@@marcsteel7284 Hi Marc, i was so sad when my Marnie passed suddenly. i did not even want to walk in the house. i did not talk to anyone, so I am afraid i can't give you suggestions to get over the passing. i will always love and miss Marnie. For about 3 months I was miserable. i knew I needed to find an Italian Greyhound to love and to love me. i started looking and found Debbie at Italian Grehound Place in New York. i was able to adopt Nicky. It was such a happy day. My suggestion would be find an Italian Greyhound to love. i am feeling your sadness. Thank you, Joyce

I’d like to thank you for these videos, Joyce. I’ve learned a lot about proper interaction with our Twigs, and about myself. I had always had chihuahuas as a child, then Lab mixes as an adult. They were dogs who wanted to please us, so they were easy to train. I couldn’t understand, when we got Twigs, how indifferent he was. He reminded me of a cat in his aloofness. He trained to sit, etc. easily enough, but only for treats. If there was no food involved, he just ignored me. But when I would go to his treat jar, he would go rapidly through every trick he knew, without me asking, lol. I was unfamiliar with this “ will work for treats” attitude, and found it frustrating and annoying. It took a long time to learn Twigs knew exactly how to behave as a sight hound; it was me who was ignorant, lol. I kept remembering asking my father how he trained his dog so easily. He said” Well, you have to be smarter than the dog, to start with”. The dog had more class than I did, and with your videos, I’ve been humbled. Our family of my husband, Twigs, and me have all learned a lot about our dog, and I’ve learned to be more attentive and observant, and now have a much more positive attitude and a gentler way of relating to not just Twigs, but to others as well. I had written some negative comments on your site about these dogs. I wrote them after spending a lot of time researching the takeover of small vets by bigger and bigger corporations. Our lovely vet joined an organization which probably sounded good at the time, but his practice has been overtaken by a company which has grown so big they have placed a manager in his practice. At the same time, after my pet healthcare insurance company ( Trupanion ) denied the claim I submitted for the removal of several teeth($600), I had a heated exchange with the vet manager. Although the bill stated Twigs had dental disease, the manager insisted this was termed “ second stage tooth removal”, or something like that. I sensed something didn’t seem right. It was almost like the vet owning corporation and Trupanion were in cahoots to rename procedures so that Trupanion could avoid paying claims. To be told gum and tooth disease is not a disease, and renaming gum disease as “ tooth extraction”, Trupanion refused the claim. At that point I began looking into Trupanion. This is another corporation which quickly grew, and through leveraging itself, has grown to be a huge corporation, too powerful to fight. I traced their growth by researching them online, then I looked at the Better Business Bureau for Trupanion. The first thing I saw was a huge red warning sign on the BBB’s site, followed by case after case of complaints against Trupanion for refusal to pay legitimate claims. I had been paying them $39/ moth since Twigs, a five year old, was a puppy. Then I found they had been fined more than once in the US for unfair business practice. Putting everything I’d learned together, I came to the conclusion that these two huge corporations are cheating pet owners by renaming and controlling definitions to maximize profits. I can’t prove it, but found people wanting to bring a class action lawsuit against Trupanion. That’s how corrupt these businesses grow as they become too powerful to fight. I strongly suggest anyone considering looking to buy health insurance to do their research, and avoid this corporation. If I can ever get past the manager at my vets to speak with the owner, I am going to find out more information. It’s so sad to watch what was the vet with the best reputation in our area become a company no longer able to keep new vets. So, to make a long story even longer,I had just spent a long day tracing out these two corporations. I was angry, frustrated, and was feeling a sense of defeat when I made some comments which were so negative. And while I apologize for my negativity, I feel it’s important for pet owners who haven’t the luxury of time to spend their time figuring out what is happening to the relationship and collusion between these two unethical entities, to be armed with knowledge I had the time to investigate. My apologies for such a long post.

