Thank you so much! I just adopted a dog, and he was never house trained. I have been able to teach him to go outside. When I first brought him home, he was just going EVERYWHERE! I would take him outside and nothing. I started taking him outside every hour. Nothing was working. Then, my husband and I also started going outside, I know, it is gross, but it worked. He goes outside most times, but at night (I even take him outside before bed) he gets up and goes in one of two places in the house. If I happen to hear him up, I take him out, and that usually works. One more thing, he refuses to get up in the morning with my husband! He will only get up with me. So, I need to work on that. Thank you for all your help!

How about when your puppy is not allowed to go outside because he didnt finalised his vaccine scheme ? We are about to welcome our puppy who will be 7-8 weeks old at that time. The vet told us that only 2 weeks after his last vaccine meaning only on 14 weeks old we can start taking him outside, until than we will need to teach him on a pad. How can you switch from a pad to outside ?

I’ve had dogs all of my life and this seems like a bunch of crap. I’m very sorry if that sounds crude. The only thing I have ever done is take them outside. Maybe a little walk. As soon as they smell another dog, they go.

I used a crate, a puppy play-pen and a leash. But the most successful part was taking her ball outside. She’d see it and I’d say potty as soon as she finished her biz I threw the ball. She learned that when she pottied she got to play. It was fast!

I use a cheap leash for puppies with a loop. I see it as umbilical cord and constantly have the leash in my hand or near me. This way I have total control and can notice every sign my puppy shows. I don't let my puppy run around freely. I started doing this in the 1980's, when I had a Rottweiler puppy and several small children. Potty training went so perfectly well, that I did this with all my other puppies and also worth my current puppy. With 17 weeks I start letting my puppy run free a little, but I keep him supervised when he goes about freely. Also leash training is so much easier if you have your puppy on the leash at home also. Staying together 24/7 for the first months, helps the bonding experience. Recall works perfectly outside as well, when my puppy is allowed to explore a field or grass areas when going on adventure walks together. When potty training, I go outside so often that my puppy will only have accidents outdoors. I set him up for success by keeping him that close. The number of potty repetitions is so high that the puppy understands it even before being able to control his bladder, which happens around week 12. When my puppy is 13 to 14 weeks old, the puppy can go potty on command. My current puppy was able to do this with 12 weeks straight. Of course I took him outside for potty time before and after sleeping, eating, an regularly in the rest of the time, starting with potty time every single hour. Meanwhile we go outside every 3 hours, and before and after sleeping and feeding. Until my puppy was 16 weeks old, I carried him outside when waking up, to prevent accidents from happening inside while walking to the house door. My current puppy is the first winter puppy, which is both positive and negative: puppies go faster potty when their feet are cold and wet, so success happens fast, but every time we go outside, I have to dress up for the cold weather. So I sleep in jogging pants and put on a sweatshirt in the morning after waking up. All the other times I dress up more, as winter in Germany is cold. I also go on extended adventure walks with my puppy and we make many breaks on some random benches, where my puppy can observe the changing environment with people, dogs, cars, etc. This way he gets acquainted to daily happenings, which helps with socialization.

I'm working on this with my puppy to wean him off the puppy pads that the family used in the litter's playroom. I never really liked the idea of using pee pads because that's an extra step to housebreaking that seems to delay the process and it's always better to give dogs the idea that going to the bathroom outside is what's expected of them. He's had a few pee accidents because he really doesn't squat (and not old enough to start lifting his leg) so sometimes it is hard to tell if he's about to pee, but taking him out after he takes a nap, eats or drinks, plays vigorously, and in the morning after he's been in his crate has been working very well. Usually he pees as soon as he gets outside. He doesn't always poop, but I think he just has to pee alot more often than he needs to poop. So far he has had 0 poop accidents in the house. I think for being just weaned he's doing amazingly well!

