first of all you are a true artist of your craft sir, been trout fishing for just over a year and tying my own flies for a couple of months now and after tying one of these I caught my biggest trout today a rainbow of 6.25 lbs and also a smaller one of 3.5 lbs. Hi Davie, I've been watching your fly tying videos for several years now, and it occurred to me this morning (I live in Sydney Australia), that I haven't subscribed to your channel! I have subscribed now 😃 I wanted to tell you that in my humble opinion, you are possibly the best fly tier in the world today. I've been Trout/fly fishing for 30 plus years, and tying for probably 15-20 years. (I grew up in the U.K., moved to Australia 15 years ago) Your tying videos have inspired me immensely, as a result my tying has evolved enormously. You have a very relaxing tying style, which is an absolute pleasure to watch. On a side note, I would actually like to order some of your flies if possible. If so, how do I go about this. "Bibio," is a word that used to mean, "Small Insect created in wine!" That is interesting for sure and I have no idea what it means! I do know, it just means more to think about our there. I love the history of the names of flies, so I always look them up !

Hi Colin, They certainly do like black flies in Iceland as I've tyed many for friends that have fished there over the years so I would tye a few up..The black hook is becoming very popular with the competition boys so I do get asked a lot for them. I too have a few Kamasan hooks myself but I'm sure I'll use them all up as they are just as popular..I'm glad you enjoy the videos... All the very best Davie....

Hi Davie, I had a wonderful time in Iceland recently, particularly with the Arctic Char. The guide I went with on the first day knew all about you. The advice about black flies is spot on, and the locals there tend to go with weighted black nymphs as first choice, though at times dry flies do work. Next year I am going back, but in May which is apparently the best month for the trout. I wonder if your followers might find any of their local patterns interesting? The Icelandic nymph patterns that worked best for us last month were the Peacock Pupa www.flugubullan.is/verslun/peacock-pupa/ and the Watson's Fancy Pupa fos.is/2010/04/02/watsons-fancy/watsons-fancy-lokku%C3%B0-pupa/. Very bold, and the Icelanders don't seem to like hackles much! They work well there, though. Best wishes.

Beautiful, looks like a killer pattern for Clywedog. You can fit so many steps on a short shank hook without crowding the eye. I often run out of space, any tips ?

Hi Thomas, One of the main reasons for running out of space is down to the amount of materials you have used so just watch how much you are trying to tye on..Waxing your thread does help as well as it will give you more grip with less turns which can also cause you to run out of space..I'm glad you liked the fly.. Hi Joe, It is tempting to tye it the other way round as I'm sure it's worth trying but I feel the light hitting the top of the fly reflects the colour a little bit more...I'm glad you liked the pattern as it's certainly one I would recommend.. All the very best Davie

That is a really buggy looking pattern. Is it also a good stillwater pattern for you? You talk about the durability of the body, but how long do the legs hold up before breaking off? I realize that trout fisherman are often quite happy to catch a handful of fish on a fly before retiring it, but since I fish primarily panfish, I am disappointed if I catch less than several dozen on a single fly. Keep up the great work. I believe that you are the single most talented practical tyer (flies to be fished) I have seen, and certainly the most pleasant to converse with. Have a great day. Hi Ken, I would like to think that it would catch a good dozen or more fish before it starts to show signs of wear, the legs do last just as long..Unfortunately we don't have panfish here in the UK though they sound like a good fish to catch..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words... Not to detract from Davie, but I live in Kansas and do fish a lot of sunfish and panfish. Most of the tying I do is directly from Davie's videos because let's face it; this man is a genius and horse when it comes to tying flies. On delicate patterns that use pheasant tail / peacock herl I do substitute items in to replace them. I use small centipede rubber or and old bass spinner skirt for the legs and tie gentle knots in them to get the bend and shape. Peacock herl I use a SLF Prism dubbing in peacock color that holds good. I put a similar pattern like this to the test 4 days ago and got into about 40 hefty bluegills. They held up pretty well. I had to add floatant to the elk / deer hair to keep it going, but other than that it was great. It is not as cracking as what Davie just tied, but it will catch some gills.

That's essentially what I do, too. I don't tie or fish poppers for panfish; though I will use a foam spider occasionally. They were among my first flies, and if tied correctly will last through literally hundreds of fish. Mostly, I use wet flies that would work as well for trout. I also limit my use of pheasant tail mostly to wing cases and such; even then I often coat them with UV resin for extra durability. If you want, you can check out my channel - so far all the videos concern fly fishing for panfish (one is on filleting the catch). Best wishes for continued success on those big 'gills, just remember to save a few for seed. Ken Watson
