Davie, materials prep is about the only thing you have not covered in your usual impeccable style we’ve come to rely on so deeply...though the ones you have made are tremendously appreciated more than I can convey. Bleaching and dying techniques are paramount to tying, thank you for the ones you have provided, they are excellent and needed ! L 👍🎣👍

Great timing on this one Davie. I just purchased 50 peacock feathers last week with the intent to dye at least a few of them. Thanks a bunch!

thanks again Davie for a great tutorial..in several of your videos ,you mention using woodcock and grouse as winging materials rather then hen pheasant..i'd love to see the feathers on those birds that you use.and of course any others you might use for winging in different situations thanks and have a great day Len

Great video as always Davie. I'd love to see more like this on the preparation side of things. Do you ever bleach materials before dying? Would be great to see a video on this process

I'm going to do this while my wife (Judy) is at church on Sundays!! Davie one of the steps in dying from two books I have, say to wash feathers and fur in water with a gentle solution of fish soap. After that I dump it out and rinse then do the die bath. I like your way better. Dying it red first, is that to add depth to the colour?

For the Cow Dung you mention you use bleached peacock herl. Most bleach methods on KZbin are to remove/strip the herl. Would that be something you might do a How to? Really enjoy your videos showing how to do your own materials, on top of your skills for tying flies.

Davie, I’m trying to find information on bleaching feathers. Do you have any experience in that? If so a video showing that process would be appreciated. Thanks from New England.

Hi Davie. Could you do a video on dying and bleaching deer hair please. Also after you have set the dye with the vinegar can you use what's left in the pot to dye again or is useless after that. Thanks davie

Hi Davie, I'm about to dye a hen cape, have you done any videos on cape dyeing? Many thanks for all your quality videos 👍🏻
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I'm sorry I don't have a video on dyeing a cape but if your going to have a go I would make sure the cape is washed and that it's soaked through before putting it into the dye, also make sure you get the dye well in to the cape before adding the vinegar so that you get an even colour throughout the cape...Thank you for the kind words.... All the very best Davie...

It is Lindsay although give the cape a wash first to make sure there's no grease on the feathers from the skin.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Davie great video's as always do you ever dye pheasant tails i bought some black one's recently by mail order however not good tails i would like to try and dye some myself any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@DavieMcPhail4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I dye the tails the same way as I dye the peacock herl. I buy from Veniards in bulk so that I can select the feather I feel would be ideal for dyeing. I also buy from gamekeepers too as you can get really good feathers as some of the keepers sell on ebay so look there as well..I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie

Many thanks Davie, one quick question, what quantities of dye and vinegar do you use?
@DavieMcPhail6 жыл бұрын
Hi William, Feathers on their own need very little dye but if it's a cape then you will need to add at least half a teaspoon but this can change as some dyes are more concentrated than others...It's the same with vinegar as you need more to set black than say a yellow, dyeing materials is trial and error as you learn as you go along.. All the very best Davie...

Make sure you wear gloves as you don't want to get dye on your hands as dyes are not good for you so be careful when using it...
@user-fk8rb8ue5h7 жыл бұрын
How much vinegar do you use? Is it white pickling vinegar? Many thanks.
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis Nowland, It is a white vinegar that I use and to be honest I never measure the amount I put in as I just add in what I feel is right, when I'm dyeing black I just give the dye a touch longer to take.. Lighter colours take the dye much easier so I feel it doesn't need as much vinegar though with all the experience I've had dyeing materials over the years I still get things wrong...I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Steve, I tried it once and I have to be honest I gave up as I destroyed the hair I wanted to bleach and that was many years ago so I'm sorry I would be the wrong person to ask to make a video on how to do this..My wife would kill me as well as over the years I have coloured many things with dye so bleaching materials would push her over the edge...I'm sorry I can't help you.. All the very best Davie
@handcannon13887 жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure what you're saying. Are you saying that you can't find white natural materials to dye, or that you have had no success bleaching materials of other colors white and then re-dying them? I've never bleached materials, but here are a few things to try. As for hackles, buying regular white chickens isn't too difficult. Talk to local poultry farmers or visit your county fairgrounds in late fall thru mid-winter; many such places have farm markets on weekends. Finding wet fly grade pelts is easy, dry fly grade is more difficult. A simpler route may be to find light grizzly pelts that you like, already processed, and try dying those. The barring on the hackle fibers makes flies look buggier, in my opinion, and looks good on streamer wings as well. As for deer hair, typical whitetail deer tails work well. Only the hair toward the back of the tail will come out vividly dyed, but there are uses for the darker material, as well. For spinning, get whitetail deer belly hair, as it is naturally quite white. If you would like to try dying dubbing, get some white domestic rabbit, and I would suggest getting a supply of SLF Prism dubbing, Ice Dub, or similar to mix with the dyed fur. Usually, 25% to 35% flash looks awesome, without being too gaudy. I hope this helps some. By the way, I have a cousin by the same name, but I don't believe that he ties flies. Have a great day.