Susan, I can't thank you enough for this video, which I had watched numerous times before getting our 7 1/2 week old pup last weekend :). Today is day 5 and the only accident we've had is when I let my husband watch the pup for 2 seconds (he did NOT watch your video!)! I think you are the only trainer that has advised to NOT reward your pup after pee or poop (unless I misunderstood) and my little pup has been perfect (because I've made him successful!). He has a gated area outside that he goes to, on his own now, and relieves himself within seconds (poop takes a little longer). He is actually now heading and looking towards the back door to signal us (still inside ex pen of course). Working on the earliest of stages in Crate Games and Puppy Games, but the one thing that has been a challenge is that he HATES the leash. Any time I pick it up he pulls like a crazy man. If you could do a podcast about starting to condition a puppy to be at least compliant on a leash, especially since you recommend that they wear one for training in the beginning. Or maybe I can figure it out, now that I think about it, maybe it has something to do with the collar grab game....but it sure would be helpful to have your guidance with an energy crazed puppy :) Thank you for all that you and your team do ;)

Thank you for this video. I think my big mistake is not putting a leash on my puppy before getting them outside to poop/pee. It's an important cue that I've neglected since I have a fenced yard. I will start today, using a leash. Accidents inside are infrequent but they are still happening so as you say, "It's on me" to do the proper training. Another thing that helps after cleaning up inside is to use "Nature's Miracle" in a spray bottle. It is an enzyme spray that breaks down the odor to discourage the puppy from using the same area again.

Couple things I've had real success with is pair the successful trip out to pee with a word. 'Hurry up' comes pretty naturally to me as 'm stood out there at 6 a.m. freezing my butt off so that's what I use. First week I say it after she goes and I tell her 'good hurry up' or I simply say hurry up as soon as she starts to go. Like you said there's no messing about, no talk no play just get it over with so we can both get back in where it's warm (or cool or not raining or whatever.) By start of the second week the word seems to start meaning something to her so I say it as I ck my spot and stop walking. Not rrepeatedly, like you said I don't want to distract her. I also don't clean up after her first week or 2 so she's in no doubt what this spot is for. Why I thin this is so good is later in life if I need her to do it in a weird place like at a noisy truck stop on concrete on a trip or on a little patch f astroturf in a hotel hallway or bathroom or something she's got a word queue as wel as al the other clues to help her get it. I had a Dobie who was so good about obeying this verbal queue she'd squat and really try, really strain anywhere if I just said the word. We called her our 'push-button pee-er.' Thnx so much for sharing these podcasts, you've really helped me work through and refine some things I was having trouble understanding how to straighten out. Very glad I found you.

Hi Susan! You mention that the puppy ideally will start going towards the door when they have to potty. I'm just curious about that, because most of my pups free time is in one of various "gated community" expens, so they would not be able to walk themselves to the door to outside. Do you think they will start sitting at the door to the expen? Or do you give your pups much more freedom in the house much sooner than I realized?

I have tried every method you listed in this video but she will not relieve herself outside. She have tried waiting it out outside for hours. We’ve tried the back and forth, but the second we bring her inside she will find a place in the house to potty. If we put her in the crate and walk away she will just potty in there. I also started by putting a puppy pad outside where I want her to go, and initially she went on it, then she went near or on it, and sometimes I don't put it down (after two weeks home) and she'll now just go on the ground in the little pen I set up in the area I want her to use. Hope this helps if you're still struggling, I wish you luck

So when I found these two dogs and there was no owners around. The female was actually pregnant and weeks away from giving birth. I helped her give birth to the puppies and even gave one of them CPR. These were shepskies what's their half German shepherd and half husky some of them look like huskies and some of them look like a mix between the two with beautiful blue or blue and brown eyes! They are adorable. It took me forever to find homes for the puppies because I was very picky on who I chose this year in particular has been hard because my wife and I were in a car accident on our way to a wedding and both of our cars were totaled and the insurance company refused to pay out anything. So it left us with a whole lot of debt. And a very bad situation. So taking on 12 extra dogs was not something that we anticipated. Plus neither one of us are rich and I'm partially disabled due to a 30 ft fall 10 years ago where I broke my spine . But, we did the best we could and not only took care of the dogs we made sure that they had proper vitamins and everything that they needed to be as healthy as possible. We found owners for seven of the dogs and we still have three. Our daughter who is 18 and went in the Army recently had one of the dogs but because she can't keep her dog on base she brought it back home. So now we have three of the puppies that are 4 months old. Two of them are pretty good at using training pads. Are daughters puppy is doing the best he can and his learning because he came from using a yard already that was fenced in. We don't have a fenced in yard because we have two acres of land that we live on and it's just not in our budget right now to put up a fence. So we have to physically walk them on leashes so they don't run away. Now with all that said, my main issue is when I first wake up I have to pee and I'm on the second floor and being partially disabled it takes me about 5 minutes to get it together to get downstairs to get the dogs on the leash to get them outside. They pee as soon as I pee and when we wake up. And with them doing that it doesn't allow me to get them out of the door and get them outside I don't know what else to do at this point.

