Other thing guys, there's this method called Shadowing you may like to do this while you're listening to podcasts. Now, I just want to add after a year since my last post here, DO NOT LEAVE MOVIES OR SERIES ON THE SIDELINES because, trust me, though your are losing time with all the effects and so forth, they are really helpful. It's not like podcasts where they speak slower and with fancy words, on movies and series it's daily english and most of advanced english speakers I know achieved this level by watching plenty of movies and series.

There are two types of listening. 1) Trying to understand what they're saying in for example a podcast (passively) 2) Having a conversation with someone which requires you to respond back. This is more difficult. But at the same time will help you a lot more (actively)

Not really. I have lots of conversations about enrollment/daily tasks (to manage some issues with my bank accounts as a example) and I feel influent. However, I don't feel so when I'm watching some movie or interview. It's more easier to listen/speak in real life in compare to watching videos

This is a good question. You can find the answer below. (It's a long one.) When you don't understand the material, there are three things you can do. ==== Thing #1: Do nothing. ==== It’s not a big deal if you don’t understand some parts of the conversation as long as you understand the main idea. You don’t need to read the transcript just because you can’t make out some words/sentences. Now you might be wondering, “If I don’t read, how will I learn the meaning of new vocabulary?” This is a common concern. Some English students believe that in order to learn new words, they must look up those words in a dictionary. They believe that it’s the only way to learn new words. But that’s not true! The truth is, your amazing brain has the ability to learn the meanings of new words from context (surrounding words). This is how you learned your first language (without using any transcript or dictionary). So, don’t worry if you don’t know some words when listening to English. If you hear people use those words multiple times in different contexts, your brain will eventually figure out the meanings of those words. But what if what you’re listening to is too difficult, and you don’t even understand the main idea? What do you do? In this case, you should do thing #2. ==== Thing #2: Listen to something “easier”. ==== When some students start listening to something, they try to finish it even though it’s too difficult to understand. Trying to do so is painful. After a while, these students usually quit improving their English altogether! This behavior is ridiculous. There’s a lot of free English material on the Internet. And new English material is produced every day. Therefore, there’s absolutely no need to “finish” what you start. If what you’re listening to is too difficult (or boring), just delete it and find something else to listen to! But what if almost everything is too difficult for you? What do you do? In this case, you should do thing #3. ==== Thing #3: Read in English to improve your vocabulary. ==== f you feel like almost everything you listen to is too difficult to understand, your vocabulary is probably very small. That’s why you have trouble understanding most English conversations. In this case, I recommend that, other than listening to English, you also read in English to quickly learn words and phrases commonly used in conversations.

When I was learning French, my teacher told me that I had to listen to the same dialogs (the dialogs of our book) many times until being able to understand them very well without the text. So I started listening to those dialogs with enthusiasm. I do not know how many times I listened to them. At that time I had any ipod so I just could listened to them at home. Well, I tried out several things. I also watched some movies, but I did that to get familiar with the sounds on movies. What helped me the most was to listen to the dialogs for lontime. Very often I fell sleep listening to that and I also think that help me a lot because my brain absorbed that information through that.

I found this out recently myself so I totally agree. I think it's important to have that mix of conscious and unconscious listening. So i have conversations and do watch some movies but I also listen to material when cleaning, walking etc and it means that I get familiar with a much wider range of vocabulary and expression without putting in more study time. Even if im exhausted and busy, i can then still improve. Conversational materials that you can somewhat understand are important though.

20800 min is appropriately 1 hour per day... I'm spending this time in vocabulary, Grammer rules, and reading 10 pages of a book every day. This was really helpful and completely agree. A simple mechanism (may be point 2b), to evaluate your progress would be, to keep track of the volume at which you are listening to the audio/video. Initially you would have to keep it at enough high level, say 10. At 9 you might not be able to understand the conversation to its fullest. After few days of practice try at 9. If you feel no difference, you did it. Keep on reducing it. Expert level means you are able to understand even whisper conversation !!!! Good luck...

I'm an American learning Japanese, but your advice is amazing. After I watch an episode of something, I download it as an mp3. I use Audacity to cut out the theme song, sound effects, and long silence. Recently, I downloaded a show that was 20 minutes long, but cut it down to 13 minutes! When I'm at work or driving, I listen to the audio I edited. I also try to shadow/repeat what is being said in the audio to improve my pronunciation and intonation.

