@@finefinishsupply Dad I am just basing this on how old you look. You have an awesome son to come on your channel and brag of you. Obviously you are great at being a dad as well. Congrats. I have been in the painting business in some form or another for decades. Just recently though started my own business (sept 22,2020). Only have sprayed a few sets of cabinets (7) but I know the process of spraying is easy but here learning various ideas/spins and techniques to separate myself from the Shwerwin Williams Kem Aqua grab ya money and run guys. First I would like to thank you for taking the time from your day to do up such videos and educate us. Secondly I came from an autobody background. Not saying you havent learned this but just in case you haven't. On cabinets I took a thing from autobody with me for a more consistent scratch/scuff pattern. 3M scotch brite pads. Grey or gray what ever way you wanna spell it lol, and maroon are my go to. Easy to get into the areas that sand paper tries your patiences with. I use dark grey with krud cutter and initial scuff. Wipe down let dry then then dark grey again. Blow off then maroon pad. Blow down, alcohol wipe down, blow dry/off then prime or straight paint. depending on the customers desired look. My first job/cabinet job was oak. I was between holy phuck these folks are crazy enough to trust me with their walls and trim/doors but completely nuts trusting me to do their cabinets lol. Not just the kitchen but the man cave bar cabinets in the basement. Lets just say starting out on my own. First job should of been about $130K now learning more on pricing and the normal rates. I did it for $73k and change. The kitchen was just the usual. Solid color. I used Urathane in iron ore color. The bar cabinets he wanted this corvette blue color with the rally stripes up through ech door. Man I was tired just from the measuring, taping and masking lol. I ened up sanding the doors down to bare wood. Rubbing in one coat of white for the rally stripes in the cheapest water paint I could get from HD. I used it to mix mdf dust as a grain filler for the remainder of the door that was to get the corvette blue color. I sprayed two coats of poly over the ares to get blue. Scuffed it with a LIGHT greay (not dark grey) scotch pad. Used valspar automotive paint to spray the corvette blue 5 coats. Mixed for me by a local body shop. Auto paint sprays so nice lol. Scuffed it down well again with the light grey pad, sprayed it with 4 coats of valspar euro clear. Let it cure for 3-4 weeks at their place. Went back and buffed them out with auto polishes. The customer was ecstatic which obvioulsy made me feel the same. Going back in a few weeks (or I hope) when these covid restrictions lift in my area to paint the shell of a 1980s. corvette he wants to mount on his wall in his mancave/bar. Anyway that ramble is why i am here. I wanna build a portfolio of work that separates me from "(insert city name) pro painters" or pro painter such and such. I might have just done a few jobs yet and very few in my city know my company yet. But im not starving to death and in 2 yrs 5 yrs or it might take 10 yrs. When people in this city what a top notch job done on their painting needs I will be ( and I will not accept being recommended as a 2ed choice) the one thats recommended by anyone that had me do their work or anyone thats seen my work. Working in an small auto body shop I was the one doing the work and the boss/owner got the praise. I left sept past and he's not doing so well now. Odd how that works out. lol Anyway thanks again for the educational vid and the time it took you to make it is very much appreciated. Once I get to the point where I can buy or lease a space thats not my cluttered home garage lol. I will share my own knowledge as well.

This may be a dumb question but I'm not good at painting or any form of this work. Why do you need to scuff the surface before applying a second coat? Why wouldn't it be fine just adding another coat? Does it not adhere as well? The cool part about this finish is that it doesn't have to be perfect and at this point it would just be considered authentic which would be more valuable to me personally. It has character. It's not like buying laminated floor where every so many pieces are identical. Beautiful work!

What would you do with the base cabinets? The same process on site in the home? Would you use different product or just the vinyl lacquer base coat with clear? And I'm assuming this product wouldn't work well with grain filler since you brushed the material to open the grain...
@finefinishsupply4 жыл бұрын
Same process. this product works well over oak without glaze. I was going for a cerused finish, that is why I wire brushed it
@mansardmanor38694 жыл бұрын
Lacquer based, I assume that the product is high with VOC which if used indoors at the job site. You run a high probability that you may indeed start a fire. Nice for the doors, what about the base cabinet frame 🤔 Hope I'm wrong, have you seen news footage of a house painter using high VOC and the house is full of flames coming out of the windows

Hi Louis, great video, very well done. One thing I'm confused about, though, is the initial (red) base coats -- since the intent was for the doors to have a mostly red finish (with glaze too of course), the vinyl base coat serves as both primer AND final color? I've done a little bit of cabinet spraying using water-based Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua Plus, and the recommended schedule is 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of color. If you had not intended to do the powder glazing, and just wanted red doors, are you saying that with the Axalta materials you can just tint your base coat to your desired color and spray a couple of coats and you're ready for clear?
