I have had my toy poodle for 4 days, the breeders toilet trained him on wee mats. I was throwing away the wee mats when he would wee and poo and realised I need to keep a wee mat down that he pee'd on to smell his scent and know where to go everytime. So far so good 👍

It's a challenge to potty train a pup. There are small wins but most times they pee everywhere lol. Patience is key.

Keep them with the leash at home, and once they show you signs of wanting to potty… and always say the same words! I raised my puppy 🐶 since she was two weeks. Sadly she passed in February, she was 12 years old… and also flew with me, and did not potty until we got outside of the airport… they’re smarter then human. You’re too young to complain about being tired!

This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used. So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it. At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material. Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm. So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated. Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly. Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained. In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes. Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home. As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust. To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week. By the way, pee pads are not only very expensive, they are also very disgusting.

I would try and avoid pee pee pads at all cost. Especially, if you have a small dog. I trained my puppy using pee pee pads and she associated throw rugs as pee pee pads. It was a nightmare retraining her all over again. And if with that she still would pee on the throw rugs.
@poodlemom2 жыл бұрын
This is a very valid point. Thank you so much for sharing! I have seen this issue with some pups too but not very often. In my experience it’s not always the case. Because Summer and Bailey were trained on pee pads if not newspaper and never peed on throw rugs unless it’s an absolute emergency meaning- they were locked up without access to the designated potty area 😅 Also I have friends who have toy dogs living in condos full of throw rugs and carpets. But they only pee on the pee pads or their designated potty areas in the condo.
@alodz8 ай бұрын
I use a pee tray with a removable mesh lid and place the pee pad inside it. If you've never used a pee tray before, I highly recommend it. To transition your dog to using a pee tray, you can place the pee pad on top of the tray lid and allow your dog to pee/poop there. Then, return the pee pad inside the tray. Your dog hopefully then associate the pee tray as his designated pee/ poop place. Good luck ❤

Our 2 month old shih tzu is almost fully potty trained. I put him in his playpen and I put pee pad on top of a pee training box. I used an inducer spray at first and didn’t remove pads with pee so he recognizes the smell and associates it as the potty area. He poops on pee pads as well. He gets accidents sometimes but 80% of the time he pees and poops in the correct spot. I’m surprised he got used to it immediately.

We are using a pee pad holder for our 2 and a half year old Bichon. When she was a puppy, we would leave the pee pad next to her crate. But she ends up playing with it and chewing/tearing it apart in small pieces and when we come home from work, its such a big mess. So eventually she learned to pee and poo in the pee pad holder. Sometimes she has accidents even as an adult, but she knows the pee pad holder is her bathroom. We have one near the livingroom/dining area and she has one in her bedroom. We’re hoping to train the new puppy using the pee pad holder. Maybe I should start with the pee pad then put the pee pad holder and put some pee pad around the pee pad holder. Its a good thing that we’re picking her up on Saturday. We have 2 days to train her. During the work week, the puppy will be with our other dog. We will just leave her contained in the training area on a corner in our dog’s bedroom. 😅

I have a question. I have a puppy, and what we're doing right now is waking up every 2-3 hours and letting the puppy pee on a pee pad before putting her back in the crate. Could I just leave the crate door open all night and let her use it when she needs to? Or will the mess up/delay the crate-training/house-training process?
@poodlemom Жыл бұрын
Hahaha, this question... If I will be honest, you can. But no guarantees if the method will work. The whole idea of using the crate training is to use the natural instincts of the dog to your advantage in training. Now you don't have to do the 2-3 hours every single day. Just make the sacrifice for maybe 1-3 days to see the body schedule of your puppy. It varies, some need to potty just 1-2x or even none at all. For my new puppy for example, she just needs 1 extra in between and we are good to last until morning, provided I let her pee at exactly 6am for example- the time I set for waking up ^^ You can set it at a later time too if that is what works better for you.

Hi Lana, yes you can use a grass patch if you prefer. Just substitute it. For outdoors, I just take the pee pads initially to guide them to the grass :) then usually it's their instincts that kick in. In Finn's case, he just started imitating Summer and Bailey. :) If he is your only dog, then yes, you would have to take him out round the clock. :)

@poodlemom Жыл бұрын
In my experience no. You may have to guide them first but more often than not. Once they know the routine, it's instinctive to them.

