@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
Hey ladies! Thanks for your question. I would do a light sand over top your color to rough up the surface. Then clean with soap and water and then rub down with alcohol. Epoxy may “slide” off super smooth surfaces, so the sanding gives it something to stick to. If you’re nervous about sanding I would at least finish with a spray of clear acrylic spray all over before applying epoxy.

Hi! Thank you for the video! Very helpful! I have a couple of questions: When salvaging ceramic mugs and SS tumblers for made sublimation (that come with a ploy-coat) is it necessary to prep this way still? Or can you epoxy right over that? Also since there are paints designed to adhere to metal, what does the sanding do if you still have to cover with paint? Isn’t the epoxy adhering to the paint, a coating, then? So using a paint for metal could eliminate sanding? Sorry if I’m being confusing- I just don’t understand how covering the metal with paint is different than applying epoxy to a coated surface. Thanks for any feedback 🙏🏾
@DIYAlex3 жыл бұрын
I would prep this way no matter what. I don’t recommend putting epoxy on ceramic mugs. The sanding is necessary to create texture of the epoxy to stick to. It doesn’t have anything to do with the paint. The paint is only necessary for color to make the glitter brighter. I hope that helps clear up your questions ☺️

What is the difference between using a flat bs a gloss/ semi gloss?
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
I like to think that the semi gloss looks more sparkly under the epoxy. I haven’t ever tested them head to head though!

Is it okay if the spray paint is speckled or does it have to be smooth?
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
As long as you're covering it with a thick coat or two of glitter, it's fine if your spray paint is speckled.

Hello. I am super brand new to tumblers. Why do you have to paint the cup? What happens if you just glitter after the 1st sanding? Thanks.
@DIYAlex5 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the tumbler world! Painting the cup is a good idea because it makes the glitter color brighter. I’ve never glittered after sanding, but I’m guessing you would be able to see the scratches if you don’t smooth them over with paint first.

Thank you. Hope I can learn fast 😁

I would plan to take your time learning ☺️ though tumblers are fun, there are LOTS of things to learn. Don’t rush it!

I bought a lilac colored matte tumbler from Walmart. The brand is Built...do I need to sand this?

Is it smooth metal or powder coated? Are you going to glitter over top of it or do you want to keep the purple color as the tumbler color?

Hi! How long to you have to wait for it to dry until you move to epoxy & glitter ?
@DIYAlex4 жыл бұрын
That varies widely, on average I would say 5-8 hours.
