters or move to year round warmer climate. I’m an OT (kind of ‘close’ to a PT in some ways) - so yea - knees and aging ; I’ve been working that into the timeframe of how long and how able to live this way - or just make life easier and step right outside.

Hi! Thank you for doing this Video, so helpful! I was just wondering, you always hear that your puppy should be getting used to the outside world as young as possible, outside stimuli like other people in shops, other animals in dog zones and so on. Your method sounds like you'd have to be at home or at least around the house basically the whole time. How do you arrange this way of pottytraining with attending a puppy course for example? Thanks a lot! Nina

Hi Nina, Yes, puppies need to be socialized to many people. Every puppy should go to a puppy class. When I taught puppy classes, i always had potty pads in the room for the puppies who were pad trained. We always took potty breaks during the hour class. They could use the potty pads during the break or the owner could take them to the potty area outside. Also take your puppy with you so many people can meet and pet your puppy. Thank you for the comment. Joyce

Hi Joyce, help!? New Iggy mom - please help with question? she’ll be with me 2 weeks from now - I’m watching videos and getting ready - but live in 2nd floor walk up condo outside Chicago - very doggie friendly neighborhood for walks and play - but I’m of course concerned about potty training - Want to take her out to pee and I’m devoted to training (know the obvious challenges of stairs involved and no ‘instant ez open door to instant grass (tho grass is right outside condo entry) - Do you think ‘puppy pad’ training WITH repetitive going outside and rewards for both make them confused about what they ‘should’ be doing?

Hi Wendy, Congratulations! You must be so excited. how old will your puppy be when you get her in 2 weeks. she may not be able to go outside and be around dogs if she has not had all of her vaccinations. In that case you can use pee pads or real grass inside until she is old enough to be in the grass where other dogs walk. My dogs use pee pads in the bad weather and at night and usually go outside during the day. But when I am gone for a few hours it is great to know they will have pee pads to use and will not be uncomfortable to wait until I get home. My dogs are not confused using both pee pads and outside. A give a treat anytime my dogs pee on pee pads and outside. So both are good to them. If you want to train for outside only, you will need to take your puppy outside many many times a day at first to teach her to pee outside. You may already have plans for a puppy pen to confine her. let me know how your new puppy is doing and send more questions if I can help. Thank you, Joyce

@@DiamondDogTraining Joyce! Thank you so much! I’m not exactly sure of her birth date - I’ve been pondering and ‘thinking on’ this decision for almost 2 years - and just last week when I was driving back to Chicago from Florida …. Waking up in a hotel outside Atlanta kinda sad cuz I had to put my St. Petersburg FL house on the market … feeling kinda down and a new ‘empty nest’ mom I remembered that every time I googled Iggys it seemed like they were in GEORGIA !! Never bought a dog before - but grew up in a home where we rescued and adopted and ‘rehabilitated’ dogs - I thought for my last dog in life - it’s ok to ‘buy fancy!’ So I started googling and making some calls and ended up turning my vehicle back south toward Valdosta GA area …. First visited ‘Marchand IGs’ and there seemed to be over 100 happy barking IGs but no little girl for sale (and lots of blue ribbons and trophies everywhere! That’s a foreign world to me! ) Really wanting a little girl, I drove down the street to ‘Marlord IGs’ and found Fran Marron and a much smaller (and quieter!) collection of 4 or 5 ‘moms’ - (and great grandma ‘Helen!’ - one who had 2 girls ‘almost’ ready to go …. Fran Marron was just lovely and when I sat in her living room holding that little girl of course that was IT and I haven’t even thought to ask their birthday! I could see how totally ‘longtime experienced’ Fran was so when she told me we needed to wait a few more weeks - I just was happy to then rush home and have this time to try to ‘get everything ready’ for her, and she is being driven up to Chicago (actually Oak Park not in the city) arriving around Sept. 8 or 9th. I’ve already spoken to Rover about their products - I also directed the person helping me to your videos mentioning that it was you who ‘referred’ me …. While I’m sure I’ll ‘end up’ with their 2 x 4 or even 4 x 4 at some soon point …. I’m wondering if there is another you might recommend during these early puppy weeks (months?) - even the rep said I might want something lighter weight that I could more easily put beside my bed at night etc… She’s already been ‘raised’ so far going outside on real grass with her extensive ‘family’ - and Fran (and the 100’s at Marchand!) all have ‘free reign’ of a great expanse of fenced in rural living, - while I feel bad bringing her to a 2nd floor condo - I am basically retired (work part time from home) and plan on taking her out constantly (every hour? 1/2 hour ? 20 minutes?) as well as lots of socializing and small dog play groups after vaccinations …. Your videos are SO great - exactly what I needed ….. If you are ‘selling’ any type of program for info, training whatever - I would surely buy, pay, join - whatever necessary. I’m going in ‘eyes open’ to Iggy challenges and fragile bones etc. and will do everything possible to keep her safe, healthy, mentally stimulated and happy! Also plan to get pet insurance Wondered if there is a ‘better coverage’ company / plan for IGs under the circumstances ( Hoping they don’t count as a lovable ‘pre-existing condition’ ! Sorry for this LONG text - you are right! I am VERY excited! Getting up early tomorrow and heading to my first dog show ‘Chicago American…’ I am a new fan of yours and customer too. If you’re selling - I’m buying!

Hello, a year old IG is really still a baby and so active. Before you go into your room to work, give your puppy lots of play and exercise. When you are In the room, give him a stuffed Kong or puzzle game . Treat ball or snuffle mat. One hint, when your dog whines and you stop work and take him outside, he is learning how to get you to stop work and play with him. I always stop work and call my girls to me when they are still busy with a toy or game or just laying quiet BEFORE they start to whine. I call them and then take them outside or just play with them I. The room for a few minutes. Then I say all done and go back to work. My dogs are learning the best way to get me to play with them is not to demand my attention. You have to remember to stop working and play with your puppy. Hope this helps. Joyce

Does anyone else want to answer this comment? Please comment. Thank you for your comment, Sabla. There are many reasons to do indoor potty training. Living in an area with heavy snowfall makes indoor training a real advantage. People who work many hours can relax and know their dog is not uncomfortable waiting for you to get home to take them outside. My own dogs are trained to use potty pads in the inclement weather and go potty outside in nice weather. For me it is an added advantage to have an IG both pad trained and outside trained. Thank you, Joyce