.it was a great job! i watched this along with my pup toy poodle, archie. your 1st potty training video worked for us. and it did helped me to be a more disciplined pup daddeh. its just there's a lot of times that i am worried if i am doing less for my pup. i have troubles attaching a leash in him (he bites and chew on it once it is attached) and he tends to scratch his collar when he is not busy. i keep his collar on during the day and remove it when he sleeps. i hope you can advise me on this one. thanks! regards to bailey, summer and finn.

Thank you so much Eric! Lol! In my experience it was also harder to train myself more than the dog hhhahahhahah!! It's totally ok! XD For the leash, we have videos on it coming up as well ^^ kinda hard to write it here in the comments, but if you want to know, just shoot us a message in IG or FB and even Tiktok ^^

@poodlemom2 жыл бұрын
Hello! I usually do it after any meal and upon waking up and before going to bed. It also depends on their age, like for a 2 month old pup, every 2-3 hours I let them go potty :)

does your pup cry when you close the door to the crate? Mine is a 9 week old toy and she cries for 40 min so I have been leaving the crate door open

Hello! Finn definitely cried in the beginning and so did Summer and Bailey. But Finn was the worst! Summer and Bailey only cried for a few minutes until they fell asleep.

Thoughts on puppy training sprays pls?
@poodlemom3 жыл бұрын
I’ve used them before but never really understood how they actually help and support potty training. To be fair though, I never truly maximized the use of potty sprays because I found the method I use to be better. So I never had the need for potty training sprays thus saving more money in the process as well. But if you are talking about potty sprays to rid of pee smell and stains. I don’t have enough words to recommend Pure Paw’s Starline No Rinse Shampoo :) I have linked them all in the description boxes of most of our videos!

Shucks! This is a common question that is most difficult for me to answer as each person has their own set of preferences and choices when choosing a breeder. >_< So I am afraid, I might not be the best person to ask publicly. We can talk more about it in a private message perhaps.

my dog is 3 yrs old and is potty trained to go outside but lately the weather has been super bad and she found a spot in home on carpet. She also will go on pee pad but ofcourse prefers the carpet or outside. Till now I was avoiding pee pad since I like dogs to go outside but because of weather its becoming harder and harder for her and me. What are your thoughts on pee pad? are they considered gross?
@Tiazz. Жыл бұрын
Not at all , all you need to do it change them every other day. I trained my Puppy from 11 weeks and he is now almost 2 years old and has no problem going outside or inside at all! It is so useful for them to learn this skill
@poodlemom4 ай бұрын
Get rid of that carpet if not- have it washed with an enzymatic cleaner. His/her scent is still there hence the preference to keep going back to the carpet.

So do you remove the pee pad all together and then just have them pee outside? How do they know to go outside?
@poodlemom Жыл бұрын
Hahah you can start with taking the pee pad outside in the garden. Or! Work with their potty schedule. Every morning instead of letting them out inside the house to go potty on the pad. Take them outside.
@annmorganwoodard9535 Жыл бұрын
My pup don't like to pee on a soiled pad. He whines until I change it, before he goes. If I don't he goes elsewhere while looking at me. He knows where to go, but at times just breeze past the pad for a no Bear zone.
@alodz8 ай бұрын
You can use pee tray that have removable mesh lid and put the pee pad inside. With the mesh lid, it can help to keep the surface dry. You can wipe it clean or wash it later.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this! So Summer also had this issue but only after she was trained to potty on the pads/newspaper. It was already the sign for me to move the pad to the garden where I transitioned her potty training. Is this also the point where you are at?

I'm trying to pad train my 4 month old shihtzu, but she's having a hard time. My older shihtzu came pad trained so I'm new to this training. If we leave her out of the pen, she won't use the pads my boy does and will pee and poo on the floor 😢 I'm going to put more pads in the pen and see if anything changes
@poodlemom4 ай бұрын
Try covering the whole floor with pads initially. Learn her behaviors where she commonly pees then slowly lessen the pee pads.