Iggy's are the best - I've had them for the past 17yrs. We lost our senior girl in May and just recently got a puppy. Going from a perfect angel senior to a wild & crazy puppy (while working from home no less!), has been, ohhhhhh.... so much fun! ;-) We are on our way to becoming a civilized puppy though! Very accurate description. My Iggy boy just turned 2. He rarely barks, only when playing or trying to get the attention of my other dog to play. He pretty much is potty trained, it room a lot of patience and consistency. I just don't leave him alone long. My boy does some separation anxiety since he loves to be with their people. He loves car rides too.

My first sight hound was an Iggy. I basically rescued a 9 month old from a puppy mill. He is a wonderful dog, very affectionate and playful. I had to rehome him, and he brought me a new friend, his new owner, Gloria, and he has a pack of four Iggies. His name is Indiana. I've got a lot of fond memories of that dog.

Ive recently aquired a small dog with long black & white course hair. She was found in the streets & noone came forward to claim her. I originally thought she was maybe a chihhuha terrier mix, but saw some videos of the italian greyhound. Omg, i think thats her! She shares the same way of carryin herself as the IG, same very long legs, same body style, same long neck. Very affectionate, loves to groom me lol.

Do a lot of research in both Whippet and Italian Greyhound. I find them to be quite different. As far a a name, you can change a puppy’s name very easily. Associate the new name with good things. Calm name and feed a treat. Call his name and feed him his dinner. Soon puppy will respond to new name.

i am glad the video helped you. Nicky will play with the tooth brush but she will not grab it to brush her teeth. She knows after i brush her teeth every night she gets a piece of chicken. Make the reward very high value when you are teaching your IG to tolerate the brush in the mouth. Honestly, That toothbrush I used in the video is small and soft. I don't even know where I got it. I can't find another one like it. They are all so big and do not fit in the IG mouth. I have switched to a soft small finger tip which my girls like. Finger tips come in the dental kits. I think mine came with the Vets Best Tooth Paste and Gel. I hope this helps. you can try adding water or chicken broth to the dry food. Mix in some pumpkin or grated cheese. i feed my dogs a raw food diet, so i cannot really tell you the best dry puppy food. some people also like the Farmers Dog or Ollie or other brands of cooked food which comes already prepared. Hi, thank you . You can help your puppy to love your singing no matter how loud you sing. The way to do it is to desensitize your puppy to your singing. Start with your softest voice and sing a few notes. As you are singing, toss your puppy yummy treats or super yummy food. You can also have someone else feed your puppy the treats in another room until your puppy starts to relax as you are singing. Increase the amount of time you sing separately from the volume. Eventually you will be able to practice at your normal volume . Try giving your puppy a stuffed kong while you are singing. The king will help satisfy your puppy and you will be able to sing without tossing treats to your puppy . No guarantee that your puppy my start to sing along with you. Yes, I agree IGs are very sensitive. I only use positve reinforcement. Italian Greyhounds need lots of love and attention and cuddling and are velcro babies. i would also say, my first first Italian Greyhound was when I was working a lot of hours. When I was home, i devoted every minute to being with Jenny. She was ok with me leaving her to go to work. But She was very happy when i got my 2nd Italian Greyhound Royal so she had a companion. i think if you are working many hours, it is possible to have a Italian Greyhound, but you must commit to spending all your free time with your IG. Actually you are very observant. Nicky is blinking because I have both hands around her neck in that moment. Immediately after I finished that clip, Nicky yawned to relax herself. Hi Joanne, before you actually start brushing your puppy’s teeth, you need to get your puppy comfortable with you putting your fingers in your puppy’s mouth and rub fingers over the gums. Hi Charlotte, personally I think it is too scary to fly an Italian Greyhound cargo. They travel great in a small soft carrier that fits under the seat. I have flown many times with my IG. And the weather would make it very difficult to fly. Too hot in summer and too very cold in winter. Can you fly with your dog to destination and home or there are companies who drive dogs long distances. Hope this helps . Short answer is No I don’t think IG should travel cargo at any time.