I got a new puppy on Sunday and have been watching the puppy videos repeatedly. I have a question… My floors are hardwood and I’ve got her puppy pen setup in my living room. I’m wondering if I should put some washable rugs down for traction for her or wait until she’s more reliable with potty training? We’ve had one accident in 24 hours and it was obviously my fault cause I was blowing my nose.

Eps sniffs in a small circle. Her tells are helpful. I trained potty on cue on lead with an old stable trick for cueing horses to pee. She has a specific whistle and she knows she has 1min to take any needed ablution before time is up. Epsilon has this cue worked out and I am grateful it works on horses and dogs. This clip is very helpful.

I'm unsure if this will be read but if anyone knows the answer I would be grateful for the direction. How long do you leave your puppy in the kennel if he/she has not pottied? We had an episode yesterday where our puppy would not go potty in a new designated area and dug her paws in the 3 hours. She carried on in her kennel as if she was being killed. We took her out ever few minutes knowing she had to peee but she wouldn't budge. Finally it was getting to be bed time and we just threw up our arms and let her pee outside where ever she wanted to.

I've used an outdoor pen, (just a cheap and quite flimsy rabbit/pet pen), so she can be loose in the pen to choose her spot but is in a limited area just a couple of sqare metres.

What if my puppy doesn't potty outside? We could be there for couple hours and nothing happens, she just doesn't potty there but pees immediately when we come back inside. Even if I see signals that she needs to pee and we go back outside, she doesn't potty until we come back inside.

Very good video. Thanks. I got a fake grass pee patch, but looking for real grass near exit door for indoor. While he is still a puppy (3 to 4 months) and slowly move that one outside too but once he knows how to signal someone to go out. I got lot of space inside the house where I can put a fake or real grass patch and one outside etc (big backyard) - question is: Should I have both indoor and outdoor option for him to do this at anytime he want? if I work in office away from home for 8 hours, and if I only choose outside then he don't know what to do and do pee indoor on tiles. Should I ? or provide both option. He is a small dog - Mini Cavoodle so he will be mostly living indoor - my first dog so I am not sure if it is OK to leave him outdoor under shed, in secure area with long leash on for 8 hours? like a large play area that is safe and on leash so he don't run away by mistake. Plus I have secure fencing so nothing to worry but still I will do a wall hook and a small patch for him to do business and chill out bed during day. With Auto kibble feeder with right portion - all of this is only when I am away from home 3 days a week. Would this work? And what about when I am home, still keep him outside as regular habit and bring him indoor when I want to play with him as a quality time? Or put a door on the security fence and let him in and out whenever he want? I see there are doors which can sense and open only for registered microchip number so it could be a good long term idea. do you think this is way to go? This is to avoid us waking up at 6:30 am on Saturday and Sunday morning when we had a big night - movie, outing on concert etc. Please advise. My puppy is already fast trained on fake grass area indoor, just in 2 days - very smart obedient dog and I am spending good time training him too. as I do WFH it helps. Oh btw, sorry for too long question.

We lost our almost 15 year old Chocolate Lab Hunter about 1.5 months ago. Hunter was THE BEST boy, and we miss him so much. We just adopted Sully, our 14 week old Champagne/Cinnamon lab a few days ago. He is having mostly pee accidents in the house though I try as I might take him out often. I noticed he has been peeing in spots Hunter always loved to lie down. Could this possibly be a residual response, marking on Hunter's spaces? Hunter never had any inside accidents in our new house.