It's not about the minutes spent in the learning process it's about the quality of the process itself. In watching movies, the actions and visual aids help enormously in internalizing new vocabulary and content by combining them with specific situations that are hard to forget. Of course your method is highly effective, but underestimation of movie-watching way is wrong.

Some feeling. the right substantial listening material are more important than the time spend on that. From my struggle experience, people need to listen what they totally read previously. and repeat until you totally familiar with phrase or vocab whin 3000 High Frequent things

I think that mixing both of the methods, practicing while doing something else and watching movies or whatever you put dedicated effort into, is the best way. Because yes, your method is "convenient" and makes you waste a considerably less amount of time, but you aren't really focusing your attention on that 100%. While with the "incovenient" way, you dedicate to it 100% focused on learning and don't divide your attention into learning and doing something else.

i think just listening never gonna help u to improve. what about watching Amercian drama for 3 times? at first u just watch it without any subtitles and then write down the point u didnt understand and hear on a note or sth and then watch it again with English subtitle but in this time u should watch it very carefully with keeping in mind the parts u didnt understand : if the reason y u didnt understand is that experssion is not familar with u then write down on note ,or if not, just listen carefully at this time and lastly u just watch it all the way through. after this step of watching go over the note u made and use expression in real life in right situation! it will help it to last long in ur brain. the more u watch amercian drama the more u get better i guess

Thank you. You have shared some new points I hadn't thought of. I usually suggest people to listen to real conversations, but point them to some radio talk show podcasts. I also mention that movies and tv shows aren't real conversations because they are scripted. I like your point about movies being only partially conversation, so it wastes our time. And, the idea of listening while on the train or doing other things is good too.. this is how we pick up language as babies/kids. I like the video but there are a few problems. 1) How are you "listening" if you are not paying attention? What good is spending so much time on something that you're not putting 100% of your full attention to? 2) How would you know what these basic conversations are saying? How? I could listen to ramnstein all day doesn't mean I'll learn German. It just means I'll get used to hearing it. 3) How is listening going to help you SPEAK the language? You do need somebody to break it up to you. It does require a school or a teacher.

watching, doesn't only mean movies. documentaries, news, even educational videos like this one. when we see an audiovisual media, we can read subtitles and understand what the people are talking about. but if we only listen, there's a big chance we don't even know what we're listening. Step1 - listen english conversations Step2 - Listen those while you are busy with something not in free times. Benefits - You would be saving alot of times which could be used for building vocabularies by reading english books amd articles.

I don't agree with your method number 2, but that's only me, a mere English Instructor. The way that I do is... I practice the Listening during 40 to 60 min. 3x a week. Like you I download real and natural English conversations e listen to them. The reason for this is that I believe in the concentration part and reviewing part. I select 3 or 4 conversations and listen to them two or three times. That way I can focus on the expressions, phrasal verbs and all of that. That's how I practice the concentration and reviewing part. (PS: I listen to the same conversations for a week, then I change them). For me if you practice while doing other things you don't focus and distract yourself with things around you, like a car accident, hot girls or boys depending on where you are, people fighting and so on. I'm not saying that your method doesn't work, I'm saying that I don't think number 2 is effective.

+Alexandre Banks I agree 100%. And I'm a teacher as well. He contradicted himself on that one. How are you "listening" if you are not paying attention? how is that effective? There is such a thing as subliminal learning, and the brain does get used to listening to that language, but it doesn't mean that you can rely on that method (which is lazy too). You do need some help. I do think that a school or a teacher is a must for a language.

To be honest. I like your video but I do not like your recommendation that ist the website of listening because some listening takes 16 minutes and I would rather watch cartoons instead of listening podcasts because SpongeBob episodes take just 7 minutes.

Thanks for sharing this amazing video My method that i used it to improve my English listening skill is to listening everyday(that makes sense), but not just listening, try to repeat after the speaker ( with the same accent and the same emotions like you were the speaker I mean put ur self in real situation) And + i don't recommended to watch whole movie, instead watch clips from the movie and analyze it I didn't watch the whole movie I just was watching clips without subtitle then with subtitle till i understand 100% and at the same time i put my self in the situation as the actor. I don't recommend u to watch the whole episode or movie cus it's makes u feel boring and especially if u didn't understand some scenes y'll feel discouraged bout English That's my advice for u, BTW I'm still learning/listening everyday Best wishes
