All brass players, (trombone, tuba, euphonium, trumpet, horn) need to learn how to play pedal tones. It is so important. Pedal tones, or pedal notes, require the right technique and it is important to know how to practice them. PRacticing pedal tones is what I will teach you in today's video.

Interesting. This is quite different than others out there, like James Markey or Bradley Nyström or Phil Teele. I've been doing mostly Markey/Nyström and I've now got a good pedal f. Absolutely usuable. I warm up with a modfied Vince Chicowitz Air Flow exercises, into which I built the pedal b-flat down to pedal f. Then I take out my Bordogni ofr tuba/Bass Trombone, which are already one octave lower than Rochut and play a few of them another octave lower. With time the pedal e, pedal e-flat and sometimes pedal d start "coming", not quite as full as the pedal f but ... getting better. At the moment though, that's as far as I can take it. I tried your suggestions for about 3 weeks but I'm still stuck on pedal e-flat/d. I must admit, I'm a former piccolo trumpet/baroque trumpet playing, having quit trumpet in about 1988 and having start trombone in 1991. Got my Bachelors for tenor trombone and euphonium in 1996 and immediately dropped the tenor for bass, because when I started working on bass, I found basic sound got better. At first I played a Bach 50OG for almost 20 years, and hated it. Now I'm on a Yamaha Xeno 822g dependent and love it's response and tone. On the Bach I started on a huge Slokar piece, then after a couple of years went to a Bach 1.5GM and play now since 2017 Wedges, now the 108G Gen II with the wider .300" throat (kind of similar to a Bach 1.25G). Nice Rath you have the tenor I don't play any more is a Rath R400 - decent horn that was fine for the occasional 2nd trombone gig in local orchestras.

For my Trombone usually just use my upper lip to hit the pedal tone notes on my bass trombone. I am also 14 and my band teacher said that is unusual.

Hey Zach, it's not unusual, but it's not recommended. You will hit a wall at some point. You are still young, so avoid bad habits now, so that you can grow and make unlimited progress.

The air flow is faster at low, since there is less resistance

Don’t go to low - go progressively and slow. It takes time to build. And practice every day