Italian Greyhounds wonderful wonderful dogs. My male iggy is pee pad trained and does not have accidents. You just have to learn your dogs language. One thing I can say about iggys that I don’t find a downfall but some people might is that they are Velcro dogs. I love having my Iggy with me all the time but for some people maybe not.They require a lot of attention so if you don’t have the time to give it to them I would not get an Italian greyhound. If you do then you have a life companion.

I am so glad you sent me a link to this video! I thought I was the only one who kept blankets and doggy stairs all around my furniture for my little Dutchess. I do have a question though, you mentioned clothing during cold weather in your video; Dutchess has Alopecia so the vet said I need to put clothes on my Dutchess in the winter from frostbite and in the summer from sunburn, but lots of people get angry at me for putting clothes on little Dutchess. Have you ever had the same problem with people or is it just where I live?

Hi Danielle, my girls wear long sleeve tops in the house when it is cold outside. Little Milos Closet on Etsy is a great place to buy clothes. Melodee is a fantastic person to help you. I sent her my girls measurements and she makes custom clothes . Nicky is longer tha. Most Italian Greyhounds and has dew claws which rub on the material. Melodee makes the legs a little shorter. Here is a link to a video on opening their new fall and winter clothes. My dogs have always worn coats and spring jackets. I would not want to be wearing my bathing suit all the time. I Would freeze. Female Iggys can be difficult to potty train. They are extremely cuddly. They can be persnickety with food-- make sure you keep your food reciepts. Not the best dog to take to the dog park because they're fragile. Not good on hikes exceeding 5 miles. Custom tailored clothing for those in cold climates can be very costly. They need nail trimming every month. They are like cats... watch what you keep on the counter. It is suggested to have pet insurance for them because their fragility. They are extremely difficult to raise as a puppy. They require constant attention. Try not to adopt until spring or summer.

Your comments are interesting. Thank you. Do you think female IG’s are more difficult than males to potty train. I think you can be successful potty training both. Just providing inside a place for males to lift legs can be more difficult. Yes, they live to cuddle . I have never had an IG who was persnickety with food, but I have fed a raw food diet for over 25 years. I agree dog parks can be dangerous , but that can be for any dog. I do not take my dogs to dog parks. I don’t hike more than a short distance so I can’t answer that. Try Little Milo’s closet. Melodee makes the greatest custom clothes that are very reasonable in cost. Nail trimming I think every week . Yes they climb on things . Teaching place helps that issue. Pet insurance is very helpful to have. Leg breaks are always possible. I love IG puppies, so I don’t think they of them as difficult to raise . But I know what you mean. They are more difficult than many dogs to raise as puppies. Any season is fine for me to get a puppy. I potty Train indoors as puppies and bad weather and outdoors in nice weather.

I had a female IG that lived to be almost 15. With her long legs, she was a great hiker. I usually left her off-leash on trails and she would run ahead, then come back to check on me, then run ahead again. I've taken her on multiple 10 and 15 mile hikes with no problem. There were only about three times that I had to carry her in the middle of a hike--once when it started snowing at higher elevation and she got wet and cold, another time when the temperature was very hot and I might not have fed or hydrated her enough, and one other time when there was a mountain full of mosquitoes and I worried she was being eaten alive. I got my second IG puppy recently and one of the biggest reasons for choosing this breed again is that iggies are about the only small dogs that can do big hikes. I'd guess that when I did a 7 mile hike, my Iggy was doing more like a 20 mile hike with all the going back and forth on the trail. They are an athletic breed. Plus, they are beautiful without any need for grooming and such lovely companions, too.