Hi @wiscogirl81, we're so sorry for your loss of Hunter, and thrilled that Sully is now your new best boy. It's important to remember that Sully is quite young and new to your home, and he's also still learning! Since you just adopted Sully a few days ago, we would recommend working through the protocol and building up the steps outlined here. Also Susan has a fantastic puppy playlist that will help you with many other puppy questions! kzbin.info/aero/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5 We have no doubt that Sully will fit right into your new home. 💗 (Sarah - DogsThat)

Great video, Susan. I have the way I have watched it twice already. Issue: I get up between 2 and 3 a.m. and have always done so in my adult years. When I was potty training my dearly departed 11-year-old Boxer, I would take her out and tell her to go piddle. She would squat, go, and be done. Then, we would go back to bed. Should I start that with the new puppy? I'm unsure how much potty training the breeder will have done with the new puppy. My girl, Camo, came pretty much potty trained, and her last accident was at😅 6 months old, and it was because I didn't hear her bark. SO, my question is: Should I wake up my new puppy (Charlie) to go potty when I get up in the middle of the night?

i live in a 3 story condo and most of the time, the activity in the house is a family room at the basement level. There is no quick way to get outside without negotiating a flight of stairs. The quickest route is up the basement stairs and then through the garage to the yard. My concern with using the garage is the time it takes and noise to open the garage door snd its noisy. Would pee pads ever be an option for them in the play pen in the basement?

Unfortunately, my puppy does just stop and drop (urine, that is) He'll walk around with his nose to the ground so I get on alert, then he moves off as if nothing just happened and then boom, stop and drop. I've tried several ways to catch him, but now he doesn't want to stay in his potty area at all. My biggest problem is that he's so small (1.4#) and was told not to use a collar on a Yorkie. And also was told not to let him outside until he's had all his shots, because he's so tiny he could get sick so easily. I think I'm going to have to make him a light-weight harness type thing and use a light-weight rope so I can get him out on the patio at least. Anyway, I've watched this video several times before he came to us, and I thought I was doing things as well as could be done. But now that he's here and I'm experiencing his habits, I watched it again and just solidified what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, he's pretty good most times. I'm going to come up with a plan that should fix this. Thanks for the lesson.

Watching this video I realized that I have probably given our 10 week old pup too much space to explore while out for a potty break - so that's an easy fix. I do have a question - and you mentioned weather - but I do live in an area with every-changing and not always so pleasant weather (Newfoundland), especially in the winter and our so-called spring. What are your thoughts on training for outside and an indoor potty area (either a pee pad or a potty porch)? Am I inviting confusion or future challenges? Would love your insights.

I put her in her crate when she doesn’t go but she screams and I don’t want her to develop a bad relationship with her crate. I feel at a loss, is it just persistence and consistency? Xx

When your pup is sniffing the floor or carpet immediately pick him up and bring him outside. Once he pees or poops praise him and if you want give him a treat. Praise with an excited YES!!! GOOD BOY!!! If you live where you want or need to use pee pads, always keep the pads in the same place, there will be accidents at first, don't get angry, just pick him up and put him on the pee pad. Showing him where he's allowed to go. Say , go pee pee. Soon he will stop playing and run to the pee pad. Praise him during the time he pees or poops, not after! Give a treat if you want or lots of praise. YES!!! GOOD BOY!! I PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE CRATE TRAINING. I have a four by eight pen, at one end is his bed, toys and water. At the far end is a wide pee pad. I use this at night and if I go out. He's safe and has everything he needs until I get home. Once I get home I leash him and take him out to pee or poop. When he comes in he has the freedom of my home. Works great for me and my pup. When you create train you worry about getting home hoping he's not crying because he needs to pee bad. I wish I could post a picture of he's setup, it works perfectly. Also he's only 16 weeks and sleeps all night without waking me. He can wake up walk to the other end of his pen ,pee and go right back to sleep.
