I told the painter and the painter doesnt like painting over stone chips that is a good work ethic to follow your gut and not half ass any job

LOL.. Perfect timing. I just been sitting out under a tree in the back yard soft back 500 grit sanding the MPS bumper and trims, having got most of it done on the car with the random orbital before removing it. More primer this arvo. Back yard = no wet on wet with the primer sadly. Not enough guns, not enough decent continuous conditions. Still stinking hot here Gunny and now it's humid... bloody Perth weather drifting over. Anyway progress is being made :) Another good vid mate

THAANK YOU! I’ve been trying to find a video of how to prep a ORIGINAL bumper cover with oem paint. Because sometimes you find a used bumper cover but need to repaint it a different color. I couldn’t find a specific video on this, everything is usually how to prep a NEW bumper cover that is pre primed or non primed. I wasn’t sure if you could just sand the clear coat and respray over it or if you HAD to sand it all down to bare plastic. Thank you 🙏🏽

I have to paint front& rear bumpers and lower cladding on my 02 KIA Sedona, all plastic, van has very nice clean upper white paint and nasty Gold 😩 bottom! I’ve searched YT for how to paint existing plastic bumpers and 99.9% are all new bare bumpers , I’m surprised there’s not much information on refinishing existing plastic’s, especially with most cars have that now days! Hey Gunny , probably a dumb suggestion but maybe you could do a short video about the different types of primers and their main application, for example I’m doing up my sons car it’s from 1988 and has polyurethane bumpers , I’m thinking of using epoxy primer because I’ve heard fillers bond well to it as I don’t know if today’s fillers will bond to the urethane itself

Love the video! And have subscribed! I bought a painted front bumper on eBay exactly 1 year ago for my Cadillac Escalade Platinum Edition. Thought it was a good deal at the time. Th bumper came smashed in a box and I was told to pour hot water over it and get it back to its shape. Which worked....however after install I found myself touching up the paint after EVERY drive. Finally I said forget it. After 7-8 months the bumper is absolutely shot. Missing paint everywhere. I know how to begin with a “primed” bumper. However if your repainting... I assume do what you did here, and no need to prime? Since I’m removing the paint and evening with sanding?

Im about to do a bumper repair very similar to this but with spraycans. After filling a few scratches an scrufmarks with polyester filler do i need to cover these with some expensive 2k sealer or is there a cheaper way to to prepair these small areas for basecoat? I have 1k transparent plasic primer but i guess that wont work well on top of polyester filling? Could i use ordinary 1k etchprimer? Im trying to save 40 bucks on a 2k spraycan that that will barely used. Or is it a bad idea to cheap out on this?

Hi from New Zealand, we might beat you guys at cricket yet! Lol. Is there any clears which are more UV resistant we suffer from peel a lot here especially on plastic bumpers. Would just spraying a couple of extra coats help or not? Any advise welcome. Thx for taking time to make your videos as they really help.
@TheGunmanChannel5 жыл бұрын
As soon as cricket comes on I tune out lol, I used to love playing it when I was a kid but I find it a really boring spectators sport AFL is so much better 🤘😄🤘 as far as I know the more expensive clears are way more resistant to the UV rays, I'm not sure if an extra coat would help but I guess it probably would, I'd say the best way is to keep the paint well waxed, give it even a quick hand wax once a month through the summer and I reckon that'll really extend the life. I gave my car a quick wax last time I washed it and it literally took an extra 10min, after a week it's still feeling nice and slippery, it's like a layer of sunscreen for your paint. Pair that with some top of the line low VOC clear and your paint should last many years.
@nzrestoration94865 жыл бұрын
The Gunman thx for that very helpful. Now this might make me look like an idiot, but I was told to add a flex additive to plastic bumper paint base colour, now is this actually a thing because I have never heard of it, or is someone just pulling my chain!!!
@TheGunmanChannel5 жыл бұрын
They're are some people out there who think you have to use it on all plastic parts but you don't, if you did there'd be cracked paint on nearly every bumper in Australia, but there isn't. Now in saying that, there are certain types of plastic parts that do need it, but they are few and far between, manufacturers now know the types of plastic to stay away from, so it's not required on any car I've painted that was made in the last 25 years. The old Nissan NX coupes used to crack and XF falcons also needed flex additive. So simple answer is no, you don't need it, but don't forget the plastic adhesion promoter, or it will be flaking before you get to the nearest roundabout.
@MarkSmith-dz6dj5 жыл бұрын
I have just completed spraying my plastic parts on the MPS and I have never used the flexible additive ever on any of my cars and have never had an issue. As Gunny said... Plastic adhesion primer is a must. As I'm a DIY car painter I use the Septone rattle can clear adhesion primer on all bare plastic. I have even used it on cut throughs and have never had an issue with modified acrylic base coats and or 2K topcoats over it. I actually had a repair done once and I'm fairly sure they put too much flexible additive in the 2K clearcoat and I could literally scratch the bumper rubbing it with my hand. It makes 2K soft. sporn of satan as far as I'm concerned... lol
@technik3332 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your video, very helpful indeed. I found some imperfection of my plastic bumper after applying primer, is it too late to apply filler over the top? or would you require to sand it back again with 320 grit before applying the filler?

Interesting to watch! Quick question: bumper of my used car was painted(probably) and I see that paint was applied on a rectangular raised area which seems to be VIN sticker. I don't know if body shop just painted over the VIN sticker or they just covered the VIN with a special sticker of the original size as the VIN sticker. It seems to be that one lower edge can be pilled off but I don't want to risk it just yet. Do special VIN cover stickers exist that are used by body shops?