Would a stepping stool work to prevent jumping a breaking a leg when younger

Hi Morgan, Do you mean dog steps or a low step stool. Dog Steps I use for my older puppies and adults after they can jump up onto the furniture by themselves. When they jump up, I help them learn to jump down by holding them by the waist and guide them to the ground not jump outward into the air. A step stool is very low to the ground. But any jumping off a stool always is a chance of injury. But puppies need exercise to build up muscle. Not sure I answered your question. Did I ? Thank you for your comment. Joyce

@@DiamondDogTraining I would train them to use that instead of jumping on and off the couch like ones for a dog and if they don’t have them I would ask my dad to make one for me that was custom to the dog because my dad is a home builder and well if he can build a house he can build doggy steps

Great your dad can help you. To build steps is wonderful, but just one question. How do you guarantee your puppy will always go down the steps and not jump off the couch ? If you Dad could build a step that runs the length of the couch. Great . I just don’t put my puppy on the couch until the puppy can jump up on their own. Then I put lots of pillows in front of the couch and teach my puppy to jump Down into the pillows. We are only talking about 4-6 weeks depending on your puppy . Hope this helps . Are you able to use a crate with a Italian greyhound and should they sleep in a crate?

Hi Emma, are you referring to at night? At night when I have a puppy, I have a puppy pen set up next to my bed. When my puppy is potty trained and can get on and off the bed by them self, then my puppy sleeps in bed with me. My bed is lower to the ground to prevent injury and I have steps for my dogs to get on the bed. My adults usually don’t use the steps . They like to jump off the bed. During the day, I do have my puppy take naps in a crate. I start by having them take naps in the puppy pen . I feed all meals in the crate and slowly teach my puppy to like being in the crate with the door closed. My adult dogs like to go in their crates. I don’t use crates with my adult dogs, but if I need to my dogs do not become upset. I have a video on stop dog barking in the crate which my help you. I hope this answers your question. My Iggy rarely barks...he does vocalize, though. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6iUYqKwm6yga7M Also...if you don't have time to raise a puppy - and they do take a LOT of work & time to raise!!! - it might be an option to find a reputable breeder (one who shows, preferably) who is putting their Iggies into retirement. Breeders can't keep every precious Iggy to the end of their days because they're running a business, but when a female has passed the point of showing & safely giving birth, or they decide to replace a male for the sake of keeping healthy bloodlines, the breeder will be looking to find the best homes for them. Often, these Iggies have been very well loved & trained. They are exceptionally healthy, since they have been bred for show & still have many good years left! Iggies have a long life-span, so getting an adult Iggy in this manner can be a great solution for you & the breeder. Reputable breeder is the key, though!

Hard to believe you have to brush a dog's teeth several times a week. I wonder what it is you are feeding your dogs that contributes to this issue?

Hi Bradd, thank you for your question. When you own an Italian Greyhound, you learn this breed has a problem with their teeth and in order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease an owner needs to brush their teeth at least 3-4 times a week. Best is every day. Ask any person you know that has owned an Italian Greyhound and they will tell you the same thing. Thank you.

My dogs are in a raw food diet. They eat meaty bones and chicken necks and chicken backs. I believe this diet keeps the teeth in better condition, but I still brush almost every day to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

i have an iggy with epilepsy and awful teeth. just had 13 teeth removed and shes on medication twice a day for the rest of her life. be careful where you shop! lesson learned! they are absolutely wonderful dogs though. just know you are investing in teeth cleanings, check-ups, potential health "hiccups", etc with iggies. i will never own another breed!

i totally agree. i would never have another breed. Yes, buying from a good breeder who does health testing will help you get a healthy puppy. Yes, I had an IG with epilepsy. He was on medication for years. you have to be prepared to do what ever it takes to keep them healthy. Brushing teeth every day and all the other health problems. Thank you for your comment. Everyone should know all the facts about Italian Greyhounds BEFORE they decide if this is the breed for them. When you know all the drawbacks and still choose the breed, then you know this is the dog for you. So sorry for your little girl's health problems, but I know she is in the best of hands.
